Just an coincidence that the outbreak was in Wuhan, of all places.
The Chinese have been totally transparent since the outbreak,
shame on Trump for cutting NIH funding to their smokescreen.

have to say, the lab leak doesn't interest me nearly as much as a bat soup, wet market, bat jump. but i'm pretty agnostic anyway.
however... the dialogue fascinates me on either side. firing up as to the certainty of science on one side and the other.
especially not long after the anniversary of "masks". great stuff, boys.

What would MDLF76, Rachel Maddow & you be saying if the outbreak was in Fredrick, MD ?
I suppose the alternative theory is that it was "developed" in a bat or another mammal which was then bat-bitten or ate the bat, then was "released" when it jumped to humans when the mammal was slaughtered in the wet market. What are your family members & other expert friends telling you.
Too bad that telegenic Georgetown prof you linked lost her NIH research grant.
Enjoy your bat soup. Thanks for elevating the discussion.

Guy too proud to say... “I should have used the word if”
“we need to determine, with greater certainty, how it developed & was released, rather than dismiss the question for political reasons.”
“If” is a powerful little word. He didn’t really need to insert “with greater certainty”. He decided to add that. Take that out and his point is the same. Throwing chum for his acolytes isn’t an accident.

"...condescending to the Holiday Inn Express staff"...old salt wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 10:39 pmI did not claim to be an expert. You challenged my basis to have an opinion. I am not a neophyte in the field. I've been trained, had to study the issue, prepare for it & be accountable. I regarded this threat a greater potential threat than the N & C threat components of my job description. That's probably why i am so risk averse on the issue. Whether intended or not -- COVID 19 is a potent bio weapon which we need to determine, with greater certainty, how it developed & was released, rather than dismiss the question for political reasons. I hope you are less condescending to the Holiday Inn Express staff.MDlaxfan76 wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 10:24 pm"gain of function" research...I'm from Missouri that you were trained in that area of science, its benefits and risks. Of course it should be "considered".
But it shouldn't be assumed, nor be a political bludgeon.
What I do think should be "assumed" is that because there's at least such a possibility, safety protocols should be a priority. How do we better ensure that any labs involved are super safe?
No matter the rationale, it still can be used as a bio-weapon.
The same result if there is an accidental release.
The benefit does not justify the risk or the potential for misuse.
It's just too much of a coincidence that the outbreak was in Wuhan.
I don't agree re the research, but I'd note that neither of us is an expert in this field.
One of my jobs was to prepare our base for NBC defense, how to react to attacks, triage, treat & decontaminate.,
I have a couple of decades of VC background in the biotech space, but I'm not claiming that I'm an "expert" on the next biotech breakthrough. On the other hand, I do have some perspective on why it's so valuable to do basic research, pushing the frontiers of what we understand.
Come on Salty, I have no issue with you having an opinion. Stop being so prickly.
But you are not an expert on what type of research is too dangerous and what is not, nor an expert in the benefits of doing such research...nor am I.
And I also acknowledge that your "risk adverse" perspective has solid basis and merit.
It just doesn't make you right.
I've explained why I have a different perspective. Doesn't make me right either. But it too has solid basis and merit. Just different from yours.
Which is why I go to thinking about the process of what to do going forward, I think more realistically than you.
BTW, I also mentioned FT. Dietrich, to which you did not respond.
I'd mentioned that location in an exchange last year when I "challenged" the notion that if another country, especially one we consider a geopolitical rival, accused us of releasing a bio-weapon into the public and demanded that we open up our actual bio-weapon research to their scrutiny we'd actually do so. Indeed, they'd get the opposite reaction.
And here we have a lab that is at least ostensibly intended for protection from pandemics, not bio-weapon development....and what do we do? We pull our scientists, losing oversight.
We agree on the risk, we simply don't agree on what to do about it.
