Great weekend for the Jays.

Along with the long-awaited win over Ohio State, teams that won this weekend include Syracuse, GT, Delaware, Utah, Jacksonville, and St. Joe’s.

It’s time to beat the Terps.

Collison now has 20 goals and 7 assists.

He has a shot at matching Joel Tinney’s 28 goal, 10 assist freshman season productivity.

Great day at Homewood, rain delay notwithstanding. Attendance: 4,500. Saw lots of big-time alums — recent guys (Stanwicks, Tinney, etc) and old timers alike. Zim showed up at the tailgate and the Cordish deck was packed. The vibes in and around the program are as good as they’ve been in many, many years.

Pretty sure Crawley’s dad was running around in an Easter bunny costume. It was that kind of day for the home team.

As for the game, it was the result of two teams moving in polar opposite direction as programs. Like two trains passing in the night. I kinda feel bad for the players and families on that OSU team. I overheard a dad say he wished the season would just be over. Feels like that team has just about given up.

Offense looked great today. They are so unselfish. Nobody cares who scores as long as they score. Collison, Melendez, Degnon, McDermott, Angelus, Grimes all played well with contributions from several others.

Carson Brown is going to be a star. Running out of things to say at this point. Between him and Collison we’ve got two absolute studs locked in at each end of the field for the next three years.

Obviously, a great bounce back game for the faceoff crew. Based on PM’s postgame comments it sounds like Narewski’s pitch count has increased since he first came back. Dunn great at home once again. Next week will be VERY different going up against Wierman.

Nice to see a bunch of depth guys get into the game in the 4th. Handsor had a nice moment where he turned away a dodge and the bench erupted.

Nothing is guaranteed but at 10-4, #4 in the RPI, and 6 top 20 wins I think the Jays can feel pretty good about going dancing in May. The tee times can wait.

Maryland first.

They just opened a $24 million facility, are the alpha athletic dogs in the alpha athletic conference in America, have new tv $ coming in, a conference set to have reach in all 3 major us tv markets, and the Schottenstein family among others adding $. Ohio state will be just fine.

One of the reasons this team is where it is today has been "high lacrosse iq", although the offense and that man down goal sometimes lead me to question that. There was a play towards the end of the second period where a hopkins shot was headed out of bounds with evans and an ohio state longpole giving chase. The ohio state player had a few steps on evans who realized it but then took angles in the race and won the closest to the endline preserving the possession. Earlier in the period narewski was headed for a faceoff win but sensed the ohio state offensive player was about to step over the line and drew him into the error. Smart heady heady stuff that will likely make some film sessions around the nation and perhaps canada this week.

On the broadcast they listed the lax alumni in attendance, something Duke hoops has provided media who attend games there for years. Glad they are reading the forum and taking our suggestions.

Sorry but that was a slow offensive start. Ohio State has been terrible on the road and they were apparently missing their top faceoff man.

Hawley and kaufman got on the board today for the first time. I'm not sure what the record number of kids to score goals is for the program but this group might be in the conversation. especially impressive because we haven't had an manhattans or umbcs to fatten up the tallies and empty the bench.

If you didn't see the piece they did on Melendez and his uncle it's worth rewatching. Very nice stuff from Dixon and it underscores that for all the growth of the game stuff the advantage that programs in maryland and new york have in the wealth of local talent who want to play near home.

Hmmm - thought face-offs was perhaps the most overrated statistic - could of sworn I read that somewhere. Look they are still clearly managing his pitch count - went from 15 to 19 face-offs taken from last week to this week. Maybe they did wait too long last week but they were up 5-0 and the staff had other issues to account for like why were Penn State players suddenly all alone with time and room. And Hopkins still lost 8 of the 15 face-offs that Narewski took - it wasn't a good night.

Perhaps the most annying and distressing thing about this team is the momentary lapses. Even more embarrassing IMO then the poor pass on the EMO from the offense was Mazzone and Smith looking worse than a house league defense letting someone - while an AA caliber player - who is not exactly fleet of foot just walk in on your goalie when you have an extra player. Make OSU burn the shot clock - you still have about 30 seconds of EMO. Then there was the pass from Jaronksi to Degnon after creating a turnover yourself. Still they only had 9 turnovers through 3 quarters which is not horrible.

11 assists and some pretty offensive play were highlights - 1 goal after halftime from OSU another positive. If Evans nets a couple and Bauer gets one more you would have 8 players with 10 or more goals and 3 more by Grimes gets you four with 20 or more. The last team to get 8 players with 10 or more was 2018 - the last time Hopkins had double digit wins and a very competitive quarter final appearance against the eventual national champions

'06 - Your first 3 "checks" are indisputable - I can't craft a scenario where somebody amongst Michigan Rutgers Penn State doesn't end up with 3 losses but the shame of the lapses against Penn State is that you could have locked down a bye as of now and a Rutgers win tonight would have given you the number 1 seed. An at-large bid seems fairly safe but nothing is done until that selection show - and a seed is not locked down by any stretch - lose to Maryland and you are probably playing on April 29 - if you are the 4th seed in the BIG you are probably looking at Michigan or Rutgers coming to Baltimore - not a done deal. You would be giving the Committee a resume of 10-6 and a loss in the first round of your tournament.

First things first - Maryland embarrased you on your home field last year. They scored 10 times in the third quarter and were up by 18. If that fire doesn't burn - then it never will. They should have smoke coming out of their eyes already.

