Our founding fathers had to make difficult choices regarding the issue of slavery. They had to keep the interests of 13 individual colonies in mind as they tried to hammer out a declaration of independence. There had to be appeasement to the slave states or there never would have been a declaration of independence. Was it the wrong thing to do... hell yes it was. The biggest mistake the founding fathers ignored was not dealing with the issue after the war was won. It took another 70 plus years and a bloodbath of a civil war to finally decide the issue. There are other nations out there that have been fighting the same wars for thousands of years with no end in sight. The USA despite the rich white slave owners that helped carve out this nation gave us a blueprint to fix things that they got wrong. It has not always been easy and it has not always been fair but as a nation we are still trying to get it right. Those rich white slave owners gave us the US Constitution. I read "so called" and " white men of their times" as referring to the bias that is pretty much irrefutable, when there are no women or people of color at the table.
But, hey, what they did, despite such bias, was pretty darn extraordinary.
