I have been watching a lot of old re runs of Adam 12 on the tube lately. They carry 3 things on their pistol belts... handgun, nightstick and handcuffs. Today standard issue equipment is ... body camera, radio handset, stun gun, kevlar vest, handgun, extra ammo pouches, handcuffs and maybe even a swiss army knife for good measure. How can you ever chase a bad guy down the street when you are basically a walking Christmas tree full of ornaments?

John Lewis Lived, and We Are All Better Off For It

Representative John Lewis, a son of sharecroppers and an apostle of nonviolence who was bloodied at Selma and across the Jim Crow South in the historic struggle for racial equality, and who then carried a mantle of moral authority into Congress, died on Friday. He was 80.
... On the front lines of the bloody campaign to end Jim Crow laws, with blows to his body and a fractured skull to prove it, Mr. Lewis was a valiant stalwart of the civil rights movement and the last surviving speaker from the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963.
More than a half-century later, after the killing in May of George Floyd, a Black man in police custody in Minneapolis, Mr. Lewis welcomed the resulting global demonstrations against police killings of Black people and, more broadly, against systemic racism in many corners of society. He saw those protests as a continuation of his life’s work, though his illness had left him to watch from the sidelines.
... Mr. Lewis’s personal history paralleled that of the civil rights movement. He was among the original 13 Freedom Riders, the Black and white activists who challenged segregated interstate travel in the South in 1961. He was a founder and early leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, which coordinated lunch-counter sit-ins. He helped organize the March on Washington, where Dr. King was the main speaker, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
Mr. Lewis led demonstrations against racially segregated restrooms, hotels, restaurants, public parks and swimming pools, and he rose up against other indignities of second-class citizenship. At nearly every turn he was beaten, spat upon or burned with cigarettes. He was tormented by white mobs and absorbed body blows from law enforcement.
On March 7, 1965, he led one of the most famous marches in American history. In the vanguard of 600 people demanding the voting rights they had been denied, Mr. Lewis marched partway across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., into a waiting phalanx of state troopers in riot gear.
Ordered to disperse, the protesters silently stood their ground. The troopers responded with tear gas and bullwhips and rubber tubing wrapped in barbed wire. In the melee, which came to be known as Bloody Sunday, a trooper cracked Mr. Lewis’s skull with a billy club, knocking him to the ground, then hit him again when he tried to get up.
... History remembers the March on Washington for Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, but Mr. Lewis startled and energized the crowd with his own passion.
“By the force of our demands, our determination and our numbers,” he told the cheering throng that August day, “we shall splinter the segregated South into a thousand pieces and put them together in the image of God and democracy. We must say: ‘Wake up, America. Wake up!’ For we cannot stop, and we will not and cannot be patient.”
C.T. Vivian was also a major force in the civil rights movement. He worked alongside King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in the struggle for racial equality.
And like Lewis, he was also part of the Freedom Riders -- civil rights activists who rode through southern states to make sure bus terminals and other public facilities were not segregated.
His civil rights actions started decades ago with his first nonviolent protest in 1947 -- a lunch counter sit-in in Peoria, Illinois.
Vivian had a strong religious upbringing and he and other ministers founded the Nashville Christian Leadership Conference, an affiliate of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The group helped organize sit-ins and civil rights marches.
... In the late 1970s, Vivian founded an anti-racism organization that focused on monitoring the Ku Klux Klan.
Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.
As we have seen on our own little forum, the work of Rep. John Lewis and Rev. Vivian is still not done.

Good start to pushing back on DHS' naked fascism. Wolf needs to be held accountable for this. Nothing in his CV indicates he is anything other than an organization man, a go along to get along type. The kind that makes a good little fascist. Same for the foot soldiers just following orders.

Trump Trying to Develop His Own Gestapo

Completely agree.
Those who have studied the history of the Gestapo know that the Gestapo did not fully become the horror that we all remember overnight. It took several years before the Gestapo fully consolidated and nationalized German police forces and was shielded from any judicial review.
We know that Trump admires murderous dictators like Vladimir Putin. We know that many of his supporters, including some members of this forum, also admire authoritarian thugs like Putin.
What we are seeing in Portland, and what we saw in Lafayette Park a month ago, are just test runs for establishing a Gestapo-like national force loyal to Donald Trump. It’s not an accident that this unmarked federal force is comprised of Customs and Border Protection agents ... who have developed a particular devotion to Trump and his racist policies.
Not all CBP officials and agents support Trump’s fascist policies. Most almost certainly do not. As jhu72 states, it’s time for them to stand up and oppose the transformation of the CBP into Trump’s own Gestapo.
