Close to 40% of U.S. Households Say They Face Financial Difficulties as Covid-19 Pandemic Continues
More than 30% of people say their situation is worse, survey finds; 19% of households have depleted their savings

Financial hardship related to the Covid-19 pandemic continues for nearly 60% of households earning less than $50,000 a year, a recent survey found; a food pantry in Chelsea, Mass., in July.

Nearly 40% of U.S. households said they faced serious financial difficulties in recent months of the Covid-19 pandemic, citing problems such as paying utility bills or credit card debt, according to a recent poll. About one-fifth have depleted all of their savings.

U.S. households are struggling in many ways over a year into the coronavirus pandemic, according to the poll conducted by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and National Public Radio.

Nearly 60% of households earning less than $50,000 a year reported facing serious financial challenges in recent months. Of those, 30% lost all of their savings, according to the poll.

The survey questioned about 3,600 adults in August and early September about a variety of potential problems during the pandemic and how the effects have continued in more recent months. In addition to financial concerns, respondents were asked about healthcare, education, child care and personal safety.

The results show how the pandemic deepened an already divided economy in the U.S., with well-off people and businesses coming out the same or stronger while many lower-wage workers were thrust into financial crisis. The highly transmissible Delta variant slowed the U.S. economic recovery as businesses and consumers adjusted their plans. In late August, as the poll was being conducted, the Supreme Court lifted the federal government’s ban on evictions during the pandemic. Federal boosts to unemployment benefits expired in September, after the survey was completed.

Close to 20% of those polled said their financial situation is better now than before the Covid-19 outbreak, compared with 32% who said their situation is worse. About half, 49%, said it stayed the same.

The organizations conducting the survey expected fewer Americans to be experiencing these kinds of financial hardships, said Robert Blendon, co-director of the survey and emeritus professor of health policy and political analysis at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

“They are still caught in the middle of the impact of the Delta variant and Covid epidemic. It’s not over for them financially,” Dr. Blendon said.

“We’re in the middle of a period of real peoples’ lives where they’re still in a lifeboat worried about just getting to shore,” he added.

Those earning less than $50,000 are still in need of short-term assistance programs, he said.

Throughout the pandemic, the federal government sent Americans three rounds of stimulus checks based on income levels, with the last arriving in March. About 67% of those surveyed said they received financial assistance from federal and state governments through unemployment benefits, loans and stimulus payments. Of those who received assistance, 23% said it “helped a lot,” while 44% said it “helped a little,” according to the poll.

“While federal economic assistance has helped millions of families, short-term help is not enough to solve deeply entrenched inequities,” said Richard Besser, president and chief executive officer of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, in a statement.

Education was also a concern among respondents. Of those with children in grades K to 12, 69% said their children fell behind in school last year. Students fell behind in reading and math in the early months of remote learning, according to test scores recorded last year. Educators are now working to get students caught up, as many return to the classroom for in-person learning for the first time since the pandemic disrupted the nation’s more than 13,000 school districts.

Hey mdlax, did you happen to see Joe Rogan's interview with CNN's medical "expert" Sanjay Gupta today? It's long but worthwhile IMO. Of course you'll need to spend less time on TikTok to take it in.

Question. Is that the dude who said your immune system was good enough to stop COVID ( like Petey around here) but when he got it decided to throw everything at it under the sun, "kitchen sink" as I recall, including monoclonals, ivermectin, z-pack, prednisone, an NAD drip, a vitamin drip and more?

You boys really love those hollywood reality TV stars for some reason. Really f'in Weird.

Seems like face-saving spin designed for Gupta's standard CNN viewers. And he requested, wasn't invited to the interview... after all he was hawking his new book to Rogan's wide audience. Not sure there will be many takers based on his performance. Other than a rehash of the vaccine-for-all narrative, he left with more unanswered questions than any given answers.

Italy:

"Italy set a new bar on Friday for major Western democracies seeking to move beyond the pandemic by putting in place a sweeping law that requires the nation’s entire work force — public and private — to have government-issued health passes.

The measure requires workers to show proof of vaccination, a negative rapid swab test or recent recovery from Covid-19 before returning to offices, schools, hospitals or other work places.

Under the new rules, those who do not have a Green Pass, as Italy’s health pass is called, must take unpaid leave. Employers will be responsible for verifying the certificates, for the most part a cellphone app. Workers risk fines of up to 1,500 euros ($1,760) for not complying.

The law goes further than those in other European countries or the United States in pushing vaccination mandates, which have become central — and hotly contested — parts of government strategies to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

With the step, Italy — the first democracy to have quarantined towns and applied national lockdowns — is again first across a new threshold, making clear that it is willing to use the enormous leverage of the state to try to curb the pandemic and get its economy moving.

President Biden has appealed to private companies to mandate coronavirus vaccinations for employees, asking them to take initiative as an effort that he announced in September to require 80 million U.S. workers to get the shot undergoes a lengthy rule-making process.

China, where more than one billion people are now fully vaccinated, has no qualms about pushing a more forceful stance on vaccines. In August, the authorities in at least 12 Chinese cities warned residents that unvaccinated people could be punished if they are found to be responsible for spreading outbreaks.

Democratically elected governments, however, must balance public health needs with civil liberty concerns and political realities. For many Western governments, that has resulted in refraining from national mandates while seeking other ways to encourage, coax and even mildly coerce people to get vaccinated.

In Italy, where more than 80 percent of people over age 12 are now fully vaccinated against Covid, the sweeping national mandate has stirred protests among hard-core holdouts. Some workers, including at the a major port in Trieste, didn’t report for work on Friday.

But the measure has faced no serious legal challenge, and Prime Minister Mario Draghi and his government say they are confident that the courts will not delay or reverse the law.

Italy has now taken the boldest position in Europe. In France, President Emmanuel Macron has tried to make life uncomfortable for unvaccinated people, requiring a health pass to enter restaurants and for long-distance train travel, for instance, but has mandated vaccines only for some essential workers.

Italy earlier put in place tough requirements for health workers and teachers, significantly increasing vaccination rates in those categories. But to reach the most reluctant unvaccinated workers — an estimated 3.5 million people — the government has now taken one of the Western world’s hardest lines.

Government officials say that the measure is already working, and that more than 500,000 previously reluctant people — much higher than expected — have gotten inoculated since the government announced its plan last month.

Italians have largely embraced the Green Pass, as they have rules about wearing masks on public transit and other closed public spaces, as a small sacrifice for a return to normalcy. But a small population of eligible people remain unvaccinated — a mix of vaccine skeptics, conspiracy theorists and other anti-establishment types.

“There are still 50 deaths a day,” said Col. Mario Renna, a spokesman for the Italian Army general in charge of Italy’s vaccination effort. “We want to get to zero.”
