Does a third place team in the Big10 with a 5-5 record deserve a bid to the NCAA, or even if they are 6-6 with a win and loss in Big10 Tournament?
Depends on who they’ve beaten. If they’ve got 3 wins over Maryland/OSU/Rutgers; why not? It’s not like the bubble is gonna be deep this year

How does that happen with a five game conference only schedule?
There’s 10 games. They just only released the first half of the schedule

xxxxxxx wrote: Fri Feb 26, 2021 2:42 pm I disagree and think the bubble will be very deep. ACC is another question, they have all five teams in the top 10 but probably 2 will end up with losing records, do they get in? It's going to be a tough sell to send teams with 500 and losing records to the tourney, but I won't be shocked to see it. Big opportunities for Patriot, CAA, and others to send multiple teams.
I'm pretty confident in saying the CAA is not going to send multiple teams in. Patriot, maybe.

Also it's not possible for a Big Ten team to finish 5-5 given everyone makes the conference tournament after the 10-game regular season.

The last place finisher in the ACC might face similar questions. Depending on their non-con schedule it's quite possible a Big Ten team with a record around .500 has a more impressive resume than whichever ACC team(s) gets only 0-2 conference wins.

Ok but so you’re going to go run rest of the table in conference and go 1-4 out? 3-2 in conference and 2-3 out? Or is this a situation where 5-5 but then win the conference tourney and get in that way at 7-5. Though I thought we were talking at large not AQ.

That’s a good point.
In addition to the (likely) one extra at large from the Ivies,
another likely at large due to all B1G schedules and limited
ACC out of conference games,

will the NCAA though uphold the sub-500 “rule” ?

acc teams outside of nd have 6 to 8 ooc games. 2 teams are not likely to finish under .500.

CAA might not be a good example but we will see, you could have UMass Hofstra or Delaware with like 8 - 4 or 9-3 records, is that better than 6-6 in Big10 or 4-7 in ACC. Bg East maybe a better example with Denver Gtown. I actually see one or possibly 2 ACC teams get in with losing records and a Big10 at 6-6.

a .500 b1g team will have .500 opponents record, and .500 opp opp record. not to mention .500 record of their own.

while they may not be the exact middle team in rpi (32?), they will be somewhat close. inside one standard deviation? like no better than 27.

they are not getting in at .500 unless the committee flat out says to hell with it, they look good.

You know I’ve been saying it as loudly as I can in the Hopkins thread and no one wants to listen: you need at least 7 wins this year in the Big Ten to have any shot at an at-large berth.

Too too much, Terps just wore down that defense.

Terps very impressive! They look like a #1 to me.

Terps defense looks great. Not a ton of athletes on Penn State offensively. Kelly and Malone look like the only guys who can beat their man. God do they miss Ament! No action from x.

Btw Maryland hit 8 posts tonight. Could have been much worse for Penn State.

Nobody will touch MD in the Medium10 this year.

Penn State has got a load to carry.
Ohio State next.

They may want to re-think their set offense post
Ament plans, and just go full run and gun, there are
some other guys they can pull off the bench,
just got worn down by the relentless Terps.
Obviously they were rated too high to start the season,
but neither are they at the other end of the spectrum.

Are we sure it's Hopkins and Michigan alone at the bottom of the conference?

Penn State isn't the same team without Ament. They didn't look any better than the Jays did last week. It's obviously very early and things probably will change over the course of the season but right now it might be three tiers: UMD, then OSU and Rutgers, and then PSU, Hop, Mich grouped together.

Maryland played a poor first half, got dominated on FO's, and still won easily. Should scare everyone else.

I don’t agree. There are four tiers:

First tier: Maryland
Second tier: Ohio State
Third tier: Rutgers, Hopkins, Penn State
Fourth tier: Michigan (who stink)

Hopkins will be competitive against Rutgers and Penn State. They minimally split with those two teams.

meh. thought psu looked a lot better than 1st half hopkins. too early to tell whether 2nd half hopkins was "game was over" or the 1st half was 1st game jitters or it was all something else.

psu wasn't going to win, but it was a 3 goal game before 2 blown calls helped blow it open in the 4th. michigan was down to umd like 15-3 at that point.

the good news is they get to play each other 4 times each to find out.

Not a bad assessment. Looking forward to Saturday. MD really impressed!

PSU never looked good at any point. It was only close bc Maryland was playing their worst game basically. Once Maryland stopped turning it over unforced and weren't throwing balls over their heads and got some fluidity going they got whatever they wanted. And dominated PSU's offense.
