Reports on former Blue Jays around the league:

Concannon just scored a goal to likely seal a win for Hofstra over Stony Brook.

Congrats to Grimes on goal #1 and Milliman on win #1.
I mean no slight to Michigan, but I think it’s hard to measure how good our good ratings actually were.

I reserve judgment until next week. But very happy we won.

Watching RU do a Ron Popeil on OSU, I fear we will have beat PSU to get to 2/5 :o

Yeah, not making any grand conclusions about this one, but you can only play the opponent in front of you, and in most areas the team was improved from last week. All you can ask for at this point.

Just looked at the box score. Some additional stats and observations that stood out:

- 6-0 third quarter. In both games the Jays have come out of the half looking better
- 20-23 on clears isn't terrible but it certainly felt worse than that
- Narewski was 10/19 but as a team we lost the FO battle 12-11
- 4-4 on EMO
- DeSo is the primary X attackman now. Joey mostly played on the wing. They both had 6 pts.
- Reinson: 4 GB, 2 CT. Szuluk: 2 GB, 2 CT. Deans: 3 GB. Delaney: 6 GB, 2 CT. Much better day off the ground for the poles
- We held their best player (Zawada) to 0 goals and 2 assists. It was a collective effort but Szuluk had a lot of time covering him. Man, Szuluk looked real comfortable.

Wow every time I looked I thought it was Lyne covering Zawada. I didn’t realize it was primarily Szuluk. I agree he looked comfortable. Epstein on the wing answered my concerns about Deso and their coexistence. Epstein is pretty much automatic from that spot.

Defense looked so much better today. Quick, aggressive slides to help the SSDMs. Longsticks pressed out at times and put pressure on the Michigan attackmen. Seven or eight caused turnovers. Clears were more of an adventure than they should have been, but hopefully that will improve.

Beginning to see signs of that motion offense we were promised. Great off-ball work by the Blue Jays offense today.

Epstein with 6 goals and DeSimone with 2 goals and 4 assists.

NaWERSKY did a good job today, but the staff really need to get Prouty going ... need two solid faceoff men under these new rules.

Solid win over a spirited Michigan team. Encouraged to see Hopkins improve so much in a week.

On to Maryland. It’s a big ask to have Hopkins beat the Terps next week, but this Blue Jay squad should be able to keep the game competitive.

Well - a win is a win is a win as they say and Hopkins had to have it but Michigan certainly has some issues at this point in the season. The Wolverines man down defense reminded me of a day at Homewood when I watched Carolina score like 7 EMO goals and all of them seemed to take like 10-20 seconds. I think you certainly take a glimmer of hope in the nice ability of some of Hopkins players to find the easy goal on the back side but you still take away many things to work on - 33 shots in the shot clock era? Rutgers had 33 on goal today. 15 turnovers? And while up in ground balls through 3 quarters - Hopkins only came away with 28 total - 22 minus Narewski - and 9 from starters and 5 from starters minus 1 player (Reinson). If you want to play with Maryland/Rutgers/Penn State you need more opportunities. Maryland is not likely to throw it away almost 20 times and if they have many more extra bites at the apple you are going to lose.

Some Questions
Still no Glassmeyer right?
I used to give it to Petro on this issue - and maybe Milliman has some excuse because of the lack of practice but you're up by 8 with 5 minutes to go and 26 is all you can see to find the field?

It's easy to see how Hopkins stays in the game next week-end - Maryland has uncharacteristically struggled so far at face-offs but their defense has been unfortunately very characteristically stingy - opponents have turned the ball over 21 times a game, they have caused 11 turnovers a game and Michigan and Penn State have shot 23% on 34 shots a game- if you only shoot 34 time you have to shoot close to 40% to get to 13. So the Jays have to win more initial possessions and handle the Terrapin pressure and get shots - otherwise warm up the buses early

