The problem is an enormous number of very poor students attending schools in very challenged city neighborhoods. Suburban schools that surround the RCSD have done very well in common core testing. One of the solutions that has been put forth is to integrate all Monroe county schools into one schools district. The problem with that is that the RCSD has to find a way to be able to teach the children they have now to make them proficient with the grade levels they are now in. This debate has been going on for a decade a more. There is no solution that any one can see on the horizon. It is a very sad situation for these students in the RCSD that are not being taught what they need to know to get ahead in the world today.
I am not an educator but I imagine a lot of those kids not performing at grade level would catch up quickly in a good environment. It’s sad. In many cities as the working and lower middle classes were hollowed out when industry left, the school system follows suit. Rochester is like many mid size rust belt towns. Working poor. Families hit up the food pantry before going to work. It is common.
Interesting that you bring this up TLD. Rochester does have the Urban/Suburban program. This allows a number of students in the RCSD to transfer to suburban schools to further their education. The downside to this is that some folks in the RCSD claim this takes more students that want to learn away from the core population of students in RCSD as a whole. The net result being that a greater number of students that either don't want to learn or have issues with learning are left in schools that are already struggling. The solution asked for by the leadership of the RCSD is they need more money to improve the schools they serve.

The RCSD has just spent an enormous amount of money to improve the schools in the city. This includes modernization to every school building in the city. Will this work... nobody knows. There was a comment in our local paper from a teacher a few months ago that gives a clue to what one of the unspoken problems is. On a recent parent/teacher night only one parent took enough interest in their child to show up to see how the child was doing. How very sad is that?
https://www.rcsdk12.org/page/713 When it is all done this updating of the RCSD will cost well over a billion dollars. Will it actually result in better learning... nobody knows right now.
It is a very complicated problem with a complicated history. A good friend’s wife is CEO for one of the largest Charter School companies on the east coast. We debate this topic often. Have a Happy Thanksgivings and enjoy the time with your family.

Curtains for the Clintons

by liberal Maureen Dowd
Their pathological need to be relevant in America is belied by a Canadian arena, where stretches of empty seats bear witness to the passing of their relevance.

It’s a pity.

Good riddance. Bill Clinton had his turn and Hillary capitalized on it. These people can charge whatever they want for tickets and people can choose not to go. Hopefully Hillary gets the message.

There had been some discussion on another forum about wealthy Republicans financing blue dog Democrats in their campaigns for office. I regret having ignored the exchange and now wonder whether there had been some truth to it. Blue dog DINOs were a thorn on Obama's side and he did well to get rid of them. But what happens if they make a comeback and again stifle the Dem's agenda?

Dunno if there is any truth to this by Dowd - had she looked at the Clinton tour of Toronto, she would learn they were well received:

and they were well received in Montreal as well:

Investigations Won’t Defeat Trumpism. Strengthening Democracy Will.

"House Democrats should focus on defending voting rights and majority rule, not issuing subpoenas to the White House."

Although as some Dems have said, they DO have a duty to investigate improprieties and they hopefully CAN walk and chew gum at the same time. Jerry Nadler, Elijah Cummings and Adam Schiff are sharp folks...here's hoping they don't over-reach, as their GOP colleagues are wont to do...

This shtick is getting really old. Just one more myth. How old is The Donald again?? John Kasick is 66, Mitt Romney is 71. Reagan was 73 when he was elected and he served 2 terms and napped a lot. McConnell is 76 and Grassley is 85. Pelosi has got more energy than the bunch of them put together. But it is only the democrats who have old people in positions of power. Right ....

You forget to point out that John Kennedy, by todays standards would have been a far right conservative. The up and comers in the Democrat party are not even last decades Democrats. They are a new breed... they are hard core dyed in the wool, the government will solve all your problems socialists. Given the absolute ineptitude of the republican party to lead anything, the next interesting question has to come in to play. Will the old guard of the FLP wing of the Democrat party pass the baton onto the next generation. The next question IMO is America ready for what the next generation of the Democrat party wants to do to America? The only saving grace for Republicans could be the bloodletting of the old guard Democrats and the new guard Democrats. No matter how you slice it the Democrats only hover around 40% in popularity in the country. That is about the same for the Republicans.

The battle will be fought for that elusive 20% that will decide every election. The new guard could be what puts Democrats over the top... or they could be the anchor that drags them down. My instincts tell me right now that the new guard is about 5 to 10 years out from making a real difference. It does tell you, given the ineptitude of the Republican party, that they can't offer any alternative that will inspire their base. What the Republicans need is a Trump like personality that does not have the temperament of Trump. I don't see anybody like that on the horizon for the Republican party. What Republicans like to do best is whine and complain about what the other side is doing. When given the opportunity... they fall on their face every time. Neither side has a vision... outside of the new guard Democrats. If the new guard inspires anyone outside of college graduates and the old hippies I am not seeing their vision. It is easy to promise free stuff for everybody. I don't think the new guard understands yet how do you pay for it. Like all politicians with big ideas and big hearts... you make it up as you go along. :D

Why should we be afraid of a socialist economy?

Because Americans want to walk their dogs... not eat them. headbang1

Nope, John Kennedy would find himself pretty comfortable with the Never Trumpers of the GOP, but would be horrified, rightly so, by the far right. He'd recognize it, though, as springing from the roots of the racist south. He'd also find himself pretty comfortable with many of the Dem Congress folks with military backgrounds.
