Do you have to be on a top tier team to make this All-NESCAC list? Are there no good players on the lower ranked teams? I get it - the top ranked teams are top ranked because they have good players... but I saw some defensive players shut down those top players this year and they are not mentioned.
I watched that goalie from Conn College play some seriously great games... and he did not have a great defense in front of him.
Having watched Bowdoin - prob the most entertaining team to watch - were they the best players or the best team? I would argue that they were a complete team and played so cohesively that they were outstanding.
Who votes for it? I presume its the coaches who had to do the scouting all year? Not saying that these players do not deserve it - they are all damn good - just saying there is a small sub-set of teams represented here.

Thirded - it's unfortunate that Barnard and Woods had such strong seasons in the same year that Bowdoin popped under Mason, but Bill hit this one out of the park.InsiderRoll wrote: ↑Thu May 05, 2022 10:37 amI would agree. There are certainly a few coaches that hs good years. Barnard and Woods come to mind, but Mason has had a monster year with a team that hasn’t been successful at a high level in some time.low2low wrote: ↑Thu May 05, 2022 10:20 amAgree with most of this but think that Mason is a lock for COY. Bowdoin lacrosse has never been this good. In his first year as Head Coach, he literally broke program records. What more could he have possibly done to earn this accolade? I guess he could have led Bowdoin to a win over Tufts to go undefeated but he wasn't even at the game due to covid! Woods did an amazing job following a lot of turmoil at Amherst but that program was well established under Thompson and attracted top recruits who are still on the team. Bowdoin came out of nowhere. I could go on but of all the "of the year" accolades, I think Mason being COY isn't even up for debate.

Usually yes. Once in a while a player that proved exceptional on a bad team sneaks in, but most years it is the top teams taking all spots.Do you have to be on a top tier team to make this All-NESCAC list?
Agree. As much as every fiber in my body wants Barnard to get it after finally having a good season. But, Bill and Bowdoin blew it up.Thirded - it's unfortunate that Barnard and Woods had such strong seasons in the same year that Bowdoin popped under Mason, but Bill hit this one out of the park.

Senior Donal Mullane was voted as the NESCAC Player of the Year, sophomore Will Byrne was selected as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year, and Bowdoin head coach Bill Mason was named the NESCAC Coach of the Year by his peers.
Mullane is the second Polar Bear to garner the NESCAC Player of the honor and also earned a spot on the All-NESCAC First Team. He has 94 points on 54 goals and 40 assists in 13 games. Mullane is averaging 4.15 goals, 3.08 assists, and 7.23 points per game to lead the NESCAC in all three categories and has contributed at least five points in every game he has played this season.
Byrne, who was named to the All-NESCAC Second Team, is the second NESCAC Rookie of the Year recipient in the Bowdoin program. Byrne ranks second among the Polar Bears’ offensive leaders with 72 points on 46 goals and 26 helpers. He has recorded a hat trick in nine games this season.
Mason, who is in his first season at the helm of the Bowdoin program, becomes the third Polar Bear coach to garner the NESCAC Coach of the Year honor. Mason led Bowdoin to the best start in program history (14-0) and the second-seeded Polar Bears enter a NESCAC Semifinal matchup versus No. 3 Amherst with 15 wins, tying the program record for single-season victories set by the 1989 and 1990 squads.

Re: NESCAC
Yes, you do. There are many examples of legitimately deserving players being excluded from the list. It's a large conference, and they do not have an "honorable mention" team. Can be frustrating for those types who are exceptional players on sub-par teams.UpperCorner wrote: ↑Thu May 05, 2022 11:46 am Do you have to be on a top tier team to make this All-NESCAC list?

