Lots of detail below, but the upshot is that Homewood will be open in the spring. Assuming that remains the case and there isn't a big change before January, I don't see any reason why lacrosse wouldn't then participate in a season:

That's why I said as long as there isn't a big change....I think there'd need to be a pretty considerable change to the climate for them to abandon what are clearly very elaborate plans for a return to campus. I think the lines about how peer institutions have done so successfully, and how there haven't been any reported outbreaks among the students who did return to campus, are both fairly telling. Of course they have to say this isn't set in stone in the event something happens that necessitates they jump ship. That is obviously possible and I would put the chances of that occurring well above 0 but as someone who was and remains pessimistic about the virus in general, this still seems like good news to me. Maybe I'm wishthinking.

Everyone go vote if you haven't already.

JHU Centennial Conference cohort Swarthmore cancels spring sports season.

https://swarthmoreathletics.com/news/20 ... 9-faq.aspx

Talk that the Centennial and ODAC will make decisions about spring athletic competition this week.

If the Centennial cancels, it doesnt necessarily make sense for JHU to keep the whole athletic department open just for lacrosse. Might be good for the new coach to be able to get his feet under him, before having to jump into a loaded B1G.

Why is that? The athletic department is going to be "open" no matter what the Centennial decides. The athletic staff will still have to do their jobs...not like the entire department just closes down and nobody works if the conference isn't officially playing in the spring.

I think we're making this a little more complicated than it will end up being. If campus is open or even partially open, and the Big Ten is playing lacrosse, then I suspect the Blue Jays will participate just like everyone else.

I talked to a JHU professor the other day as part of an alumni panel. She said students are pretty miserable with the virtual learning and that the school really wants to get kids back on campus in the spring.

I remember going to visit swarthmore and to be politically correct I thought of the place what john blutarski thought of the guitar and the losers on the staircase. We never even got out of the car, just kept going to penn. That statement is everything that's wrong with modern higher ed. "cross campus collaboration"-it's sports, dean wormer.

Athletics is 620 students. 13-15 percent of the undergrad student body and one that's exempt from the diversity, legacy and academic criteria the rest of the student body has to pass to gain admission. There is no "shutting it down", they might not play, but the coaches still have to recruit, prepare camps if they run them and help student athletes.

"Might be good for the new coach to be able to get his feet under him, before having to jump into a loaded B1G."-This is a ridiculous statement. Milliman isn't even coaching the players right now.

we've discussed the idea of the school not playing while the rest of the conference and rivals do and it would probably ruin the program and support for the school in general from alumni.

Many D3 athletics programs will not be open this spring if sports are cancelled. Expect furloughs and layoffs.

And JHU isnt really a B1G athletics program.

Coaches can continue to recruit and fundraise to justify their salaries. But what is the rest of the athletics staff doing when there are no sports? No compliance, no camps to prep/advertise for, no travel to plan, no ankles to wrap, no fields to set up, no statistics to keep, no press releases to write.

+1

The Big has lots of "credentialed" Presidents and Executive Faculty members (all very PC and research oriented). Also the Big has no big revenue producing sports in the Spring. So if the Big decides to play sports in the Spring, Hopkins as a member of the Big, will need to fall in line. Michigan, Northwestern, Illinois, Wisconsin, etc all have highly rated medical schools. Nothing that makes us the outlier exception there. Hop is just a member of the Big herd in this decision. If the Big votes to play. Hop will play. If the Big doesn't play, Hop will probably not play. Life will go on, but we will all be a little sadder and more depressed if there is no lacrosse, AND I am really curious (and hopeful) as to how the new coaches will perform. :)

The b1g has already said they're going ahead with winter and spring sports. You know if we play we're going to lose several guys to corona and so I fully expect if we play we'll see some lineups with some total randos like a dylan bauer.

Hop in 21 LFG and the band better be in the stands. Non Negotiable.

silver lining. if hop can't play, the b1g rpi might be better? helps for scheduling in 2022.

-cornell willis will buy that shirt. I wonder about the big fella. Haven't heard from the big guy much during these times. I just want to know if the cheerleaders are going to survive the sjw movement on campus.

-if we do return to play obviously that lockerroom is a problem, way too small for corona I wonder how the adjust.

If Bauer is our version of a total rando then we should be in decent shape. The kid is good.

Massive depth at attack. Lots of pieces for Junior & Milliman to work with.

Defense TBD.

-cheerleaders are essential. Kids love them.
-we have 15 defensive players on the roster, 16 attackmen and only one attack sr in cole graduating next spring. We're going to lose like 7-8 attackmen to transfers unless some are converted to midfield.

require rosters of 35, or less. I mean, at some point, that 6th year "senior" and former top top In$wag lacro$$e recruit, ain't seeing the field. evah.

If they play the season, do they open the stadium?
I mean at College Park and Annapolis you could open the whole stadium and fans could spread out, but at Homewood, not so much.
Maybe they enforce leaving open seats or something? You could set up a "Cordish Center bubble" or something for the players, but opening the stadium to fans involves a whole other level of risk, even with masks.

-If they play, I guess no. If the inn at the colonade has a terrace, or ballroom w/a view of the stadium that might work for parents. I've always thought it'd be cool for espn to do some shots of the stadium/campus/area from that appartment building on university parkway that overlooks homewood field.

all of this chatter about the BiG....the football money machine will be over.

Michigan is closing dorms for the spring, students told to 'stay home'. Only "essential" classes in person, which I gather are science classes with labs. No word yet on spring sports, but if campus all but closed.....
