For some reason, I didn’t like R.E.M. when they first came out. Maybe because they weren’t a 60s band. But, boy, did I come to love them very quickly.

I was lucky enough to see them warm up for The English Beat in 1983 in Chapel Hill. Our group wanted to keep rolling with the pre-concert tailgate, but one guy convinced us to go inside to watch the opening act. He had heard great things about them from a buddy in Georgia. They blew away TEB. Nice reference in this song to a temporary ban on beer at UVA rush.

Tried to submit a top ten, but not sure I was successful. Here is the BS I tried to post:

1. Syracuse -- win over a good Northwestern team and a Maryland crew many of us thought might be the No. 1. Better goalkeeping and defense than I thought I'd see.

2. UNC -- beat JMU and Florida, so, you know, here.

3. Northwestern -- as much as it galls me....

4. BC -- this team should continue to improve. If there is a "good loss," the trip to NU and letting the game slip away is a good loss.

5. SBU -- No idea; here for now.

6. Maryland -- a lot to work on at both ends.

7. Denver -- tough to score on this outfit. If they can find goals, they will be a tough out.

8. Florida -- give this team to Spallina for a year....

9. Duke -- why did I not put Rutgers here?

10. Virginia -- Maybe I should have put Rutgers here?

Florida really is their own worst enemy.

can't figure out how to post a poll, not sure I can come up with a top 10 and am a week late - but here is my top 6!

1. Syracuse - playing with more discipline than usual, dangerous offensive team, and goalie looks good so far!
2. BC - dangerous team that I think will keep getting better
3. Northwestern - scane train may set NCAA record for most shots in a season
4. North Carolina - I think last year's UNC team would beat this year's UNC team by 7+ goals, they miss the Greater One!
5. Stony Brook - never quite a top 4 team, this may be the year
6. Maryland - probably most disappointing team so far since they had such high expectations - offense isn't there and defense is a mess
