I did read his.....and I read the posts under his. The entire point, why is this book even considered to be added to the summer reading list?
It was not assigned to middle schoolers, nor made available to them through the school; the list was sent to parents, with a warning that there was adult material on it. The book was listed on a document of award-winning books.

why would an award-winning book be on a summer reading list? I'm sure the same question was asked when we were growing up about Fahrenheit 451, The Invisible Man, 1984, Animal Farm, anything about the Holocaust, Anne Frank's Diary of a Young Girl, Uris, Potok?...etc...can you think of any others that made some people super uncomfortable or downright mad? Ok, let's get to sex, Lady Chatterley's Lover? The Canterbury Tales? Joyce's Ulysses?

Still get banned by the troglodytes.

Gender Queer may well be something a particular parent would like to read, have their son or daughter read, as they consider the social issues of our times, the experiences children are going through. What do I read, suggest my child read, if my child is going through these questions of themselves? Not just any book, but here's an award-winning one. And it's pretty darn obvious what it's going to be about.

That is why.

You can watch the entire meeting. You'll also learn that this book was not assigned, and isn't even available to their middle school students. It was on a list of books that got an award which was attached to a summer reading list. AND THE TEACHER EVEN WARNED THERE WAS ADULT MATERIAL ON THE LIST.The school has also started it's review process for book's availability in the high school.

It's apparent a lot of people don't actually care about truth enough to gather the full context. 6:25 is a good place to start the video if you have a low level of investment or attention span. Bolding is mine:

There was a communication to some parents in our middle school that recommended and encouraged our students read over the summer, thanked the parents for the year and linked to our middle school reading list. Also attached a document with a couple of award winning lists, one being the Lincoln Award list. On that list was a book that has drawn a lot of attention. The teacher did point out that parents should look there is additional adult content and they should take that into consideration.

To be clear, if you go online our middle school website this book is not on our middle school reading list. It is also not a title that is in our middle school. It's an unfortunate situation that occurred and obviously we've done the best to rectify that with communication to the parents that received that.
The only communication about the book was to parents, not kids. And they were warned the list has adult content. And they were followed up with. This isn't people grooming 6th graders, this is grown ass parents that don't like that a list exists referencing books completely outside of their middle school that they don't like.
  Glad to see you believe everything 'on the internet' and even cite the poster from reddit. Did you bother to click the youtube link   ....clearly not, b/c the link does not work. You are just regurgitating something from a poster on reddit.

Sure....hand your 11 year your old that summer reading list, about sucking dikc's with pictures...just splendid. Nice to see you'll tolerate damned near anything, and you then wonder why our education system is failing.
The list was sent to parents, right? Parents could pre-view the list and determine which, if any, of the books were relevant and appropriate to their children? Parents had complete and total veto power over the books listed, if they wanted to engage.

You seem to be on board for a RW manufactured problem, kind of like the debt ceiling "crisis" created by McCarthy and the Idiots after giving Trump four clean bills. You seem to be so deep in the algorithmic politics of your "news" feed that you've lost the ability to reason about things.

You think the reason that our education system is failing is that kids are using a suggested summer reading list?

There's whole MESS of stuff in the Bible that I think teaches kids horrible things, and does irreparable damage to them. Yet I wouldn't lose a wink of sleep if my daughter wanted to read it in 7th grade. She's reading? She has a curious mind? AWESOME. I've done part of my job as a parent.

We've been over this before. None of this stuff is available in (insert conservative county). Nothing remotely liberal.

And yet their scores are WORSE than they are more liberal cities.

This is a shiny object keeping your team from fixing our educational system. And it's working BRILLIANTLY. This is why DeSantis does it....it works.

DeSantis knows this nonsense exists on the internet----fake, distorted stories designed to get people to click. So he reinforces to voters that this stuff exists, and he's going to pass fake laws that "fix" these fake problems.

Remember when Petey came on to claim they were "forcing 6 year olds to watch porn"....and that DeSantis was here to save us from that?

That. You're being played.

Nope, do it though the reddit. My copy and paste didn't link, but he tells you where to start. 6:25.

You have a problem with that book, don't give it to your middle schooler...the school doesn't. But if you have a kid struggling with these issues, make the call as to whether they are going to be scarred for life because they see a picture of such act, (which happens to be quite common heterosexually as well)...in the context of reading about these emotional struggles in an award winning book. You think your middle schooler hasn't found pornhub etc? Wake up.

11 year old? your call, parent.

You want to know why "our education system is failing"???
Because we don't value teachers and education enough to pay for more teachers, more teacher education, music and other arts, books...ever been to schools where the teachers pay for school supplies for the kids out of their own pockets?

On the other hand, pretty sure my elementary, middle, and upper schools continue to provide a super education...of course it costs parents (paying full rate) double what the highest cost per student public schools spend, and that's only a fraction of what those schools actually spend per student with the support of alumni giving...

But, hey, let's blame issues on too much, too many "woke" reading opportunities over the summer.

Nonsense. There are Republican controlled School Districts and States all over our nation where Unions have zippo power.

