Socialism. Medicare and Social security. Would you like to see the graphs that show this?
Priceless
Ahh just the programs keep us living. Just government.

Not the diiscoveries not the medicines not the protocols.

You people really are something.
You realize that almost all drugs that get approved started out with .gov research money....when they turn out to be billion dollar blockbusters, we, the ones that funded the research, get nothing.

I quite agree with your point.
But not sure I'd go so far as to say we get "nothing". Hopefully the drugs actually do benefit us.
Not so sure about why we need 69 different ED drugs, but, yeah drug development, made possible by federally funded research, has a pretty darn good societal ROI.

On the other hand, how these drugs are priced here in the US and internationally sure as shooting deserves attention!
Nothing as to a ROI on our initial investment...or ownership

Yup, like a lot of societal investments we make through government, the payback isn't necessarily in an ownership interest in the profit stream of the commercial sector.

What frustrates me much more than not getting a royalty return on basic research investments, is that so much of our total healthcare costs could be addressed by smarter policies around food, instead of phamaceuticals. Heck, we could 100% pay for free (healthy) food and get huge ROI.

https://www.fastcompany.com/90323580/pr ... ical-costs

Instead, we subsidize the sugar industry and indiscriminately provide food subsistence for those in need without regard to what is healthy versus unhealthy. Really dumb.

 Yeah, we're something alright. Who do you think pays for the R&D for the drugs? And then who do you think pays for the drugs themselves? Yep. The government.

Wanna guess how many of the 210 drugs that the FDA approved between 2010 and 2016 received Federal R&D funding?

5? 20? 100?

Nope. All of them.

Every single drug, received Federal funding. Damn socialists. But don't let the reality of the socialism you hate get in the way of the "free market" illusion perpetuated by the Republicans and FoxNation.....right before they take more of my money to fund the Pharmaceutical companies bottom line.

I would expect approved drugs to receive funding. The question I have is what % of drugs that entered into trials received ultimate funding.

One question is what is the return on equity for big pharmaceutical

Ahead of his departure to Atlanta, the President told reporters "we're down about 17% with the opioid problem."

"We're down about 17% from last year, which is pretty amazing. We're down about 17% with the opioid problem. It's a big problem. It's a big addiction and we're handling it," Trump said. "We've made a tremendous amount of progress."
More word salad...what's down 17%? Deaths?

Nah....it's a dig. You can't help yourself, the negativity. Long? tRump appointed Geoffrey S. Berman. You know, the southern district guy that raided Cohens law office? Arresting wacko pipe bombers and Congress folks for insider trading....that kind of stuff took it so long. INteresting that AFANS nytimes article and comments do NOT mention tRumps name. Once. If we are talking developmental funding, that is supplied long before there is any kind of trial. Drug trials are generally the last step prior to FDA market approval. Note the FDA never approves of the drug itself, they only approve or disapprove its marketing and sale to the public.

but, without that approval, what happens? Of COURSE they approve the drug, you are splitting hairs with the marketing mumbo jumbo.

Either way, when is tRump going to push to have Dole Bayh repealed? AOC and Lizzie Warren will go along. Howz about all you pretend liberals? Nope, didn't think so.

So the NIH research funding from 2010—2016 was 100 billion?

Pfizer paid 14.5 billion in federal taxes in 2017. Merck paid 5.5 billion. Johnson and Johnson paid 13.6 billion in federal taxes. So the government had an ROI of 31 Billion in just one year from just 3 Pharmaceutical companies.

In 2018 Pfizer employed 92,400 people—paid salaries, wage taxes SS sales taxes property taxes etc?

Billions in payouts to shareholders.

Those evil baztidz

First of, yet again, you show you're just fine with socialism. So are all the viewers of FoxNation....half of them viewing Fox using Federally subsidized cable/internet connections. You just don't want to admit that our entire economy is heavily socialized.

     And for heaven's sake, that's not the ROI. This is Republican math in a nutshell.

You left out the entire reason we collect taxes. You know: the expenses. Remember those? Or do you think that the money we need for soldiers, aircraft carriers, roads and bridges falls from the sky?

And we wonder why Republicans keep outspending the Democrats. Look no further. Adding and subtracting is too much to ask.

If you really want an actual ROI? We should get a piece of each patent that is obtained using Federal Funding of any kind. We don't. Why? Because we don't hold our Congressmen to account, regardless of party. So they give it away.

6. Pfizer
Pfizer, one of the largest prescription drug companies in America, not only paid no federal income taxes from 2010 to 2012, it received $2.2 billion in tax refunds from the IRS at the same time it made $43 billion in profits worldwide.

In 2012, Pfizer stashed $73 billion in profits offshore and has used aggressive offshore tax strategies to avoid paying U.S. income taxes.

Ian Read, the CEO of Pfizer, made $17.7 million in total compensation last year.

Hank McKinnell, Jr., who was Pfizer’s CEO from 2001 to 2006, received a golden parachute from Pfizer worth an estimated $188 million.
9. Merck
In 2009, not only did Merck pay no federal income taxes, it received a $55 million tax refund from the IRS, even though it earned more than $5.7 billion in U.S. profits.

In 2012, Merck stashed $53.4 billion in offshore tax haven countries to avoid paying income taxes. If this practice was outlawed, it would have paid $18.69 billion in federal income taxes.

Fred Hassan, the CEO of Merck from 2003 to 2009, received a golden parachute worth an estimated $189 million.

Merck’s current CEO, Kenneth Frazier, has a retirement account worth an estimated $14.4 million. He wants to raise the eligibility age for Medicare and Social Security to 70 and make significant cuts to Social Security as a member of the Business Roundtable.

The federal government has always funded the greater part of R&D. The cut back in Federal funding has hurt the economy.

Best example is probably NASA. The benefits to the economy is still throwing off new businesses and products and jobs I believe.

The tax revenue justifies the investment but as a fan points out ROI is meaningless.

ROE on major pharma would be meaningful but has to be adjusted and I don’t have the knowledge of the sector to analyze it.

One reason healthcare is so expensive and exploding is pharma. Medicines here cost far more than in other advanced economies. The variance is so great there is no market justification for it.

Pharma reaps profits and healthcare is xo expensive here because of our healthcare system. As a fan pointed out our patent system is a huge system that needs to be amended.

That won’t happen as long as “Capital” controls everything.
