The other day I attended a preseason scrimmage between Murray Hill and Cretin-Derham Hall scholastic hockey squads. It was 90 minutes of shoot 'em up puck in which the refs went by the Old Hudson Bay rules ~ that is, the refs kept the whistle in their pockets and let the players police themselves. No ticky tacky crapola calls, with lots of physicality and open ice play. JUST LET THEM PLAY! Hockey the way we old schoolers like it. Man oh man - that was FUN!
I wish you guys had been there to see it with me. You would all have agreed that this is the way the game should always be played.

Re: For hockey fans...
there's nothing quite like old school puck:
You old timers will likely recall how Dave Schultz made a catcher out of Dale Rolfe. While there remains no doubt that Philly was a lot more physical in the series, I think their work rate was just a bit underrated (esp in the forecheck). As always, NYR had a puny PP game with something like 20 such opportunities without scoring.
Back to Schultz - while he was known as a fierce enforcer in his time, afterwards he largely renounced the game's violence:
DAVE SCHULTZ: A LETTER TO MY SON ABOUT VIOLENCE
https://www.nytimes.com/1982/02/07/spor ... wanted=all
Dear Chad:
Now that you are 6 years old and playing organized hockey, I would like to tell you my feelings about the game and try to explain the recent incidents involving a few major leaguers named Paul Mulvey, Jimmy Mann and Paul Gardner, as well as a coach named Don Perry.
You've seen the headlines: ''Mann Breaks Gardner's Jaw.'' ''Los Angeles Coach Orders Player Into a Fight.'' ''Herb Brooks Challenges Tom Watt.'' I couldn't fault you for wondering what was happening to the game of hockey, which I played professionally for 11 years. Judging by all the fighting on ice you hear about you might get the mistaken impression that this is the way hockey actually is and, what's more, the way it should be. I can see why you would find it difficult to make such a distinction.
Let me say, first of all, that as a player your dad was not an angel. Far from it. I set a National Hockey League record for penalties and was nicknamed The Hammer because of the manner in which I bounced my fist off the enemy's head. My penalty record is nothing to be proud of and the fighting I did as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins is not something I would like you to emulate. Quite the opposite. When it comes to hockey violence, your dad speaks first hand ...

Ex-teammates corroborate former NHL player Akim Aliu's claim that Flames coach Bill Peters used racial slur
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/n ... 309176002/

Former Blackhawks prospect Akim Aliu has accused Calgary Flames coach Bill Peters of directing racial slurs at him when Aliu played for the Rockford IceHogs a decade ago.
Aliu tweeted Monday that Peters, then the IceHogs coach, “dropped the N bomb several times towards me in the dressing room in my rookie year because he didn’t like my choice of music.” Aliu said he “rebelled against him,” and Peters responded by asking Hawks executives John McDonough and Stan Bowman to send Aliu to a lower minor-league level.
Flames general manager Brad Treliving told reporters Tuesday that the team has made no determination on Peters’ job status, despite reports that Peters had been fired. Peters was not on the ice for practice Tuesday.

Froggy Carr used Philly's Gritty as its theme for the Mummer's Parade. Unfortunately, 2 members decided to appear in full black face which led to the group's disqualification from the proceedings:

Canada vs Russia ~ IIHF World Junior's:
Outstanding finale.
While both teams were stacked with future NHL stars, I particularly enjoyed watching Canada's Alexis Lafrenière:

Barring injury, he may well be the NHL's next super star a la Gretzky.

Stopping all 33 shots he faced, New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist recorded his first shutout since 2017 in the Rangers' 1-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings ... 64th career shutout for the future Hall of Famer. Just imagine what his record would have been if the NYR had been a better team all these years.
