Anyway - usually agree with your posts all the way but can't here - John DeTomasso was one of the ALL TIME greats - his battles with Tim Nelson were terrific lacrosse theater - some of best 1v1 - still hear ol Leif Elsmo - "mano a mano"

Call me pedantic(I am a JHU alum)but "mano a mano" in Spanish means hand to hand. Why do people think adding an "O" to an English word makes it Spanish. Man is hombre. Man to man is hombre a hombre. Probably more appropriate to lacrosse would be palo a palo or, roughly stick to stick.

Just to be clear - while I never learned Spanish and did not know of the distinction you bring up - mano a mano was not my term - if you listen to the youtube clip on the '84 game the announcer says mano a mano about 3 times. My apologies to Leif (it was not him) - though I seem to recall on my VCR tape he said it plenty during the '85 game.
10stone5 wrote: Fri Jun 26, 2020 2:23 pm That is my recollection, from that championship game, I believe the Terps were favored in that game because of Boniello and that great offense.

If the Terps were favored it was probably because the game was at then named Byrd. Hopkins had defeated Maryland 14-13 a few weeks before at same said venue. IIRC - Terps led 4-3 after Kimball scored BTB and the place was going bananas (no pun intended) next time before Maryland scored I believe the scoreboard read something like 11-4 - one of the most dominant defensive performances. AND that was without allowing Ned to go to the face-off X

The unintended consequence of the Radebaugh Rule was that, after every Hopkins goal, the Terps faced six settled poles.

That would make sense.
Anybody that bothered to venture into the
crease got hammered that game.

I think another point, it simply wasn’t clear until after that game or maybe even into the next season, how great those teams actually were. By the 1980 game, it was almost a shocker that game was even that close. It got to the point where you expected Hopkins to win every year.

I meant no disrespect to you or the many who unknowingly us it as meaning man to man. It will probably continue to be used incorrectly. I merely wanted to point out that to anyone who understands Spanish its misuse is both painful and absurd.

Explain a situation in lacrosse where hand-to-hand combat is an appropriate term.

Yes. It's a well worn idiom (or if you really want to let it all hang out, grammatically---- it's a synecdoche) for hand to hand combat. Elsmo was using the term correctly....it's literally in the dictionary.

a fight or contest, especially one between two people

Explain a situation in lacrosse where hand-to-hand combat is an appropriate term.
It has more to do with sports announcing, and color commentating in particular.

See: drawing an analogy.

I don't have a problem with war/fighting terms in sports, I do have a problem when I hear constantly about lacrosse players and a "blue collar work ethic", because nothing says blue collar work ethic like THIS sport. Morehouse canceled its football season. I saw bowdoin shut down fall sports as well. Be interesting if Hopkins makes changes to how fall classes are taught. Lacrosse has to be on campus.

"Invented", no, but first guy to be nationally recognized as truly special in that emerging/evolving role, an offensive weapon.

To do an SAT-type analogy, Steve Mitchell is to lsm as Lawrence Taylor is to olb. The position existed before they played it, but they so refined it as to define it for future players of their respective positions.

Hopkins is the states largest employer, has hundreds of communications people to tell stories about everything they do and goes totally radio silent on their most popular homewood program (mens lacrosse) all year except for game days and game notes days. They have 2 twitter feeds about the mens program that tweet different things and one hasn't worked since last year. They're living in 2001. They're convinced the way to engage alumni is by calling to ask for $ 2x a month from the 410 student calls and a video program about some founder of the school. If the m lax isn't going to win games or play they might as well find people to tell us especially now about the past. People would watch a story about pellegrinos 2 super bowl wins with the patriots and how bb's relationship w/jhu built that connection. Imagine notre dame.edu or bama.edu only mentioning the football program on saturdays in the fall and a sheet w/projected starters on a wednesday. Goofy.
