Georgetown was only top five last year, for the first time in decades.

I also would not have them at #1, especially after seeing what Maryland did to Richmond last weekend.

But it’s fun to see a different take on things once in a while, especially this early in season.
And especially,
Terps in now year 4 of this run,
39 and 2, 0.951.
Fun lacrosse trivia: UMD's last regular season loss was to Villanova on 2/18 2020 right before the world shut down. It is a shame the terps and cats no longer play eachother. Was always a fun matchup to watch

Yes, we all know that. But doing what you did begs one to ask the question: Who cares?

Why? Your ranking is of no interest after one day of the season.
I do.
Me, too.

DocBarrister
Me too. Of course, anyone who is paying attention rather than whining understands that the ranking system is designed to eliminate bias (including prior year performance to the extent it can in the early weeks) and gets better as more data is generated over the season.

If you allow yourself to see past the "you're so stupid, Terps are #1 dude" mentality - HOW the rankings evolve over time is part of what is interesting about Matnum's methodology....

That Maryland loss was so long ago Keegan Khan and Owen Prybylski were Juniors on that Villanova team. I bet if you asked Tillman he'd say Khan and Prybylski left an impression on him after that game.

I am guessing right behind Loyola if I understand the algorithm.
If you start with last year's ranking, nobody has a better win than Loyola.

It's true. But they only have 1 win. JHU has 2. When everyone's played 1 game and only one game, things make clear sense. e.g. last week. Now that some teams have played 3 games while others have played one (or none and, as a consequence, they're not even on the list), things make sense but are substantially less clear. Until most every team has played at least three games, even better have three wins (keep in kind, the system is based on each team's three Best Wins... and three Worst Losses), the FanLax Computer is pretty quiet. The reason he's pretty quiet is the Rankings look like this (below) and people go ballistic. :) So he waits...

Ranking, Team, GP=Games Played, W%=Win Percentage, SOS=Strength of Schedule

– Team GP W% SOS
1 Johns Hopkins 2 100% 5
2 Loyola 1 100% 1
3 Merrimack 3 100% 42
4 Syracuse 2 100% 31
5 Rutgers 2 100% 32
6 UMass 1 100% 8
7 Navy 3 100% 51
8 Robert Morris 1 100% 17
9 Virginia 1 100% 23
10 Air Force 2 50% 7

Hey, Merrimack showed better against Hofstra than Navy did (a team a lot of people had in their top 20).

Merrimack is a scrappy very athletic team. They did just beat a depleted LIU team but the Hofstra win was nice. Also they beat Holy Cross. They can hang with teams but they haven't played anyone tough yet. Their goalie is very good. They also aren't eligible yet for tournament play until next season.

Based on each teams' 3 Best Wins and 3 Worst Losses, these are the D1 Men's Top 20. As a heads-up, the Ivies are at a distinct disadvantage as they've only played 2-3 games.

– Team GP W% SOS
1 Virginia 3 100% 5
2 Loyola 4 75% 4
3 Maryland 4 75% 7
4 Duke 5 80% 17
5 Johns Hopkins 5 60% 5
6 Richmond 4 75% 13
7 Penn State 4 75% 15
8 Cornell 3 100% 36
9 North Carolina 4 75% 18
10 Notre Dame 3 100% 46
11 Ohio State 4 75% 25
12 Rutgers 5 80% 35
13 Villanova 3 67% 8
14 Saint Joseph's 3 100% 53
15 Robert Morris 3 100% 57
16 Army 4 75% 34
17 UMBC 3 100% 61
