I think it is helpful to bear in mind that, on average, 7,500 persons die in the United States every day; and that 99% of all COVID cases in the US are classified as 'mild'.

I think it is helpful to bear in mind that, on average, 1700 persons die in Italy every day; and that yesterday 475 died from COVID there.

Here are some eye opening graphs about the deaths in the US from that site. When do you think that death rate is is going to peak or even start to slow down?

I have been tracking it with my own spreadsheet, with the data from the JHU site for about a week. The US number has not moved much, although a bit downward.

You won't see the USA number really move until time and testing ramp up. Why not use the Worldmeter site? That curve was flat for 6 weeks.
That's just # of deaths/day, not %'s. No denominator.
In the worldmeter chart?

So Trump opens his daily presser with the 6 person study report. Not surprising. Giving hope - sure, over selling - yup! But what salesman doesn't.

President Donald Trump doubled down on his use of the term "Chinese virus" during a news conference on the coronavirus pandemic Wednesday, two days after he drew backlash for using the term on Twitter.

... John C. Yang, president and executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, told NBC Asian America that Trump's wording isn't just innocuous and is having a dangerous impact.

"I absolutely think that words used by him matter," he said. "Certainly use of this term by him and others even in the last couple of weeks have led to a noticeable incline in hate incidents that we are seeing. I do think that there is a correlation."

State Assembly member Yuh-Line Niou, who represents New York City's Chinatown, said she has witnessed the virus' toll on her own community. She remarked that Trump is "fueling the flames of racism with all of his comments."

"To continue calling COVID-19 the 'Chinese virus,' is to basically be racist. It's fueling the xenophobia we're seeing all over our districts," she said.

Niou also said she thinks Trump's comments make it so that citizens feel "justified" in their racism, playing off their already-heightened anxiety.

You gotta get over there to DC and set those crazy incompetent fools straight.

Better hurry this might be over before you can get there.

“No discussions occurred between WHO and CDC about WHO providing COVID-19 tests to the United States,” said WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris. “This is consistent with experience since the United States does not ordinarily rely on WHO for reagents or diagnostic tests because of sufficient domestic capacity.”

Salty we can make that case over and over but will get nowhere.

Google "Trump refuses WHO Coronavirus Test"—I stopped 6 pages in—stories from every media outlet All confirming the lie.

Same with the claim Trump fired the only person at the White House that could've stopped/managed/understood the coronavirus epidemic.

They print the lie. Reprint the lie. Then amplify the lie across all platforms. In most cases using the same vocabulary.

Then will get a media run poll that says a majority of Americans believe the lie.
It is not a lie to say that the Trump administration effed this one up. Yes they were not "offered" the tests from WHO - but THEY COULD HAVE ASKED!

And they did get tied up in the "normal" way of dealing with approvals rather than treating this as a real emergency were TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE and get their butts moving to figure things out in advance.

The issue of getting rid of the NSC group to deal with pandemics was short-sighted and just compounds the problem, but is only a small part. The fact is that while South Korea got on a "war" footing early on (mostly because of their prior experience with SARS and MERS) our supreme leader kept downplaying the problem and pushing back on almost all the early recommendations. Our own CDC declared this an emergency quite some time ago (late Jan/early Feb) but no one at the top wanted to press hard early for fear of what that might mean for their re-election.

So instead we have late reaction, and a bigger problem.
Saw press reports then amplified press reports and posts here on this forum—that the two naval hospital ships were MONTHS from being available on site. Wasn't trump an idiot for waiting.

The Navy is activating USNS Mercy, based at San Diego, California, and USNS Comfort, based at Norfolk, Virginia. Under normal conditions, the two ships sit dockside and are manned for only basic maintenance. Upon activation, each is boarded by U.S. Navy medical personnel and loaded with medical supplies and equipment. At full strength, each ship has a crew of 71 and up to 1,200 doctors, nurses, and other medical specialists. The process typically takes five days..

5 days
So, we should expect a ship up and operational in NYC by the end of next week?

That would be very good news.
Stop being unreasonable & get real. That's just the logistics for making the necessary preparations to get the ship underway. That's based on the med staff being identified & standing by to board. This is not a preplanned deployment (like the 5 mos one Comfort just completed), where the med staff has lead time to coordinate leave from their regular jobs. There's probably a scramble to assemble the staff in a way that minimizes the impact on their primary medical facilities. That's what SecDef Esper was trying to tell you, through your willfully obtuse TDS ear plugs.
Are you reprimanding 6ft or me?
I fully accepted your estimate of 3 weeks being reasonable.

This 5 day thing wasn't from me.
Would be super, but it doesn't line up with the reporting (which 6ft is calling a "lie").
Your explanation made far more sense.

You cannot infer safety for the general population from a sample size of 6. In any way. It did not appear to harm these 6 individuals. Error bars on that one way too big to significantly catch side effects from the combination, let alone see much in side effects of each individual drug if already low.

Someone who gets it. The answer is - not known. Not suspected to be a problem, but not known. This question was not answered in the very small study. It is promising. It is not ready for release to the public in general. Not close.

What will happen is they will do a more significant trial. This will take time. They will also release it for use in very critical cases, with the permission of the patient. If the FDA holds true to form, they will follow their procedure on both safety and effectiveness and study it carefully. We are closer to the beginning than the end on this "drug".

I actually find it hilarious, that the non-scientists, general deniers of climate change, who accuse scientist of jumping to conclusions, these same folks doing all the conclusion jumping. The scientist taking a measured stance on this drug.

I had the same thought yesterday. Don't know but have a suspicion. It is interesting that Orange Duce is now back leading the presser. Pence hardly speaks, Fauci is no where to be seen. I am sure the press is on to the Fauci mystery. Perhaps they argue we don't need Fauci if we have a Birx. I would normally buy that, but suspect there is more to the story. Birx is more malleable than Fauci. Fauci like Trump is a show pony, and the lead show pony doesn't really like other show ponies.

But it IS a beginning. It will be interesting indeed but one is antimicrobial and one is antiviral. They are not interacting on the same mechanism. Is there an interaction, like you said we do not know but it certainly is as good a place to start as any.

Of course trials will need to be increases but as to the FDA's response that is another - not known. You are assuming, perhaps correctly, that attitudes would not change if mortality increases dramatically. I am not going to assume anything at this time as alot of people have said, this is a new and interesting time.
