Fall does not look good. Infections among tested pro & college athletes in training camps. South & SW are early starters b/c of the weather, and are the current hotspots. Florida early in the pandemic, avg age of positives >50yrs, currently ~35yrs. Growing hints (not hard evidence) that even asymptomatics have identifiable pulmonary disfunction (one study: akin to walking pneumonia) and that's for the lifestyle of the general population. Lung issues for athletes...

They are cutting $10M from the athletic department. They are cutting 4 teams as well as taking "other cost-cutting measures". Cutting teams is the headline, but the other cuts may be where most of the $10M in savings comes from.

I think more and more schools are going to go to a hybrid system - some students attending residential, some online. I imagine many double occupancy dorm rooms will be singles, in-person classes by mandate smaller, dining areas reduced or converted to grab-and-go. All equates to fewer students on campus. Next hammer I think falling is elimination of fall sports. Would be impossible to justify the close/physical contact, team workouts, etc. Can already see increased cases among football teams back at practice. Schools won’t risk a player or coach succumbing, or passing to some other member of the school who then succumbs. If those fall sports go away, particularly football, what happens next? Move to winter/spring and compete with those sports for venue space? Eliminate spring non-revenue sports in favor of delayed revenue sports? Eliminate all sports all year? I think for an athlete this is going to be a very difficult year as far as sports go, not to mention a substantially degraded academic experience. Won’t be surprised if numerous students elect to take a gap year.

If I had a son/daughter that was going to be an incoming college freshman I would definitely have them defer and take a gap year. Remote learning is a joke and the college experience would not be the same behind masks, social distancing and hybrid classrooms. I think reduce enrollments are on the horizon and with that comes less $$ and more athletic cuts.

Denying factual data seems so much easier than acting upon it; but however effective denial seems in the short term, it's a recipe for disaster in the long run.

The problem with our Cold 19 response and projecting appropriate national behavior from here is that we are still gathering factual data. Does the current spike in cases in places like Florida, Texas, Arizona, Cali, etc., particularly among a younger demographic than were affected in the NYC tri-state area, portend a change in our desire for a need for caution. If there isn't a concomitant rise in deaths or lasting impact among that demographic perhaps not. The issue is we will just have to wait and see, which simply leaves us in the limbo that a large segment of our population is already eager to dismiss. The seemingly premature social relaxing in the states mentioned clearly hasn't sufficiently played itself out to render any kind of final verdict yet. I would guess the same will happen with the country's reengagement with sports on every level. Pro sports look to be ready to recommence quite soon, and the success or failure of their efforts both socially and financially will likely have a powerful impact on what happens with college sports going forward, particularly this fall. That impact will likely be a huge determinant in college athletic budgets which in many cases are likely to be a big factor in how later year sports are dealt with as well. For the moment it appears the best we can do is wait and see no matter how strong the urge to be proactive.
