My nominee for the biggest upset in college lacrosse is the 2007 Drexel —Virginia game. Virginia was the defending national champions and was ranked #1 going into the 2007 season. Drexel, on the other hand, was un-ranked and had been picked to finish last in the CAA (behind Robert Morris and Sacred Heart). It had snowed in Charlottesville a couple of days before the game and at game time there were piles of snow surrounding the field. UVA led by 1-2 goals throughout the first 3 quarters of the game. Late in the fourth quarter the Dragons cut the lead to one when Kevin Dart scored a short-handed goal but Virginia had the ball and a one goal lead with about two minutes to go. Instead of simply running out the clock, one of the Virginia players took a shot and ended up hitting a pipe. There was a frantic dash for the loose ball and with about 20 seconds left on the clock the Dragons’ Adam Crystal came up with the ball and the coach quickly called timeout. Drexel put the ball back into play from mid-field and after faking a dodge towards the goal, the Dragons’ Andrew Chapman found red-shirt freshman Colin Ambler wide open in front of the crease. Ambler’s first goal of his college career tied the game at 10 goals each and there were still 5 or 6 seconds left in the game. Taking the face-off for Drexel was true-freshman Zach Fisher. Zach won the face-off cleanly and sprinted down the center field, trying to decide his next move. When Zach was about 15 yards from the goal one of the Virginia poles moved to stop the ball but, in doing so, he left Colin Ambler open about 6 yards out. It was Colin’s second goal of his college career that gave Drexel a 11 to 10 over the No. ranked Virginia Cavaliers on their own field.
