When Gary played for Cuse he played with a ton of confidence and a whole lot of flair (understatement), he and company created a mighty big buzz in the world of lacrosse. Gotta say he's coming on the scene as the mlax coach pretty much the same way. Gary brings Dave with him???? Whoda ever thunk that in a gazillion years?? I'm calling that move as bold with a capital B. Gotta say I love it and I can't imagine the Hop faithful being anything but sick about the whole deal. There is no way that this duo doesn't bring a whole new a whole look and vibe from Cuse lacrosse, the program has been in need of this kind of jolt for quite some time now. This should be very interesting. Gary's proven to be an outstanding coach in the wlax world, when you listen to the people in that world talk about him and what he brings to the game it's nothing but very high praise and I don't doubt that he'll do the same on the mlax side. I feel bad for the wlaxers who just lost Gary Gait as their coach but I can't say I'm not happy to see him as the mlax coach.

Question is will Don Petriemala be driving a Bugatti or Ferrari to the Syracuse Suds Factory and Hungry Chucks in 2 years?

Gosh, kids don’t know who Petro and GG are because they never saw them play? Really?

The kids generally love them judging by their reaction at camps etc.

If they get a call or a text they will respond in most cases even if they choose another program. The doors will be open. It will take a couple of years to sort out the roster mess and put their program in place.

So I am a highly valued recruit and I get a call from Peter Milliman. Did I ever see him play? Has he ever won with players he recruited as stars? Did Teat or Donville or Morrill transfer to Hopkins to play for him?

Did any recruits see Danowski or Tillman or Breschi star in school? These two are legends and two GOATs. The kids know who they are.

They’ll respond to them because it’s Syracuse and it’s one of the most well known programs in the sport. They’re not going to respond just because it’s Gait and Petro. If Gait and Petro were at Jacksonville they wouldn’t pull in elite talent

Have you changed your position on Petro's weight impacting his ability to recruit and connect to players because kids prefer to have a slim, muscular role model?

Coach Gait has been successful as a coach at lacrosse in all formats
Men's, Women's, Box, MLL, NLL, International

He has a World wide reputation as an ambassador of the game and was one of the most creative players ever offensively.

Now add Coach Pietramala in his 2nd Act as Coach, NCAA Champion as a player & coach and was one of the most creative players ever defensively.

as for recruits not knowing who they are as they didn't watch them play live...

Do Baseball recruits know who Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig were?

Do Basketball recruits know who Michael Jordan & Magic Johnson are?

Confidence & flair is right

Yes. John Galloway is the best goalie in the world and one of the best lacrosse players of his generation; which is much more close to the current crop than Petro or Gait and... you see any 5-stars going there?

I coach HS kids....they know Petro is a coach at JHU and gait used to be a good player and doesn't he make equipment now....not much more than that. If Cuse picked Lyle Thompson or Tom Schreiber or Grant Ament...they'd be wowed. We take our sport a bit too seriously.

It’s pretty hilarious how everyone is acting like Petro hasn’t been....a coach for 30 years. These HS kids know him as the dude who was recruiting them 2 years ago, not the guy who was an All-American defender

I will never change my opinion that D1 lax coaches should look more like an athlete than a walking advertisement for Big Boy Blimpy's Bountiful Burgers Buffet with unlimited trips to the troth.

As for the comments about kids not knowing who Gary Gait is, I find that quite hard to believe. You figure they know what the Air Gait is? Was watching one of the post season wlax games, am struggling to remember who the commentator was but I think it was Michele Tumolo. There was a discussion about Gary and how he is regarded as a coach and what he's brought to their game. Michele said she remembered the day Gary entered the room as the new HC for Cuse wlax, said she was actually a little nervous and awestruck as she viewed him as a legend and super star lacrosse player. She went on to say that he immediately lightened the room with a comical comment and he was just known as Gary from there on out. This was relatively recently...kids know who Gary Gait is, even the girls do.

Something that might only interest me.

For the numerologists out there, thought it was ironic that '22 (the season) will be a rare year without #22 on the roster.

Does Gait hand out the number to anyone this coming season? The number would look good on Hiltz. Does he wait for class of '22 Joey Spallina?

So much intrigue...not really.

Would it be better to retire the number now that the original is at the helm? Perhaps Gary can wear a golden #22 on his lapel during the games ? Does Gary even continue donning suits on the sideline? Will the slimming nature of these suits get Petro to consider an upstate haberdashery? Will I continue to ask ridiculous questions? No.

That was Halley Quillinan Griggs that said that about Gary Gait if I’m not mistaken, DMac. I think Quint mentioned that on the inside lacrosse podcast. Also, I agree with you— not buying the narrative that kids these days don’t know who Gary Gait is. If you are a lacrosse player, man or woman, and don’t know who Gary Gait is, why are you even playing lacrosse? They know full and well who he is. Maybe not the kids who are just starting lacrosse, but the ones I who are in middle school/high school, yes.

Because your parents are making you? Because you need something to do in the spring? Because you're good at it? The kids who play lacrosse are not us, spending our time talking about it all the time on message boards. They just play it

I agree with that to an extent— but are the kids who just play it, like you suggest, the ones being recruited by D1 coaches? Highly doubt it. The ones who love the sport know who Gary Gait is, period.

So they pick up their sticks, go out and play, put the sticks down, and that's it for lacrosse. No message boards, watching no games, never heard about the Gaits or Pietramalas, Cuse's eleven titles, the '90 Cuse team considered by many to be the best ever, etc, etc, etc. Hard to believe. When I was a HS laxer and there was a game at Bart, Cornell, Ithaca, Cortland, Cuse, you can bet I and a couple of teammates would be at those games, lacrosse didn't end when we put our sticks down and it's mighty hard for me to believe today's kids are all that much different in that respect.

Sure. Those kids don't have time to watch D1 lacrosse, they're spending all their weekends and summers playing in HS games or club tournaments

Yes, I highly doubt an 11th grader right now could tell you all about the 1990 Syracuse team. This board is like the 99th percentile of lacrosse fan interest. It's not the norm
