Canada warns LGBTQ residents of the risks of traveling to the US due to some state laws

Not seeing where that's embarrassing, US gets a "take normal security precautions" rating.
LGBT demographics of the United States
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_demographics_of...
In February 2022 a Gallup poll reported that 7.1% of US adults identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.
Monstrous progress made in gay (and the rest) acceptance and equality in the past couple of decades, still a very long way to go though. According to this, 93% of the population is heterosexual, many of those see gay (and all the rest) life as sin, that aint gonna change. Come to the US and march/dance in the Pride parade, just think twice before attending LDS services in Salt Lake City.

"monstrous"? ;) probably not what you meant.

While you're right that the US overall gets a green, I see that there are regional warnings though I haven't found what they exactly are. Maybe CU88a can find those referenced?

Not sure I agree that "many" of the 93% of heterosexual will always see "sin" in that way, or that the "many" will remain a high enough proportion that laws will reflect antipathy in the US, even if only regional or at the state level. But we're not there yet...and there's currently a backlash that is indeed actually dangerous.

Don't see monstrous as being so wrong....huge progress has been made.
I think there's more (bigly more) acceptance and understanding today
than there ever has been.
I doubt you ever change the born again good Christians' attitude/acceptance
of gays (and all the rest), whether that amounts to many is debatable, I suppose.
7% is quite a minority (despite what one might be led to believe by the non stop
bombardment of gay and trans news put in front of us daily), and while I do believe
that the majority of the 93% are indifferent regarding gays, there are always going
to be pockets where they're not welcome, IMO. Unless your mission is to be a martyr
avoid those areas. Just a fact of life better dealt with wisely (there are areas you
wouldn't wander into because of your difference too).
Am guessing you're feeling better, glad to see that.

I'm not sure how this is relevant in the context of LGBTQ. I do know that traveling back into the US from Canada can be a miserable experience. My girlfriend and I went to Toronto to see the Phantom of the Opera. It was a great weekend and we had a ton of fun. The problem didn't start until we crossed over into the US of A. We must have looked like real trouble makers. We were directed to the garage on the side of the customs booth. They spent 3 hours digging through our car and letting the drug sniffing dogs do their thing. They found diddly jack chit and failing in their mission pizzed them off to end. We didn't even get a " have a good day" :D I did give them a one fingered salute as we drove off.

This is a discussion that is a non sequitur and is stupid on many levels. The only groups that should be afraid of entering America are Catholics and Republicans. That is true especially if your entering NYS. 8-)

Yes, 7% here in US give or take, same in Canada. They have their Bible thumpers as well.

I'm not so sure there's a good explanation other than the general acceptance of hate currently present in our political system to explain why there's such a difference in acceptance levels there versus here. But one might argue there's been a longstanding acceptance of LGBTQ in Canada that resulted in things like same-sex marriage passed country-wide in 2005, way before our courts pushed it through. Note, our federal legislature did not.

By "pockets", it's one thing to have a church or mosque etc community be hostile to LGBTQ+ folks, it's another for state laws to be hostile, a majority of legislators in that state be hostile, even if the population majority might not be.

But maybe it's because folks think the "non stop bombardment of gay and trans news put in front of us daily" is coming from gay activists trying to make it seem as if there are more people in the minority being abused by the majority than there really are. Instead of seeing that most of the mentions of these issues are actually being driven in right wing media and police, with coverage in mainstream and left-wing media being mostly reactions to actual threats, actual hostile legislation.

Sometimes it's interesting to step outside of our media and political ecosystem to another country and look at us from afar...that list makes clear that there are many parts of the world that are super dangerous for LGBTQ+, many more hostile than most of the US, and yet, when looked at from a perspective of a neighbor like Canada, those hostile "pockets" here in the US are much, much larger than any such they have.