It's voted on by the coaches.
Re: NESCAC
2013. NESCAC POY was Ian Deveau, of Colby. He has been the NESCAC ROY in 2009, and All-NESCAC all the way through. Four years.
Colby was last in the NESCAC in 2013.
Another serious POY candidate on some middling Colby teams was Craig Bunker, who if the award was M Valuable, probably would have run away with it. There was no more valuable player to his team. DIII AA for three years, DIII Specialty POY {FOGO}. Bunker won something like 71-72% of his draws that year. Close the year before. Dominant.
Well recognized despite the team’s record. During Bunker’s time, including the JT years, Colby was better…relatively speaking.
From what I heard…via a few NESCAC coach friends, those two were SO dominant that you could not look past them.
But, Bunker was not the POY. JT in private would say it night have been a defacto vote against HIM. Youngest NESCAC coach could rub some the wrong way back then.
So it has happened. Will it again? Who knows?

Re: NESCAC
Here's the breakdown of the 2022 teams, ordered by # of players on the All-NESCAC teams:
Conf. Standings - Team - Total (1st Team/2nd Team)
#2 Bowdoin - 6 (3/3)
#1 Tufts - 4 (3/1)
#4 Wesleyan - 4 (2/2)
#7 Hamilton - 4 (2/2)
#3 Amherst - 4 (0/4)
#5 Middlebury - 2 (1/1)
#6 Williams - 1 (1/0)
#8 Conn. - 1 (1/0)
#9 Colby - 1 (0/1)
#10 Trinity - 0
#11 Bates - 0
I will be the first to say that I think there have been some indefensible All-NESCAC selections/omissions at points over the last 5-6 years. However, it does feel like this year is at least somewhat balanced. Out of curiosity, who from one of the conference's bottom teams deserves to be All-NESCAC that wasn't, and who on either of the All-NESCAC teams would get bumped? Just from looking at the stats pages (incomplete way to do it, I know) I'm having a hard time finding any major snubs. Interested to see if anyone has particular players in mind.

Re: NESCAC
He was injured for the last couple games, but Parker Merrill, if memory serves, was leading the conference in faceoff win % at one point in time. I'm surprised he wasn't a second teamer.
I drive a Dodge Stratus.
Re: NESCAC
Yeah that's a weird one, good call. Best in-conference numbers (virtual tie with Barnard; .612 to .611), third overall behind Barnard and the Wesleyan duo/trio. Wonder if it's a volume/availability thing, he took a lot fewer faceoffs than either Barnard or Kopp. Barnard 432/Kopp 400/Merrill 315.

Delay of game call with less than one minute left in a one-goal game? Let em play, refs!

Re: NESCAC
Have no affiliation to either team or NESCAC. Watched the video to see what happen. Ball goes out of bounds, ref let the Bowdoin player start 5 to 10 yards forward where the ball went out of bounds. You can't quick restart that far forward. It was the correct call on the delay of game, except the ball should have never started there. If you think that was fair you were routing for Bowdoin.laxdad420420 wrote: ↑Sat May 07, 2022 8:47 pmWesleyan Parent here - Was at the game. The Amherst player did not give 5 yards at the whistle (or remotely close to it, was maybe half a yard) and then proceeded to jack the player the second the whistle was blown. No one to blame but the undisciplined play of Amherst. Not just the correct call, but a great one. Unfortunate for my boys though earlier in the day… Go beat tuftsnescac commit wrote: ↑Sat May 07, 2022 7:07 pmWhen the refs have to be police escorted out after a lacrosse game, you know they f*cked up
Re: NESCAC
Not sure it’s possible to watch the video and arrive at any conclusion. The entire play happens off-screen. It’s at the 2:17:25 mark in the video here. The camera work was a joke.
Re: NESCAC
I know Tufts is a very good team...but I see Bowdin as a very overrated team. NESCAC is a tough conference, and they beat everyone but Tufts... but I guess I see Tufts play them, they just make them look very average. They have no real out of conference games against the top 15 teams to see how they stack up as well. They are young and will be scary in the next few years though.

Re: NESCAC
Tufts looked strong today. Should be a good tournament where the NY state teams will prove challenging, but clearly Tufts is the team to beat in New England.

It’s no wonder we have a ref shortage.
