What I meant was: American used to have a seat at the table when it came to rationally discussing things with China. We have, instead, provoked a Cold War, and are no longer listened to by the Chinese leadership when it comes to things like Taiwan. We are now in an adversarial position with China, is my point.

All China has to do is say "yes" to Trump's last tweet about not needing China...and guess what? Chicken Little was right all along....

After we recognized the PRC in '79, we could still control trade & influence their behavior, via annual renewal of MFN & restrictions like Jackson-Vanick. Once we agreed to their WTO entry, we lost the ability to effectively deter them from cheating & stealing. We gave up too much, too fast, without demanding that China reform to the same standards we have to maintain. We've enjoyed 3+ decades of an increasing volume of cheap Chinese goods, but look what we've given up in exchange. Corp profits soared, the working class suffered, the middle class stagnated & shrunk. ...imho, it wasn't worth it. We enabled their ascendancy, at our expense, without demanding that they liberalize & become an ally rather than an adversary. We fell short in helping Russia transition to a responsible global citizen as well, but we didn't enable the transfer of our national wealth to them, like we did with China. Biden says they're good guys. Right. We're seeing it now.

Not casting blame, but certainly may have something to do with all this China mess....it's often not what we see in plain sight.

Monday Morning Update: China willing to resolve trade dispute with U.S. via dialogue: newspaper

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese Vice Premier Liu He said on Monday that China is willing to resolve its trade dispute with the United States through calm negotiations and resolutely opposes the escalation of the conflict, a state-backed newspaper reported.

Liu, China’s top trade negotiator, was speaking at a tech conference in Chongqing in southwest China, the Chongqing Morning Post reported.

The comments come after U.S. President Donald Trump last week announced an extra 5% duty on some $550 billion of Chinese goods, the latest breast-for-tat move announced hours after China unveiled its retaliatory tariffs on $75 billion worth of U.S. products.
