I think slavery would be less of an issue if post emancipation local, state and federal government had held up its end of the bargain. … Johnson, Grant and others were the Donald Trumps of their time - just saying it makes it so. The big mistake made was by northern historians and politicians allowing the South to rewrite the history of the period. But at the end of the day as Lincoln said, the war was not about ending slavery. It was treated as a punishment for revolting rather than as something so clearly right an imperative of any human society.

I would hate to think that these particular vandals could be so stupid not to know who Fredrick Douglas was. I was under the impression that vandalizing and defacing statues was restricted to those that somehow or someway had negative symbolism? I guess it is just open season on all statues?

I think criminal mischief would work. I don't know. When they finally reach end of the trail of beer bottles they will find the culprits.

There needs to be more accountability.
Those who call in false charges need to be prosecuted, like this woman.
And I'd be happy to see financial damages sought against bad cops (and their unions) who press charges that end up being thrown out in court.
