So let me get this straight. If we pay our debts, then why do we need to raise our debt ceiling? Is the US gov't running a ponzi scheme we currently know nothing about?
Lemme explain in simplistic terms, under the assumption that you are genuinely asking.

I want to put a new kitchen in my house. But I don't have enough cash on hand, so I go to bank and I take out a home equity line based upon my good credit and the equity value of my house. I hire a contractor, pay him a deposit using the credit line, he does the work, and I pay him when due out of the credit line.

My home is now worth more, but I owe more against it. Over time, I pay interest on this debt and all the while the equity value of my home goes up (hopefully) and from time to time I consolidate my debts into a larger first mortgage, paying off the old.

Now, in that example I don't need to go to Congress to get my "debt limit" increased, I simply go to the bank. But the US gov't needs to get explicit permission to go to the markets and offer our debt to the best bidder...simply to refinance what has already been obligated (to the contractor).

It's a dumb requirement, as we already decided to hire the contractor, already signed the contract with him...are we gonna stiff him or are we going to borrow some cash and pay our bills as due?

no worries, same scenario, just somewhat less...unless I screw something up and then that might cost even more! ;)

I'm definitely in the "get a guy" camp...there are guys who spend their whole lives becoming expert at what they do...pay'em.

I understand your point. I spent more money than I should have over my lifetime collecting all of the tools I have today. I have done it all from roofing to cinder block foundations to electrical and plumbing. The issue now is understanding sometimes I can't do it all anymore.

Biden announced goal of universal broadband internet access by 2030.

Another point for Biden that he's actually running the country.

Anyone think rural Americans will thank him for GIVING this handout from their fellow taxpayers?

(yeah, me neither).

This is part of the infrastructure bill. It's ensuring access to broadband, not giving it away. Although that is likely the next step.

Of course it's giving it away. Money for it all comes from the Federal .gov.

And to be clear----I'm all for it. But that's yet another glaring example of: small government doesn't work for rural America. They MUST have Federal money to survive.

The problem, as you and I are discussing, is the denial from rural Americans that refuse to acknowledge they cannot maintain even basic 1st world services without Big Government spending coming from DC. They'll take this free infrastructure that their friends in large cities pay for, pocket it, and pretend it never happened.

This is why our country is unmanageable. Picture raising a 10 year old who is convinced that mowing the lawn once a week is what's putting food on the table, and a roof over everyone's head. Yep, you're working. Yep, you're mucking in. But's it isn't anywhere CLOSE to what is needed to keep a rural community alive.

Most large cities/gov'ts don't pay for broadband.
These large cities get PAID by VZ etc. to be able to install it. Those companies own and maintain the capital plant, not the gov't.
These rural areas don't have broadband because the companies have no interest in running it to the boonies to serve 20 families in a small town. So small government doesn't get the "L" in this one, as much as you'd hoped.
;)

You lost me. You're making my point....bolded above.

Rural areas don't get internet without Federal subsidies because, as you astutely point out, there aren't enough customers.

And obviously, you can say the same thing about hospitals, schools, roads, and infrastructure. Which is why I keep telling you that rural American can't keep the lights out without big Federal spending.

Which is why Joe Biden is sending the internet to rural America instead of the Governor of Iowa.

awkward, not racist.
Anyone who remotely gives him the benefit of the doubt, understands what he's trying to say about the disadvantages a less well funded entrepreneur would have in getting a venture off the ground...and certainly it's the case that funding has been much easier for white entrepreneurs than black, including the personal assets each group, statistically, bring to the table. Obviously, any individual case is another matter.

You make me laugh when you get in your spin zone. So are you saying that there are plenty of black entrepreneurs, just not many black lawyers and accountants to help them out and that white ;awyers and accountants do not want to help black entrepreneurs out? I do not get the correlation spin you just posted. Are you writing Psaki's daily updates? ;)

nope, I think what he meant, though certainly awkward, was that underfunded entrepreneurs are less likely to be able to afford good legal and accounting counsel relative to well funded entrepreneurs. And there's really no argument that black entrepreneurs are less well funded than white...

But ok, if you want to call that "racist" I understand why some folks see value in doing so.

I don't. And I think he's often been awkward on race, though I also don't have much doubt about where he falls on the relative scale of old white guys. And it ain't on the racist end of that scale.

You're gonna tell me that Clyburn thinks these remarks are racist???
After all, it's not the first time Biden has used that line and surely Clyburn would have told him if he didn't agree, right? Here's his full remarks today at an HCBU, invited by Clyburn:https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-roo ... -ceremony/

My employees have to agree with me? since when?

The speech was today, at the HCBU where Clyburn had attended but never actually got his diploma many years ago. Clyburn invited Biden to attend and speak, at 'winter commencement' and if I'm not mistaken, Biden gave Clyburn is diploma...and sat next to each other the rest of the time.

The particular line, and its reasoning, had been used previously.

But hey, if you wanna think the crowd thought it was racist, go ahead.
Maybe some did...but Twitter comments???

In these discussions, Senator Manchin has reiterated his support for Build Back Better funding at the level of the framework plan I announced in September.
