Suppose it’s a little different at the graduate level and all walls have broken down in the social media era but I never understood why higher ed professionals were so free to interject their politics int whir work compared with most of the employed universe in this country where until the last 5-10yrs it wasn’t really discussed at work as much.

Thanks…..Old Youth wants to pretend that that guy isn’t like the rest of them because he doesn’t believe the civil war had anything to do with slavery…..slavery had nothing to do the civil war…..Just folks being PC. My great great grandfather fought in that war and lived to tell about it BTW.

Yup, all inextricably intertwined... I certainly suspect that he was not saying that slavery wasn't a big factor in the Civil War. Just a matter of whether you put the empPHAsis on the economics or on the morality as why folks were fighting. One could make either argument and not be saying what the Lost Cause folks want to teach instead. And have been teaching for years in many cases.

The draft riots in NYC were predominately started by dock workers and longshoreman worried the free black men would flow into NYC and do their job on the cheap. These were Yankees concerned about themselves. The emancipation proclamation was a threat to them. They may have been NY Yankees but they really were not concerned about freeing the slaves. I bet that little part of civil war history was not taught when you learned about the civil war. It was never mentioned when I was in HS. I first heard about why those draft riots were a big deal years ago on a PBS special.

My wife’s grandparents still literally call it “the northern aggression” with a straight face. But they seem to be more sore losers than (overt, intentional-most people carry at least a sliver of it unconsciously) racists
