I was on a livestream chat today and had a pleasant exchange with a lady from England ~ like me she said we need to stop using cars so much and need to return to using horses for transportation including the use of horse drawn trolleys. Was very surprised to find someone agree with me in this matter. :D

Taught me so well, that I grabbed that gold

^ I enjoyed the Bicentennial in '76 but somehow missed that barge and the historical stuff it displayed. Must have been some really good artifacts.

for years, one of my fave hangouts was Emmons Avenue in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn ~ this is how it looked like in 1911 with Manhattan beach in the background:

One isn't a pic and the other is real old but in going through more gear taken back from my mothers house recently and had pulled these out - she was a huge Brookly Dodgers fan (don't know about others but even filling three, thirty yard dumpsters from a 1,100sq. ft. above grade ranch plus 500 or so sq. ft. finished below grade mostly in a "Florida room", I still have piles and boxes that I brought back and slowly working through two years later..)

Not exactly old NY photos but it fits the bill:

https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/11/23/ ... -entwined/

In ‘Edward Hopper’s New York,’ a city and artist forever entwined
Hopper’s affection for the city comes through in this expansive survey including more than 200 paintings and drawings.

You can’t think about Edward Hopper without thinking of mid-20th century New York: its shoulder-to-shoulder tenements, its bridges, its pharmacies, its lunch counters and late-night diners. Hopper grew up in nearby Nyack, flirting with city life on frequent weekend family excursions. In 1899, he started studying art in the city; in 1908, in his mid-20s, he made it official, moving to Manhattan and touching off a connection that would endure well past his death in 1967 at 84.

“Edward Hopper’s New York,” an expansive survey at the Whitney Museum of American Art that opened last month, captures the entwined lives of city and artist with more than 200 paintings and drawings; an array of letters, newspaper articles, and photographs deepen the connection. With his specimen-like renderings of New York every which way, Hopper can come across like a dispassionate observer, which, to be fair, he often was. But he was also devoted to the defense of his beloved city, under constant threat of rampant development.

All my life I've always enjoyed Hopper's atmospheric work. Sometimes you almost feel like you are in the scene. Great work. Timeless.
