Hopkins Impresses vs. Marquette and Richmond
After topping Marquette 10-4 in a three quarter scrimmage earlier on Saturday, Johns Hopkins then built a 9-4 first half lead vs. Richmond. While jersey numbers were switched, making it hard to have many takeaways on individuals, the Blue Jays have looked incredibly physical, energetic and stout on defense.

Playing mostly back-ups, Richmond won the final quarter 7-0 against Hopkins to unofficially win 11-9. The Spiders’ Ryan Lanchbury (Honorable Mention All-American with 52 goals and 20 assists last year) did not dress.

Hopkins’ was really impressive in their first scrimmage, playing without sophomore attackman and returning leading scorer Joey Epstein — though that may not the worst thing for the time being. Freshmen Owen Murphy and Jacob Angelus looked good, especially in the second scrimmage, while middie Evan Zinn had three goals vs. Marquette.

The Blue Jays’ goalie battle seems tight: lefty Jacob Giacalone and 2019 starter Ryan Darby were both solid. Clearing, riding and face-offs were also strong points for the Blue Jays.

As for Marquette, the Golden Eagles are young, with some excellent freshmen and sophomores, but they will be tough in the Big East.

this is good news for hopkins, getting contributions from freshmen, as well as their "next man up" mentality showed so far in their scrimmage. Meanwhile Loyola had an iffy scrimmage against UMBC. This game between the two will be very very tight. Can't wait to see what happens in only a couple weeks

What game was Xander’s watching on goalie? The senior got pulled halfway through 2Q and replaced by Darby. In first game the only goalie who let in one goal and made outlet passes that created fast breaks was the sophomore goalie. If Petro goes with Darby out of loyalty it better be with a short leash. If not you can say bye bye to Petro and the season. The defense is young so it may be a long season but they looked like they held their own and the offense had its spurts.

I didn't watch the scrimmage but this language strikes me as a little odd. Feel free to correct me if this is wildly off base but I highly doubt Giacalone was "pulled" from the scrimmage in the traditional sense. Halfway through 2Q the other team had only, what, 2 goals? He couldn't have been playing that poorly. I'd caution against drawing any sort of conclusion as to *when* a substitution is made in a preseason scrimmage.

If I go to Villanova I will report back on the goalie situation—it may be more of a legit dress rehearsal than what you saw against Marquette/Richmond.

Sorry I just wasn't paying attention, It was 7-2 midway through the 2nd quarter and then Richmond did put in 2 quick ones so Giacalone could have allowed 4. Still your point is valid - it wasn't like he played horribly and it wasn't like Darby came in and stood on his head. The substitution could have been pre planned. But I was engaged in a very important game of tug of war and my opponent was young and strong. Again, my overall summary of goalie play was OK. While 8 goals in 5 quarters sounds really good - they didn't face alot of shots and were not required to make a ton of saves. Gainey's outlet passes were terrific. 50 yard bullets right on an attackman's stick.

Agree with the "50 yard" passes on the mark. I have always thought we need to push transition and create more unsettled opportunities--even if it results in turnovers. Maybe Petro & staff will follow the "run off a save" mindset and let the ssdm's take some chances? We have seemed to get bogged down offensively the last several years, with not Rabil or Harrison to bail us out by taking the ball to the rack..

I'm going to have to disagree 100% here. High food drive and eagerness to please give them a knucklehead reputation but clearly they have above average canine intelligence - especially as the main breed for Guiding Eyes of the Blind and other service/therapy work, bomb sniffing and police work and even general duties like hunting. Labradors - while obviously not in the Newfoundland's league on this issue - also can serve as water rescue animals. They can do so much more then just chase a ball for hours. I have had 95 lbs of chocolate crazy for almost the last 11 years and he is anything but stupid. Also on the Dog Whisperer's Top 10 for Canine intellect.

It is mostly tongue-in-cheek. I've always had Labs and they are the best. I say they are dumb, but maybe a better word is mine were broken. The 3 labs I've had played fetch for about 5 throws and after the 5th throw, they would stop and then give me a look saying "hey dumb human, you've thrown that thing 5 times, I'm not getting it for you anymore. Go get your own ball."
