Good question...I always see it called as a foul. In general, a stick check that goes up is not allowed (i.e. on the head of the crosse), but I dont know about that butt end check.
Rule 6 - Fouls and Penalty Administration
Sec. 1 n. Illegal use of the stick
5. Using the webbed area of one’s stick to hook the bottom end of an opponent’s stick

Illegal under Section 6.n.5: "Using the webbed area of one's stick to hook the bottom end of an opponent's stick" falls under Illegal Use of the Stick

So no, but still a great way to potentially slow play down through the midfield if you can dislodge the ball. Safer than a check or making contact, which can result in cards. Really a "why not" kind of play.

Not to take away from current coach - she obviously can do her job. Spencer was there only 3 years after some turmoil - which I am not encouraging the discussion of. Would imagine the Hanover location and academic requirements would be a hurdle, but she obviously left the team in good standing which I think is impressive based on timeline. Good on them. Will be interesting to watch Stanford trajectory over the next few years. My lacrosse nerd side is showing. Loving all the games that are making 5-20 spots unpredictable ! I'm also kind of fascinated by Ivy tiers of success and the why's and why nots for those teams.
I understand Spencer has already had significant verbal commitments at Stanford, which may or may not be public yet.

I would assume that many/all of the soph and junior classes are Spencer's. Are the seniors Patten recruits? Either way, a lot of very able players who played today with an impressive discipline. Frank and Spencer are from the same coaching and playing lineage, and it is clear that Dartmouth is a good fundamentals team. They clear well, play good defense over long periods, play patient offense, shoot pretty well, are good at the FP line. All in all, I came away very impressed.

Florida remains the cross-checking roller coaster ride that I thought it was.

Matnum, still think we are low-balling the Gators?

I guess that's why I'm curious. Can be a mix of Patton's recruiting and players Spencer picked up later or got to switch - Ivy is also a different entity. Either way, like I said good for them and good for lacrosse.

They were smart to eat big chunks of clock down the stretch too.

Exactly; clock management under pressure is a sign of good coaching and intelligent kids.

Every kid on the field today for Dartmouth was recruited by Amy Patton, with 1 exception. That said, this was a team win .. credited by head coach Alex Frank to "all 35 players". Well deserved props on the forum for Frank and her staff.

It is also the case that Dartmouth is playing all new defensive and attack schemes this season ... so the style of play in 2020 is not related to the previous 3 seasons.

Watching replay of this game. Big Green have some speed and good athletes that Florida probably was not expecting.

I’m trying to understand why Gators would schedule this game. Extremely hard school to get to, long trip from FL, early season and weather could’ve been much worse than it was, only to turn around and fly home. They didn’t even tack another game up in New England onto the trip. Plus, why go that far to play a game that you’re expected to win? Doesn’t really make sense to me.

Maybe the front end of a home and home series?

That may be. There must be some back story, though, why Florida would go all the way to Hanover in early March instead of other comparable Ivies (or teams in other conferences) that are much easier to access, which is pretty much every Ivy other than the Big Red. I'm assuming part of the motivation is O'Leary's history with the Ancient Eight.

"...O'Leary's history with the Ancient Eight."

That had slipped my mind. Surely possible. A lot of times it is a game given by an old coach to a younger former player; not the case here, of course (either with Frank or Spencer, even assuming scheduling happened before Spencer went off to beautiful Palo Alto.

Agreed, anyway, about Dartmouth's athletes. Good speed, good coaching, a few proven scorers, good discipline clearing and on D = a tough out for anyone.