And as you very well know, their scores SUCK, regardless of metric.

That tells you: that ain't the problem.

Our teachers here? They can't even expel a kid for carrying a gun and feeling threatened in their own classrooms.

I'm reducing it to red/blue because this idiotic "the gays are coming for your children" is 100% fabricated by your team. I'm not the guy who came up with this stupidity....that's your party.

And it's being used by clowns like DeSantis.....because it works on gullible R voters who don't stand up to him and tell him "yeah, that's not the problem in our schools".

It's the 21st Republican formula: because they haven't the foggiest idea how to solve real problems, they instead fabricate a fake problem on the internet, and then R politicians pretend to fix said fake problem. And most importantly, R voters never bother to check to see if A. it's a real problem and B. if they actually fixed the problem. (the answer is always no and no) Rinse. Repeat.

See: Trump's wall. Or "Standing up to China". Or "the gays are ruining US education".

what the heck are you talking about?
School boards have the power. Red or blue. Not unions.
They get to advocate for more pay and benefits and tenure but that's about it. Advocate.
Texas book review has the power in textbooks.

But public education gets way less funding in red states, teachers are paid way less.
Fewer teachers. Fewer textbooks.

Especially bad in the not white areas of those states. Local taxes...

You think the AFT and NEA don't care about those teachers???
They're simply want to teach about gender???

Such BS.

Try reading the jeffrodit response on the reddit feed. Come back after reading.

AND THE TEACHER EVEN WARNED THERE WAS ADULT MATERIAL ON THE LIST.The school has also started it's review process for book's availability in the high school.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI9A4bD9kSw

The link does not work in reddit is the entire point....which means you also did not watch the youtube video.
I just did. Do you not see the video at the start of the reddit...the one posted by the right wing "conservative" professor?
Thats just a a ~1 minute clip, not the youtube video...so NO, we cant see the entire youtube video. .
You're right. The video of the full meeting back in July 2022 was taken down, apparently. I did find a 10 minute mash-up on a right wing blogger site, but it cut out the explanation/refutation of the false claims that were being made.

How is this for more credibility: https://myemail.constantcontact.com/A-m ... uluQy9WlK0

I will never forget my best friend and I sneaking into a college party and daring each other to try to pick up a college girl!! He had on a leather jacket with the collar turned up, sunglasses and his “go to device” to look “older”….a toothpick in his mouth!!

And for YA….It was my buddy that lived in Clinton, Md. I talk to him everyday.

Colorado Parents Shouldn’t Allow Their Kids within Miles of These Teachers

By GEORGE LEEF, May 8, 2023

The utter dedication of the country’s teachers’ unions to a radical transformation of the U.S. has long been evident, but if you need a refresher, consider the resolution recently adopted in Colorado, declaring that capitalism “exploits” people and harms education. Not a single one of the resolution’s supporters knows Thing One about capitalism, but that doesn’t matter in the least.

Pushing back against this lunacy is Hans Bader in this Liberty Unyielding article.

Bader writes, “The teachers union claim that capitalism harms schools is contradicted by the fact that capitalist countries tend to be better at teaching students useful skills than Marxist countries. Communist regimes may be able to teach basic literacy, but they are very bad at teaching students to think creatively or do complex or mentally demanding tasks. Eastern European countries have lower IQs than Western European countries, directly proportional to the stultifying nature of their school systems. Albania, which suffered under the worst communist regime in Europe (which outlawed religion and killed most of its clergy), has the lowest average IQ in Europe, while Romania, which had the second most oppressive regime in Europe, has the second-lowest average IQ in Europe.”

Then there is the little matter of peace and prosperity. Capitalism is conducive to both, which is good for children and other living things, whereas collectivism leads to bloody conflicts and stifles innovation.

Bader also observes, “The resolution’s hostility to capitalism is in accord with critical race theory (CRT), which is popular in education schools. The most-cited author in education schools is Gloria Ladson-Billings, a critical race theorist who ‘introduced critical race theory into the academic field of education in 1995.’ She is the author of ‘Critical Race Theory in Education: A Scholar’s Journey,’ and ‘Toward a Critical Race Theory of Education.’ She has been cited in articles by education scholars more than 80,000 times.”

Few if any of those “education scholars” is a true, objective intellectual, and the citations are found in what professor Stan Ridgley calls “cargo cult journals” in his book Brutal Minds.

But there could be a silver lining in this silly resolution. It might cause Colorado parents to walk away from the state’s public schools at an accelerating rate. It ought to.

Gosh that was a deep, steaming pile of horse pucky.

The reading level of the average american is middle school. Nonsensical that those same people should have power over educational materials. The US continues to lose standing on a global basis. No real surprise red states are net users of fed tax dollars and canno support themselves or that their states have the worst educational systems

Exactly; +1

Florida has one of the worst educational systems, paying teachers near the bottom of any state, is focused on CRT and DEI and book bans...and just passed a direct transfer of $8500 a year to ANY parent who chooses to send their kid to a private school...including all those who already do, no means test, rich folks get the money too...

But hey, the AFT and NEA have the power... total "horse pucky"!
