This doesn't conflict with their overall educational message, which is: we're going to hold teachers criminally and civilly liable for doing their job "wrong". Whatever "wrong" means in the particular law.

The reason I bring it up is that it's not posturing. This bill will pass in 2 years. it's coming, no question.

And further, this is a template for Republican run States, who will follow suit.

So between the libs and these fake conservatives....teachers are running out of reasons to stay in their vocation.
Maybe that’s a good thing, and we can have mom and dad (or whatever you call it now) begin more home schooling of their kids or see more pop up smaller scales schools that stop teaching to a test to chase funding and focus more on an actual STEAM education.
That's some major-league "glass is half full", my man. Good on ya for that.

At issue? Students in the school were shown images of a Renaissance period sculpture, the “David,” leading to complaints that the children were shown pornographic material.”

So glad my kids are out of this nonsense…..if and when Grandchildren come along, it is private schools for them.
Just remember Jeffrey Epstein was a teacher at dalton…
I know….. we are going to let the “parents” decide what is taught in schools…. Hope it’s the smart parents…..the American Empire is on life support.

The American Media is what's really on life support, and they are going to go out in a blaze of fury and try take everybody down with them. Won't end well for them...

My buddy was over earlier today and told me his six year old gson had been kicked out of school and wouldn't be allowed back in til he got an okay from a doctor. I don't have all the details, hopefully I'll get them, but what I've been told so far sure sounds like a lot of garbage to me. Apparently the kids are being taught about "stranger danger" (is this something kids should be being taught in school?) and how to handle situations. When the six year old was presented with a situation and asked what he'd do he said he would get a machete and kill them (quite an imagination those six year olds have, eh?). He got kicked out of school for that answer and wouldn't be allowed back in until he got an okay from a doctor. Mommy took him to their Pediatrician to get signed what needed to be signed but he wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole (I get that part, Dr. aint gonna be no part of that liability). She then went to a child Psych and of course was told he would have to be put through a battery of tests before they would sign it. My buddy's wife is a nurse (different last name than the gson) so she signed it and put her nurse number on it
which got him back into school. This is part of the first grade curriculum? Sounds nuts to me. Oh, what do you figure Mommy does (Daddy too)? Yup, she's a teacher (HS math), Daddy's a science teacher.

Yeah, active shooter drills are a thing too.
I dunno what age is "ok", but 6 year olds apparently get shot...and some (one) apparently bring guns to school and shoot their teachers. Parent is being held liable for the latter...

And yeah, that's quite an imagination to come up with "machete" and "kill them"? What's the kid been watching on TV, the net?...what sorts of computer games is he playing or seeing mom and dad or older sibling playing?

And yeah, "stranger danger" has been a topic for that age group for quite awhile, if I'm not mistaken. Don't take the candy...

Thanks for cluing me in on teachers and kids getting killed.
This is the youngest of four, two brothers and a sister. Christian family, church goers every Sunday.
By all accounts a pretty good family, pretty much normal, kids do well in school, boys play soccer
(naturally) daughter is a gymnast, pretty well mannered, pretty well behaved.
Nice to have your six year old labeled as potential threat to society, better teach them how to
answer such questions when asked at school.

Absolutely it's better to teach them how to deal with these sorts of challenges in their very young lives, including what the appropriate answer is to this sort of question.

It's horrible that this needs to be the case.
I know you agree it's horrible and I also know you know why it needs to be part of what happens at school, given that so many parents are failing these issues....and more importantly, that the threats, at school, are very real.

So, if I was stating the obvious, it was only to address the question you raised. Not to be insulting.

And yeah, though you've described them in positive terms (and I assume fairly), I do think it's also a fair question as to what the heck the six-year old's influences are that he would come up such a specific response...maybe a little more diligence around that is called for?

Re the school's response...there is a huge lawsuit happening with the six year old who shot the teacher...school definitely had an inkling that the kid could be a threat, and didn't take it seriously...serious liability, big numbers.

Again, super horrible that this is the reality in our society.

I do get it but I don't think overreacting is beyond the real of possibility either. Guaranteed this kid is labeled and will be for a long time. Mommy is furious, a discussion with the Superintendent will be happening and I don't blame her. Had he been watching Zorro and said he would get a sword and kill them would it have been better? Kids say the darndest things, ya know.
This gal too aggressive, need evaluating?

