Yup. The country as a whole has become fat, dumb and happy. That is the real and most fundamental problem. Too many think change is bad, especially if it is change they can't control.

'Change' = tearing down statues of Columbus, Washington, Jefferson, and naturally, Frederick Douglass! Also, 'Change' = rioting and looting every store in NYC, Portland, Minneapolis, Chicago, St. Louis, Seattle, and you get the picture. 'Change' = higher murder rates especially for young kids.

Change is great everyone!
change == removing entrenched racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, laws, customs & beliefs (and elected leaders who support these) from society (office); fulfilling the dream embodied in the Declaration of Independence. Actually become a nation that Peanut Butters only pays lip service too.

It is pretty clear that he for now at least has shifted into a full on racist campaign. And it will be interesting to see if this actually leads to a gain real support or just more solidification of his slowly dwindling cadre of hard core supporters.

He basically is giving anyone not in the toilet for him lots of reasons to vote the other way.

I agree, but we should all work as much as we can for ourselves. I see a lot of MAGA folks who are distressed in their situations because they were complacent. I took advantage, if you think this way, of my male white privilege or whatever you want to define it as (I find the term white privileged pejorative, have to be a better description but in the grand scheme of problems people have complaining about an advantage is goofy) and am thankful for it. Recognize that there’s part of the population that’s structurally disadvantaged. Don’t care for wealth transfers principally as it allows for government to buy favor but recognize some is necessary, just would prefer it’s not managed by insular career politicians or frankly anyone who lives or works in the DC bubble but it is what it is.

Everyone should try their hardest and not whine, we should help those who are working to help themselves and let the ones who are crying and yelling and not utilizing whatever opportunity that comes their way “die on the vine”. What I see across the east coast and in my own business travels is the ones disadvantaged generally complain a heck of a lot less than the ones born into more favorable situations. Less law and regulation, IMO, and when we create or more realistically layer on, new laws they should be rifle shot targeted at supporting those who truly exemplify the American ethos which I often compare to Weber’s Protestant ethic and spirit of capitalism. Participate, work hard and utilize opportunities and we should support that while maintaining liberties for all of us.

… I know you are not surprised. I have given some thought to all this silly statue stuff. It is a shame that it has come to this.

The one that hits the closest to home is the Baltimore Columbus statue. So many truly great Italians to choose from, and some in the Italian American community are attached to a myth. Columbus didn't discover the New World; a number of Vikings got here first, evolving evidence that even Chinese navigators may have reached our shores 100s of years earlier; not to mention Asian immigrants settled the land 10 thousand years earlier. Columbus never set foot on any part of what is now the US or either of the American continents. The Columbus statue is nothing but 20th century marketing of what was by and large a 15th-16th century marketing job. There are more deserving Italians and more deserving explorers actually associated with the US.

Getting exercised over Columbus is just dumb. If I were Italian I would not take this personally. This is not an attack on Italians.

Let's erect something to Leonardo or Galileo in the inner harbor - men who were gifts to the world, rather than an enslaver of native Americans.

I think slavery would be less of an issue if post emancipation local, state and federal government had held up its end of the bargain. Slavery could be known as “THE dark chapter in American history”....unfortunately chapters keep being added to that book and it’s 2020. At every point that the country has to turn the corner, we don’t do it. We just let it fester for another generation. If we had done they right thing post emancipation, nobody would be bogged down on slavery....or it would be a lesser issue.
