NCAA LAX TOP 20

1. Notre Dame - ball movement like you dream about
2. UVA - top end talent and physicality
3. Duke - honestly haven’t watched a ton of them, but the resume speaks for itself
4. Hopkins - appear to be back
5. Georgetown - not the same team that started 0-3
6. Cornell - could be higher but can’t get over the Harvard L
7. Penn State - don’t love the Nova & Marquette loses
8. Maryland - team feels bipolar, could beat #1 and lose to #20 on any given day

(Insert Gap here - I think the top 8 is fairly clear cut from the next 12)

9. Denver - another team I feel could put two very different performances up depending on the day
10. Penn - more losses than some behind them, but none of which feel too bad
11. Yale - good thing RPI doesn’t look at the scoreboard
12. Army - who have they beaten?
13. Nova - The GTown game should be very telling as to whether this team is the same one that beat Penn State to start the season
14. Rutgers - Don’t love any of the wins but don’t hate any of the losses
15. ‘Cuse - giving them some credit for the tough schedule and staying close in most games
16. Princeton - I want to put them at 15, but will give Cuse credit for the H2H win
17. Delaware - could be an upset pick in the first round off the AQ
18. UNC - pretty much here because of the Hopkins win
19. BU - Army will be the chance for them to make a statement heading into the Patriot League tourney
20. Michigan - 5/6 losses and 2 wins have come against teams listed above
Army beat Rutgers and lost to Cornell by 1 and held best player to 1 assist.
GT best win Denver
Denver best win Nova worst lost AF, and also just got by St Johns 0-13 by 2 goals.

I could quibble here and there, but the one thing I have serious issue with is Georgetown; they haven't played anyone of the caliber of the first 3 teams they played (and lost) to, and have struggled to put away some mediocre teams.

Last year going into the NCAAs I asked whether G'town might be overrated @ #2 based on the fact that they had one high-quality win on their resume. We may be looking at the same team (and same result?) this year.

Just my opinion - you can poke holes in any of the resumes. If you give Army credit for losing to Cornell by 1, you should do the same with Duke for Denver. Yes, AF is a bad loss for Denver, but so is UMASS for Army (though not as bad as AF). Denver struggled against a winless SJU team and Army beat a 1 win Colgate team by a goal. The point is that the teams in that area are very close and both have some good talent. I just think if they played tomorrow Denver wins it. Certainly wouldn’t shock me if it went the other way either.

That is understandable, and definitely one I could be reaching on. I just look at the top end talent there - Dordevic, Bowen, Reilly, Bundy etc. and think they could absolutely make a push. The big ND loss is concerning, but that’s part of the reason I have ND as my 1! I don’t think 1-2 goal losses to Hopkins and Penn give me the same pause as some that a few of the other teams right behind them have. Seems like most have them somewhere in the 7-9 range which I certainly don’t think is unreasonable either.

Georgetown is an interesting discussion. They had to replace 4 AA caliber players on the defensive side of the field, integrate 5 grad transfers, and replace a great offensive coordinator. And they had to develop depth at midfield and they front loaded the schedule with 2 top 5 and one top 10 teams. Then in the middle of the schedule they switched starting goalies for the second time this year. Yes there is very good talent but it has not been easy.

The upside is that they turned it around and won 8 straight including some close games, and go 10 deep with offensive guys who themselves are versatile. The Nova game tonight and BE tourney will are up next and if GU does well I think they are in a better spot for the tournament because of the challenges they will have overcome and the depth they have developed. GU ended last season looking flat but I don’t see that happening again.

Can’t argue with too much in there. I do believe Princeton is playing the best lacrosse of their season right now, and will beat Penn. The Terps also have to prove their mettle this coming weekend, otherwise 8th is about right for them.

Georgetown is probably the most interesting case study. They’ve won ten straight, after opening with three straight losses. Those losses were all to quality teams. Their wins have all been against likely non-tournament teams, barring AQs and Denver/Villanova. Seventh is probably fair, but we won’t really know what we’re getting with them until the NCAA’s.

^^Solid rankings here. I’m tempted to drop ND after seeing how ineffective their attack was yesterday.

Agreed. from my view, I just don't think anyone is better than ND. There is really is the top 3 (which rotate around beating each other) and then the next group of teams between 4 and about 10.

I find Hopkins over Penn State (both here, and in the media poll) to be somewhat interesting.

Similar records (11-4 v. 9-3). Hopkins has losses to Loyola and UNC; Penn State has losses to Villanova and Marquette. About a wash there. Hopkins lost to #2 UVA, PSU to #6 Maryland; again, nearly a wash. PSU won the head-to-head (yes, in 2OT, but a win's a win). Yes, Hopkins has the higher RPI, but I think it's close enough that I gave the nudge to PSU.

(It probably helps that I've seen Penn State play 4 times, and in three of those games they've blanked their opponent in the 4th quarter; their ability to shut down opponents at crunch time is impressive).

Good list although Vermont is a glaring omission. They are 9-4 with 3 top 20 RPI wins over Boston U, Utah, and Bryant. Swap them in and Delaware out.

Princeton is one of the 3 best teams Cornell has played this season. If they lose to Penn on Friday, they are out at 6-7 and ineligible for an at large bid. If Cornell gets past Yale, Penn or Princeton will be a tough out.
