Quoting from the article:
In Physics of Fluids, by AIP Publishing, researchers tested how five different types of mask materials impacted the spread of droplets that carry the coronavirus when we cough or sneeze.

Every material tested dramatically reduced the number of droplets that were spread. But at distances of less than 6 feet, enough droplets to potentially cause illness still made it through several of the materials.

“A mask definitely helps, but if the people are very close to each other, there is still a chance of spreading or contracting the virus,” said Krishna Kota, an associate professor at New Mexico State University and one of the article’s authors. “It’s not just masks that will help. It’s both the masks and distancing.”

At the university, researchers built a machine that uses an air generator to mimic human coughs and sneezes. The generator was used to blow tiny liquid particles, like the airborne droplets of sneezes and coughs, through laser sheets in an airtight square tube with a camera.

They blocked the flow of the droplets in the tube with five different types of mask materials — a regular cloth mask, a two-layer cloth mask, a wet two-layer cloth mask, a surgical mask, and a medical-grade N-95 mask.

Each of the masks captured the vast majority of droplets, ranging from the regular cloth mask, which allowed about 3.6% of the droplets to go through, to the N-95 mask, which statistically stopped 100% of the droplets. But at distances of less than 6 feet, even those small percentages of droplets can be enough to get someone sick, especially if a person with COVID-19 sneezes or coughs multiple times.
Sure, some droplets can still get by the mask, but to say that a 96%+ reduction in the number of infectious droplets is unimportant strikes me as completely ludicrous.

You're badly misinterpreting that report, which the CDC has clarified numerous times because Facebook crazies and Alex Berenson followers have some difficulty with facts. Apparently it's too burdensome to wear a small piece of cloth on their faces when they leave the house and everything is a conspiracy:

https://twitter.com/CDCgov/status/1316483997061517314
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/fac ... 643312001/
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/fac ... 119819002/

The CDC specifically recommends universal mask wearing in indoor places outside of the home:

https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/5 ... ot-at-home
https://www.npr.org/sections/health-sho ... c-stresses

There is overwhelming evidence from the CDC and other public health agencies in both the US and around the world that wearing masks helps to prevent the spread of the virus. It is not a cure, it is not 100% effective, but it helps. If you have trouble reading then just use common sense. If you have Covid, which we know is spread through respiratory droplets, a mask blocks a lot of those infected droplets from reaching other people when you talk, cough, or sneeze. Hope that helps.

Haven't heard back from the Hopkins people, regarding the graph.

Unless the rolling data/average is just a made up number? Otherwize, they would have an accurate daily death count, certainly, this Johns Hopkins welfare program is talking to the other covid Johns Hopkins white collare welfare WORLDOmeter........and the graphs can easily be blown up into daily death counts....and then reduced, to get the pretty picture rollercoaster ride. ....what?

the daily numbers on the world O meter stat border, the basics, don't even match up. Daily death counts. Bizarre. I paid tRump to take for stats for me........so I can't grasp these data holes.

guess it doesn't bother you that your online banking balance is different than what it says on the strip of paper........tRump is gone and that IS all that matters.

The U.S. has vaccinated just 1 million people out of a goal of 20 million for December

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/12/23/covid-v ... idappshare

it's altogether possible this could be rough getting off the ground. would be interested to see where other countries are over the next month. and what the lag in reporting turns out to be.

fwiw, i know 2 people in separate states that have been given specifics, including what their date of vaxx is, one out to feb 1. so there is some coordination and planning.

CDC, at this point, isn't counting Moderna vaxx's. Having a problem finding information on the Federal govt's "goal" of 20 million injected? Certainly no links in your link. There was a link to the cdc, hence, I learned that they are not counting the other vaxx.

Heck, the bigger concern, IS that they haven't even shipped 10 million Pfeizer vaxx's. Make sense that they can't meet this goal. If, it even exists.

https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#vaccinations

administered doses are for Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine only at this time.

I read the report just fine thank you.

154 positive case studies (out of 160) and they said “always wore a mask prior to testing positive”

You respond to my post with articles from NPR and USAToday, etc - LOL.

Produce an ACTUAL PEER REVIEWED STUDY that shows masks work. Not a recommendation from some cr@ppy Holiday Inn newspaper.

I have worn the mask for months now, as has everyone in Mass. Our numbers are through the roof.

I think it’s totally reasonable, at this point, to start questioning the guidelines being pushed down from our “leaders”.

Thanks.

Did you look at the graph before you added your comment?
What do the vertical numbers indicate in the graph?

The fine "print" is saying a "rolling 7 day avg", does this mean that , on avg. on the HIGH end, that 7 or 8 US citizens have been dying, per day, since March 1st ?

300 days, roughly the number of days since this graph/data began, multiplied by 8 (avg. daily #, rolling ) per million............let's call it 250 per day

250 X 300 = ????????????????????????????????????????//

My Iphone calculator comes up with 75K, or about 7500, dying, due to covid, per month. Do I have this write, based on the graph and ONLY the graph?

Where are all the other covid deaths coming from? Certainly not showing up on this graph. Unless I am reading it wrong. Any help would be appreciated.
I think that scale may be per million...the US is over 600 daily new cases per million population. We're running close to 200,000 new cases a day on 338 million pop.

We're running above 2,600 deaths per day, 7.88 per million. Germany is currently running right behind us on a per million basis.

Correction, we're currently at 2,781 per day trailing 7 days avg deaths.
abv/rrr...did you miss the explanation of the graph scale right after you asked?

My numbers are from worldometer which is typically a day ahead of Hopkins' reporting but tracks very closely with theirs.

As to the daily average, they both do it on a 7 day trailing basis. Gives a better sense of trend than the 3 day or 1 day because the weekend reporting tends to be low as some states don't collect all the data on the weekend, those #'s get caught up during the week so the 7 day provides a good sense of the trend line.

In one of your efforts to do the math, you multiplied by 32 instead of 320...others have pointed that out.

there actually are a lot of peer reviewed studies that show they work. usually in a one dimensional sense (like say a lab or a policy that isn't tracked on the ground) and also often with other flaws that haven't painted a comprehensive picture for actual covid spread. or studies that have confounding factors or other opposing observable or study results. many randomized clinical trials are understandably not only tough to come by, but likely won't ever happen en masse.

I would think the answer is almost certainly yes, given that "Other countries such as Denmark, the Netherlands and Australia have reported cases of the new variant."
