Difficult first DII playoff game for Bernhardt.
A team they beat by only 1 TD, though you could argue
they controlled that game for the most part.
I don’t know how many of these games are on national TV,
though I suspect only the championship game.

Spencer. That’s a high level and he was more than competitive.
Just because Northwestern is in the B1G doesn't mean that they play at a high level. Clearly, they didn't at 8-23 on the season that year. They lost to Merrimack by 10 that year, and Merrimack was in its first year of transitioning from D2 to D1.

Being the 2nd best player on a really bad D1 team or being the best player on the...so far...top D2 team? Interesting philosophical question.
I am talking about the level of competition. Not the level of the team. Pat Spencer holding his own against high majors impresses me. Maryland could have used him.

Well, I don't agree with the 1/5 versus 1/22 thing: the quarterback is quarterback, The Main Dude, like being a pitcher in baseball who gets to pitch every inning of every game. On the other hand, Spencer couldn't control how good or bad his teammates were, basketball players all play offense and defense, and well D1 is D1, and the Big 10 is the the Big 10, no matter that it has more than ten teams now (14?). HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I'll take the dude who played 30 minutes a game in the Big Ten and averaged 10, 4, and 4 on 44% shooting. The talent differentials between D2 and high-major D1 for both football and basketball are gigantic.

Absolutely agree about talent differential. It's why a lacrosse player who hadn't played football in 5 years could immediately step in and be in the discussion for POY in D2 football. He's a legitimate D1 athlete.

Makes me wonder if GT, GA Southern, or some other D1 football program still ran the option that Jared would have ended up there. I think the service academies are the only remaining programs that run the option.

At the start of the season, everyone knew MD's football team had a weak spot at the RB position. Don't exactly know if Jared would have helped there, or if anyone knew the Terps would be that bad at the RB spot. Until last week, a walk-on RB had become their starter until he got hurt.

I remember going to see my high school teammate playing Big Ten football. Dude was huge. He asked me to wait for him outside the practice gates. I waited. Saw the team walk out I didn’t think the players were that big. A little guy took his helmet off…..it was my buddy. 6’1 - 225 pound running back.

Especially these days because you have to block for pass intensive play of major college football and pros. Folks can be dismissive of the team nature of football but just because the QB gets all the glory they’re only as good as their teammates. Evidenced by the game he was out.

Also for D2 and D3 the gap between the top handful of teams and rest each year is huge. You see a lot of blowouts at the quarters and semis.

My teammate was selected to the College Football Hall of Fame.

Man, this is no spring sport in Maryland. Basically blizzard conditions. Snowing hard with blowing winds. Very exciting game, tied at this point.