-production quality was not great. Michigan athletics is loaded in cash and this has lower production quality than a lot of hs matches.
-first nonstart for zinn since freshman year. He gets by his man pretty easily, help comes and he's lost, shoots errantly or there's a turnover and then he disapears for the rest of the possession.
-nice for keough to get the start. he's given us a lot. He, angelus, baskin, degnon are almost consistently 1 goal a game guys. college crosse didn't seem impressed w/uvas midfield depth. I'm curious if zinn can't on track if they think mcdermott or anyone else can bring heat.
-williams is a big fella who is not consistently a big enough part of the picture. someone that experienced that big as well and he doesn't seem to like to be physical and to get after it inside.
-tillman and tambroni are not going to let epstein get lose for 6 or will try not to. grimes and williams need to get going.
-my nightmare for this season involved a lot of transition goals given up on defense. they've done a nice job there.
-despite the defensive issues we're ahead of the caused turnover pace of the last few years. that's been a big concern for several of you for forever.
-reinson isn't kuhn, but he can shoot. loved that.
-offensive penalties were an issue a few years ago. not an issue so far, we'll see how friendly things get as the season gets deeper.
-defense to start game was better. mabbett deserves more help
-the turnovers on offense to start the game aren't on the staff. these offensive guys have played together for several years in some cases now.
-the offensive issues in the crease feel like one of the fall ball no practice casualties
-ryan brown and several others probably saw some of that epstein shooting and said I remember watching myself do that.
-our goalie sees the ball well low. he's really comfortable back there. now how do we develop our own.
-narewski has good size, does not feel like he gets enough help from the wings
-angelus has nice vision, the grimes goal was copied straight out of the fall ig stuff from that facility. pretty.
-teenage mutant ninja turtles love to eat anchovies pizza, teenage mutant ninja testudos will eat turnovers. too cavalier w/the ball.
-michigan a smaller stadium w/a blue governor and they have fans unless I was mistaken. I'm sure that was noticed by a few parents.
-wasn't sure if rowlett from michigan was related to the tar heel defenseman who really went at it w/our guys down there a few years ago.
-ruddy and szulak made their jhu debuts. I don't know anything about krampf or keneally either.
-forgot why they switched the blue from the royal blue when I arrived 19 years ago to whatever that was today.
-Millimans argument might've been that they need as many reps as possible. in some of the later years of petro when we really struggled, he stopped opening up the bench in blowouts because he wanted struggling regular veterans to get more run.
-6 wins from 1,000 in program history. Hopefully they'll do something for it when the fans return. Big accomplishment.

Stop counting chickens. We have a long way to go yet. This very well could be a spring 2022 celebration (with fans in attendance for it).

If I read your statement wrong, I apologize - but that sounded to me like you are counting on 6 more wins this year. Otherwise, I don't understand why you'd make the statement that you hope they'd do something to celebrate when the fans return, as it implies their absence when the event actually occurs.

We have work to do to get 6 more wins. Head down, stay focused.

Have you heard about this pandemic thing? Taken probably 6-700,000 people out of the big house all paying for tickets, parking, food, t-shirts, hats, jerseys - also Michigan is usually pretty to really good in basketball so take all the people who spend money there out of the equation too - I don't think the Wolverine AD would agree with you. Also I gave you your mantra - No one cares
jhu06 wrote: Sat Feb 27, 2021 11:32 pm my nightmare for this season involved a lot of transition goals given up on defense. they've done a nice job there.
Neither OSU or Mich inclined to run - Hopkins hasn't had to shut down fast breaks. I remember from '19 the announcers on this kick about Rutgers' "NASCAR offense" and 22 on OSU would seem to suggest they started their engines yesterday so if you are not going to count chickens that might be one flock to avoid just yet

I am sure that's what a coach would say - I am not sure I would sacrifice the injury potential for those reps. Maybe on defense given that many times at the end of a fairly lopsided score the other team seems to get a goal or two but Epstein and Deso don't need to be out there to run out the 80 seconds for one or two trips

Good win, that should build some confidence building a foundation. Talent is there minus a few pieces of athleticism at times but Epstein being healthy I think is the key for them

It was scary watching Rutgers blow out OSU, given that Ohio State blew us out.
The BIG should get four teams into the tournament this year, but they'll probably get three in.
I thought both transfers, Szuluk and Kirson, have looked good so far. DeSo has 10 points in two games, so that's double his production from last year.
That's three big wins for this coaching staff, bolstering the defense and getting great production out of a player that had all but disappeared.
I hope we see a competitive game against the Turtles next week. I'm sure Benson has this game circled on his calendar.
