Sooo, how about Cortland winning the D3 title and Cortaca this year?

Well, I wasn't happy about them winning the Cortaca, but to be honest I felt IC had little chance once their qb qent down 2/3rds of the way into the season. But Cortland's QB was something special to watch. I always pull for upstate when push comes to shove - RIT for lacrosse, etc. So yes, even Cortland in the Stagg Bowl.

Except Syracuse, of course. Screw those guys...

See for lacrosse I go upstate except against Bart. But for football, maybe having played then all I can’t root for SUNY Gym Teacher U, lost respect for IC when they took Joe Germinerio a few years back, RPI cheats all day and night Iswrnia teaches them to hold and get away with it as well as cut block but hey you can look at athletes junk from the bottom of the pool underneath at ECAV which makes sense for them and Union just plain sucks a**-id fight then again if I could.

But when it comes to ACC/IVY titles or against some Mid Atlantic comp I’ll root for cuse and Cornell.

But it’s nice to break the Stranglehold tanga 4 schools had on the title for most of 25yrs (Mt Union, UMHB, North Central and U Wisc Whitewater but the last one doesn’t have their awesome coach who runs Kansas now.

Tom deserves induction as a player and as a contributor! The Cornell alum most overlooked now that Bob Shaw will be inducted is Craig Jaeger. Craig was a 5 time 1st team All America midfielder. Once in high school, twice at Nassau CC and twice at Cornell. He is inducted into the Cornell and Junior College Halls of Fame. Also the Long Island Metro Lacrosse Hall of Fame. A middie who took faceoffs and stayed on the field playing both ways. Just like Bob Shaw. Long overdue!

The arrival of the new year means Cornell Men's Lacrosse season is right around the Cornell!

The Big Red is slated seventh in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Top-20 preseason poll, the second straight year in the top-10 for Cornell

I can't argue with that. Jaeger was a great player and a great ambassador for the game in Australia. I wonder if it's a bit "out of sight, out of mind" since he's living in Australia.

I see that the Cornell - Notre Dame game has been scheduled to take place in Bethpage on LI.
Not a surprising venue (Long Island that is) - under Coach B, Cornell has continued it's tradition of recruiting well from LI...and I'm sure ND is more than willing to reinforce its presence with its St. Anthony's and Chaminade pipeline.

Game is at LIU University in Old Westbury, not Bethpage HS FYI. Still a nice venue, right down the street from me. Im probably going to attend this battle!

JoeM --- the Cornell Athletics website still references the HS Stadium in Bethpage as the game site.
Personally, I much prefer the bigger LIU venue, especially given that Notre Dame will be a big LI draw. I recall attending the Cornell - Notre Dame game at Hewlett HS in the mid-2000's (05, 06, or 07). It was an SRO crowd, lots of fans were turned away.

Roster Analysis: Cornell
As we look ahead to the upcoming season, the Cornell Big Red find themselves in a position of both promise and uncertainty. After a solid performance last year, the question on everyone's mind is whether this roster has the capability to not only replicate but also exceed last year's achievements.

Starting with the goalkeeping situation, there's no denying that the departure of Chayse Ierlan leaves a significant void between the pipes. Ierlan's contribution was immense, and his save percentage of 52.2% underscored his importance to the defense. With the return of Wyatt Knust and the addition of freshman Matthew Tully, the Big Red's goal will be defended by less experienced hands. Knust's limited exposure last season doesn't provide much in the way of reassurance, and Tully is an unknown quantity at the collegiate level. Nevertheless, it's worth noting that the team returns 79% of its defensive experience. This seasoned defense could very well provide the necessary support to ease the transition for the new goalie, mitigating some of the potential growing pains associated with this critical position.

On the faceoff front, Cornell stands on more solid ground. With 96% of their faceoff experience returning, including Jack Cascadden, the team has a foundation to build upon. Cascadden's 50.7% win rate, after adjusting the for the strength of the guys he went up against, left him ranked as the 31st best FOGO according to the faceoff Elo model. The proficiency of the faceoff unit, which was in the 63rd percentile nationally, indicates that while there's room for improvement, this is not an area of immediate concern.

The overall roster size for the Big Red is marginally above average with 57 players, five more than last season. This increase in numbers could offer more depth and flexibility in managing the long season, allowing fresh talent to emerge and providing more strategic options.

Offensively, the picture looks relatively bright with 84% of production returning. The loss of Billy Coyle, who was instrumental in initiating plays, does leave a question of who will fill his shoes. Coyle created 24% of the team's assists with a 65% percentile efficiency rating. Not insurmountable, but a heavy lift for whoever takes over his responsibilities within this system. However, the presence of key players like CJ Kirst and Michael Long, with their high individual efficiency ratings (84th and 96th percentiles respectively), implies that the offensive unit has the talent to potentially improve upon last year's performance. Hugh Kelleher's above-average efficiency suggests he's another player who could step up to increase the unit's effectiveness. They finished 2023 ranked in the 90th percentile nationally on an opponent-adjusted efficiency basis, so if they can replace Coyle, this unit has the potential to be a contender for best offense nationally.

So, does this roster suggest Cornell will be better or worse than last year? The defensive experience bodes well for supporting a less experienced goalkeeper, which could be the team's most significant challenge. The consistency at the faceoff X and the depth on offense with returning players who have demonstrated high efficiency and impact give reason for cautious optimism. While it's clear that there are gaps to fill, particularly in goal and in replacing the playmaking prowess of Billy Coyle, the Big Red has a strong foundation from which to build. If the newcomers and less experienced players can rise to the occasion, Cornell certainly has the potential to compete for a championship. However, the answer will ultimately be determined on the field as the season progresses and these variables play out in real time. Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.
