Race to the bottom by the GOP.
Narrowing their base, alienating independents.

I don't know what the breaking point will be in Florida, but if you keep passing legislation that 60+% of US citizens disagree with, you're going to lose a whole lot of elections nationally. Rhetoric is one thing, actual legislation makes the extremism real.

Extremist legislation on guns and reproductive rights may be what ultimately break the fever in Florida, they're certainly doing so in places like Wisconsin.
California went through all of this in the 1990s. California had a bigoted, racist Republican governor. White conservatives passed Prop 187. White xenophobes passed anti-immigration bills.

It was all futile. White moderates and liberals joined Latinos, African Americans, Asian Americans and others to take over the state, making the Golden State into a laboratory of liberal ideas and policies. California is now the greatest and most powerful state in the nation. We are a global powerhouse with an economy larger that Russia and India’s.

The MAGA crowd is still here, of course, but they have been relegated to insignificance. Kevin McCarthy is Speaker, but not even the most magnificent manor can be free of cockroaches.

That is the inevitable future faced by the Republican Party. In a couple of decades, when the aging far right has largely died out, today’s liberal young Americans will control the nation, and the nation will be better for it.

California is just a preview of America’s future, and it is glorious.

:D funny.

Doc gets a bit hyperbolic, but I think there's a very significant reality that the next generation bulge of voters, across the country, including in deep red states, is vastly more liberal on a whole series of social issues than prior generations and the older set is desperately trying to hold on, tacking ever further backward looking.

Whether it's reproductive rights or guns, or gender and sexual preference, or ethnic, racial and religious diversity and inclusion, or economic opportunity and equity, or police reform and public safety, or voting access and democracy, the 60+% opinion issues nationally are 80+% issues in the younger voter set.

They're coming, more diverse and more "liberal".
And that scares the bejesus out of the current power structure.

And that power structure is providing extreme examples in the red states which really incense them. And the vast moderate middle too. Right wing extremism, especially on issues that have 60+% national support the other way, won't stand forever.

On the other hand, I think pendulums inevitably swing, so when we see "liberal" extremism play out miserably (think needles and "reparations"), there's backlash to these from the moderate majority as well.

First time I have visited the Politics tab. And this thread.

Our politicians and lobbyists on both sides of the aisle have succeeded in their goal of creating a chasm - with an uncrossable toxic river running through it - which guarantees the likelihood of productive progress toward reaching achievable solutions regarding gun ownership is less than zero.

Our warped, biased, and bifurcated press - BOTH left and right - owned by elite economic untouchables and corporations - amplify and fan the flames of fear and discontent daily regarding this issue...and they double down when another damaged sociopath utilizes inanimate objects to carry out animated hate and murder.

The citizenry - according to plan - angrily divides into two indignant camps, both of which are incapable of engaging in reasoned, statistical and fact-based discourse that could lead to achievable and sustainable mitigation of the factors which are at the root of the societal disease unfolding before our eyes in real time.

About a decade ago I became intrigued with this hot button "gun issue". I took my liberal arts education and dug as broadly and deeply as I could, mind open (and ongoing to this day). What I learned was surprising, disheartening, and downright mind-blowing. Suffice it to say I have become increasingly disgusted with the obfuscation, smoke & mirrors, and shockingly uneducated hot takes of our leaders - BOTH left and right - deployed then - and now - under the guise of actually caring about finding solutions and implementing real and achievable change regarding this gun violence's root causes. Patient: "Hey, Doc. I've got a sharp pain in my chest". Doctor: "Let's have a look at that ankle". While we all get played, the band plays on...

While this has been fun, I hereby permanently stand down from the Politics tab on fanlax. Carry on, folks!

Good, because believing both sides are equally at fault is the problem and will solve nothing. There’s a dramatic difference in how the current Rs approach the opposition. Those who don’t acknowledge that means they’re one of two things: either ignorant or know the difference but are gaslighting.

Get back to us when Ds attempt to change election results with false electoral college ballots or impeach a few Rs because of a difference of opinion.

Thanks for this; it'll make the families whose people are dead and whose lives are shattered feel a lot better. Your response is a perfect fit for a GOP Congressman or Senator. How proud you must be for this little quip.

 Yea....that's what I want, GMaFB.

You just can't let yourself say it can you, the mfer is dead thanks to the cops and guns, two things your party have clearly argued against. And yet, if he didn't die, your brethren attorney's would be continuing their cognitive dissonance profession trying to get this guy back on the street ASAP, and likely suing the police department for violating his rights.