Don't blame me for the spelling error, that is an auto correct issue. I now need to double check my phone. The issue at the Canadian border has always been problematic coming into the US of A. It was several years ago we were tailgating at a Bills game. The folks next to us were Canadian Bills fans. It took them 3 hours to get over the bridge. The US Customs folks at that entry point have a well deserved reputation for being huge jerks. That hasn't changed much since 1993. There is no issue heading into Canada, they are not as anal retentive as their American counterparts.
You probably don't remember the outright hostility towards Republicans that exists in NYS. Then governor King Andy went as far as inviting all of them to leave his kingdom. The audacity of any opposition to disagree with the king. :D The dwindling # of Catholics in NYS has more to do with the Catholic Church trying to reinvent Catholism to appease critics. I don't know where these many devout Catholics disappeared to. Many have passed on or just became too disenfranchised from their church. You can always watch the mass for shut ins on Sunday and fulfill your obligation as a devout Catholic. The Catholic Church should try putting signs out side of church saying New and Improved. This ain't your parents Catholic Church anymore. :D

I tried my hardest on both my phone and pc to type facisious without it autocorrecting to facetious or at least getting a squiggly red line under it notifying me that doesn't spell anything, but maybe my devices don't know that spelling. While you're fixing your spell checker you might also want to make sure it's properly addressing contractions. I don't think I've ever seen "you're" in any of your texts when that's what's appropriate. But dispensing with the minor issue....

- I'm surprised that someone so concerned about illegal guns, undocumented aliens, and drugs coming from outside our borders would be so upset with our customs officers doing their jobs, whether that was yesterday or thirty years ago.

- Your last paragraph starts with the seeming inference that you were stopped because customs thought you were Republican and then goes into a bunch of stuff about the former NYS governor and the Catholic church. Was all that stuff meant to be in this thread or were those diatribes meant for somewhere else? I'm failing to see the connections of those comments with this topic.

is that fascist or fascistic or...facetious... ;)

Perhaps I should have used a wink emoji.
But interesting that your reference point on the Canadian border is back in the dark ages...as in pre Mrs. Cradle.
We never had a problem crossing the boarder.
It is always hit or miss. We normally cross at the Rainbow bridge. One bad experience is all it will take. The last time we went into Canada was to gamble and see a show from The Fabulous Cintas. My neighbor was doing the driving. Upon crossing back into the US of A fate struck us yet again. My neighbor had the EXACT SAME name as some felon wanted nation wide. The agents all became nervous and jerky fumbling around their weapons. It took a few anxious minutes for the agents to realize there was an almost 40 year age difference between my neighbor and the bad guy they were looking for. If your lucky enough to breeze through you should consider yourself lucky. They can make your day miserable.

This is a discussion that is a non sequitur and is stupid on many levels. The only groups that should be afraid of entering America are Catholics and Republicans. That is true especially if your entering NYS. 8-)

Is that how you refer to your wife, cradle?

The rest is indeed pretty darn stupid, especially how you wrapped it up. Ahh well. Happy Labor Day.

My phone changes words sometimes just as I'm posting them. I blame the people at Google. I don't think people smuggling weapons INTO the US of A FROM Canada is a huge issue. Smuggling drugs and fireworks is another story. The moral of my story that not surprisingly sailed right over your head was this. After an exhaustive 3 hour search of ourselves, our car and personal possessions they found nothing. The fact that not finding ANYTHING pizzed them off to no end. I guess they don't like to lose. They thought we were smuggling something. I understand they were doing their job. The fact they were obviously frustrated and angry at finding nothing sort of bothered me. I don't recall them even saying have a nice day. :D
I'm not surprised at you not understanding my remark about Catholics and Republicans. That involves the ability to think outside the box and understand a sarcastic comment. I'll leave footnotes for you in the future for clarification on your end.

Well good thing his name wasn’t Nasser…..he was a friend from graduate school he spent a weekend in jail over a similar circumstance. Police thought they had caught a terrorist.

For crying out loud I was being sarcastic!!! There was no actual connection outside of the fact Catholics and Republicans are becoming extinct in the State of New York. The once thriving Catholic population in my area in Upstate NY is decreasing more everyday. There are barely a small handful of Catholic schools and parishes in existence anymore. When I was young back in the 60s my parish of Holy Rosary had a mass at 8am, 10am and the Latin mass at 11:15. Holy Rosary went the way of the dinosaurs in mid 1990s. I don't see the dwindling population of Catholics as a problem that bothers anyone in particular. In reality it doesn't bother me either. It is the new reality of more and more people who describe themselves as recovering Catholics. Is this disconnection from the church and organized religion a good thing?

You mean when the area was thriving economically…..
Pretty much, the thriving economically ship sailed when Kodak, Xerox and B & L bailed out. They tore down a huge portion of the old KP buildings to save on property taxes. In their prime back in the mid 80s there were roughly 65 thousand employees. That has been whittled down to a few thousand today.