Doc, this sounds like many of the posts from the Cornell threads back around 2018/2019 when we had Mr. Milliman as our coach. I remember when Cornell hired Pete, and their was much reservation here, but we soon learned that he is a great coach, a great motivator of student athletes, and a stand up guy. You may not always agree with everything he does but that guy can flat out coach.
Good luck to coach Milliman and the Jay's the rest of the season.

You keep saying this. Is it even true? I swear some of you just repeat the same things over and over and never adjust when presented with new information. I’m not sure you know what good offense looks like.

Since the shorthanded debacle at Loyola in February, the Jays have scored at least 11 goals in 10 straight games and 15+ in 3/4 Big Ten games. They’re averaging close to 14 goals per game since the calendar flipped to March.

They were #11 in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency prior to yesterday’s game (that’s even slightly better than the defense) and I imagine they’ll be inside the top 10 after the performance vs. OSU in which they scored 17 through 3 quarters and then emptied the bench.

It is true the offense had growing pains early on, some of which were related to injuries. And they are still prone to a mind-numbingly bad pass on occasion. But the actual facts suggest the opposite of your assertion which feels like it’s stuck in 2022.

At this point the need to be negative and still find stuff to criticize after a great day for the team is utterly pathological. I pity that way of seeing the world. Seems like it’d be miserable.

This Jays offense is so good, it does not need to get cute as on the 2 minute EMO which resulted in an early turnover. Maybe, they were trying to impress the hidden ball master, Tinney.

At times, Hop was abusing Buckeye shorties at will.

Pick your poison, Collison, Melendez, Angelus, Grimes, McDermott, Degnon, Bauer, et al. Not enough poles for all scorers.

Hopkins is getting in and they’re getting a seed too. Both are locks at this point. They have 1 Top 10 RPI win over Georgetown and 5 additional Top 20 wins, plus their RPI is 4th. Even if they lost to Maryland next week and in a B1G Quarterfinal, their RPI would still be in the Top 8 and there’s no one on the bubble who is capable of making a run at putting together a resume like the one they have, aside from a B1G team and Hopkins already beat the 3 B1G teams below them (Rutgers, Michigan, OSU.) They might fall to 7 or so as opposed to 4-5, but they’re getting a seed.

I'm actually going to side with 06 on this one at least in terms of what it takes to make the next step up and to become a "great" team. Not to disparage the results of this season overall and this team is fun to watch and getting the job done but they aren't always getting it done particularly pretty and it's hard to look at some of the number metrics alongside how the games actually play out and just completely pull the rug over them.

The offense is getting the job done in general and they put up a bunch yesterday BUT there was still plenty of signs of it happening "ugly" in many cases or a fortuitous bounce at times. Ball trickles in from an outside shot after the goalie basically stopped it, Melendez behind the back with no time left on the shot clock. Players are making plays for sure but sometimes the ball bounces your way on things like these and it won't always.

If we look back 1 week ago to the PSU game what happened aside from losing a bunch of faceoffs to cause that one to slip away? On the offensive end of the field there have been plenty of stretches where things just go cold for an entire quarter or more and even when things are working I still sometimes feel like I witness somewhat ill advised or low percentage things kinda just working out in the Jays favor at times. When Melendez went off in the 1st quarter were all of those shots from range that went in really unsaveable or of the caliber that you as a defense aren't more generally ok with allowing the opponent to get off?

Yesterday while the benches were emptied in the 4th there were still some possessions with the top of the depth chart out there in the earlier stages of the 4th and while you are of course somewhat sitting on the ball and being deliberate the Jays still posted up a 0 for that quarter.

Things will still need to be better on that end most likely if you want to go deep in May and actually beat teams ranked 1-5.

Why is the reaction immediately after an impressive Homecoming win that likely locked the Jays into their first NCAA tournament berth in four years to nitpick why they aren't "great"? It's just a little tiresome. Enjoy the win for 24 hours before we wonder what it's going to take to beat a team like Notre Dame in the tournament. (I also think you're giving 06 too much credit re: his comment.)

"Aside from losing a bunch of faceoffs" is doing a lot of work there — obviously the possession disadvantage was a real factor in the PSU game. We were actually the more efficient offense than Penn State that night on a per-possession basis. We had a couple of nice offensive sets that led to good chances in the 4th and in overtime but their goalie made some huge saves.

If the offense keeps getting it done ugly and the ball seems to bounce their way more often than not, maybe they're just good? I think maybe because we have 4-5 "very good" players on offense and nobody in the truly elite/1st team AA/Tewaaraton category that maybe it creates a feeling that the offense is just scraping by or getting lucky or something but that's where the metrics come in for me. Adjusted efficiency is the great equalizer. Goals per possession, factoring in how good the defense you're facing is. What else do you really need to know?

We're not the only team who has had a cold stretch here or there. Duke went ice cold in the 4th yesterday and let UVA back in it. Maryland was cold for basically the entire first half vs. OSU last week. If the argument is "our offense is not as good as UVA's yet" then yes, you'd be correct. I just don't get why that even needs to be said.

Face-offs aren't as important as some other things, but this isn't a team that can overcome taking a beating at the X.
I'm just glad they moved Narewski from closer to starter status.
Jays certainly hit on all cylinders in the third quarter against OSU.
If they can hold their own at the X this Saturday, this Jays team certainly has a chance to to pull off the upset in College Park.

Thanks, Joew78. Not sure I’m completely sold on PM, but he is making a good case for his coaching skills. Winning will do that.