What is your issue with it? I worked on a farm in the fields from age 12 - 16, 60 hours a week in the summer and 3-5 hours after school most days. Driving tractors, cutting, spearing, and hanging tobacco…all things farming.

It was not assigned to middle schoolers, nor made available to them through the school; the list was sent to parents, with a warning that there was adult material on it. The book was listed on a document of award-winning books.

why would an award-winning book be on a summer reading list? I'm sure the same question was asked when we were growing up about Fahrenheit 451, The Invisible Man, 1984, Animal Farm, anything about the Holocaust, Anne Frank's Diary of a Young Girl, Uris, Potok?...etc...can you think of any others that made some people super uncomfortable or downright mad? Ok, let's get to sex, Lady Chatterley's Lover? The Canterbury Tales? Joyce's Ulysses?

Still get banned by the troglodytes.

Gender Queer may well be something a particular parent would like to read, have their son or daughter read, as they consider the social issues of our times, the experiences children are going through. What do I read, suggest my child read, if my child is going through these questions of themselves? Not just any book, but here's an award-winning one. And it's pretty darn obvious what it's going to be about.

Note, getting kids to read over the summer is not easy, so the books suggested for consideration often include a wide range of topics that are socially relevant and engaging, challenging the reader to think...instead of just flipping through instagrams or watching cartoons...

And reading matters.

That is why.

You can watch the entire meeting. You'll also learn that this book was not assigned, and isn't even available to their middle school students. It was on a list of books that got an award which was attached to a summer reading list. AND THE TEACHER EVEN WARNED THERE WAS ADULT MATERIAL ON THE LIST.The school has also started it's review process for book's availability in the high school.

It's apparent a lot of people don't actually care about truth enough to gather the full context. 6:25 is a good place to start the video if you have a low level of investment or attention span. Bolding is mine:

There was a communication to some parents in our middle school that recommended and encouraged our students read over the summer, thanked the parents for the year and linked to our middle school reading list. Also attached a document with a couple of award winning lists, one being the Lincoln Award list. On that list was a book that has drawn a lot of attention. The teacher did point out that parents should look there is additional adult content and they should take that into consideration.

To be clear, if you go online our middle school website this book is not on our middle school reading list. It is also not a title that is in our middle school. It's an unfortunate situation that occurred and obviously we've done the best to rectify that with communication to the parents that received that.
The only communication about the book was to parents, not kids. And they were warned the list has adult content. And they were followed up with. This isn't people grooming 6th graders, this is grown ass parents that don't like that a list exists referencing books completely outside of their middle school that they don't like.

The list was sent to parents, right? Parents could pre-view the list and determine which, if any, of the books were relevant and appropriate to their children? Parents had complete and total veto power over the books listed, if they wanted to engage.

And they were followed up with. This isn't people grooming 6th graders, this is grown ass parents that don't like that a list exists referencing books completely outside of their middle school that they don't like.
  Glad to see you believe everything 'on the internet' and even cite the poster from reddit. Did you bother to click the youtube link   ....clearly not, b/c the link does not work. You are just regurgitating something from a poster on reddit.

Sure....hand your 11 year your old that summer reading list, about sucking dikc's with pictures...just splendid. Nice to see you'll tolerate damned near anything, and you then wonder why our education system is failing.
Nope, do it though the reddit. My copy and paste didn't link, but he tells you where to start. 6:25.

You have a problem with that book, don't give it to your middle schooler...the school doesn't. But if you have a kid struggling with these issues, make the call as to whether they are going to be scarred for life because they see a picture of such act, (which happens to be quite common heterosexually as well)...in the context of reading about these emotional struggles in an award winning book. You think your middle schooler hasn't found pornhub etc? Wake up.

11 year old? your call, parent.

You want to know why "our education system is failing"???
Because we don't value teachers and education enough to pay for more teachers, more teacher education, music and other arts, books...ever been to schools where the teachers pay for school supplies for the kids out of their own pockets?

On the other hand, pretty sure my elementary, middle, and upper schools continue to provide a super education...of course it costs parents (paying full rate) double what the highest cost per student public schools spend, and that's only a fraction of what those schools actually spend per student with the support of alumni giving...

But, hey, let's blame issues on too much, too many "woke" reading opportunities over the summer.
