"But the new analysis, published Thursday in the journal Nature Climate Change, draws on more than a century of ocean temperature and salinity data to show significant changes in eight indirect measures of the circulation’s strength.

These indicators suggest that the AMOC is running out of steam, making it more susceptible to disruptions that might knock it out of equilibrium, said study author Niklas Boers, a researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany.

If the circulation shuts down, it could bring extreme cold to Europe and parts of North America, raise sea levels along the U.S. East Coast and disrupt seasonal monsoons that provide water to much of the world.

“This is an increase in understanding … of how close to a tipping point the AMOC might already be,” said Levke Caesar, a climate physicist at Maynooth University who was not involved in the study."

Oren Lyons and the Iroquois were talking about this back in 2006 - Read this piece to see perhaps how prescient he (and they) were that long ago

Can get past the paywall for this article, but from several other articles about it:

The circulation is weaker than it has been in around 1,000 years, scientists had previously said, but they did not know whether it had actually been destabilized or undergoing natural changes.

No more cheeseburgers...or pick'em up trucks, boys.

"Cutting carbon dioxide is not enough to solve the climate crisis – the world must act swiftly on another powerful greenhouse gas, methane, to halt the rise in global temperatures, experts have warned.

Leading climate scientists will give their starkest warning yet – that we are rushing to the brink of climate catastrophe – in a landmark report on Monday. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will publish its sixth assessment report, a comprehensive review of the world’s knowledge of the climate crisis and how human actions are altering the planet. It will show in detail how close the world is to irreversible change.

One of the key action points for policymakers is likely to be a warning that methane is playing an ever greater role in overheating the planet. The carbon-rich gas, produced from animal farming, shale gas wells and poorly managed conventional oil and gas extraction, heats the world far more effectively than carbon dioxide – it has a “warming potential” more than 80 times that of CO2 – but has a shorter life in the atmosphere, persisting for about a decade before it degrades into CO2."

"A second community in western Canada has been destroyed by wildfire as authorities in the region scramble to contain the destructive toll of climate change.

Officials say the village of Monte Lake likely suffered extensive damage, but conditions remain too dangerous for a full assessment. The village, a popular summer holiday destination, has a seasonal population of nearly 3,000."

This time the wasteland isn't a teenager.

‘Get scared’: World’s scientists say disastrous climate change is here
The long-feared era of disastrous climate change has arrived.

For the first time, the planet's top scientists said in a monumental report released on Monday they have definitively linked greenhouse gas emissions to the type of disasters driven by a warmer climate that have touched every corner of the globe this year: extreme rainfall in Germany and China, brutal droughts in the western U.S., a record cyclone in the Philippines and compound events like the wildfires and heat waves from the Pacific Northwest to Siberia to Greece and Turkey.

This is the world as it exists today, with an atmosphere 1.1 degrees Celsius hotter than it was in the pre-industrial era. Even grimmer: There is no scenario in the new analysis by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in which the world avoids breaching the threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius that the U.S., EU and several other countries have set as a target. Even the weaker 2-degree target that major polluters China and India have set as guideposts will be eclipsed unless greenhouse gas emissions peak by mid-century.

Those numbers have real-world consequences for billions of people, with cascading impacts on agriculture, human migrations and even wars, numerous studies in recent decades have warned.

I think these folks have been making suggestions as to how to potentially defend or counteract these issues for a long time. The prescription is out there. This is just some new support to back it up, one wouldn’t expect the solution to always be included in every evidentiary piece of information to support a position.

So what? My point is...Instead of cowering in a corner, what are they doing to fix it?

Getting tough on China and the major offenders? Enacting new standards in the US?

Nope, just keeping policies roughly as-is. And complaining about it on the internet.

Making sure people are scared. Good!

I don’t disagree though this forum is to present ideas so in this world it seems fine to post that story but bigger picture what are a bunch of hypocrites doing about it is a fair question to ask. That being said of course fear is used all the time even by folks you support and defend around here regularly. Fear is used by your political heroes just like Dislaxxics political heroes or Brooklyn’s. Typically it’s the predecessor to action and reaction in the process of how things evolve.

You missed the big solution Kram, it is as plain as the nose on yer face. All it takes is trillions, and trillion, and trillions, and trillions and trillions and trillions and trillions of dollars invested. Then planet earth will be saved and alot of people will become very wealthy in the process. It has not and never will be an issue of saving the planet. We could not save the planet no matter how many trillions of dollars we try and invest. That does not mean we should all be good stewards of our planet. That means we humans should understand what we can and can't do to help keep our planet clean. The bottom line is nothing more than money, control and power. America is being told that in 10 years or so we will only be able to buy electric vehicles. There is nothing wrong with electric vehicles if you choose to buy one. There should be a problem with being told that is the only vehicle you can buy. How long before the only hamburger you can eat will be vegetable based faux meat? This can only happen because the American sheeple let it happen. Some of you stupid people are being conned into thinking you are helping to save the planet.
