“No discussions occurred between WHO and CDC about WHO providing COVID-19 tests to the United States,” said WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris. “This is consistent with experience since the United States does not ordinarily rely on WHO for reagents or diagnostic tests because of sufficient domestic capacity.”

Salty we can make that case over and over but will get nowhere.

Google "Trump refuses WHO Coronavirus Test"—I stopped 6 pages in—stories from every media outlet All confirming the lie.

Same with the claim Trump fired the only person at the White House that could've stopped/managed/understood the coronavirus epidemic.

They print the lie. Reprint the lie. Then amplify the lie across all platforms. In most cases using the same vocabulary.

Then will get a media run poll that says a majority of Americans believe the lie.
It is not a lie to say that the Trump administration effed this one up. Yes they were not "offered" the tests from WHO - but THEY COULD HAVE ASKED!

And they did get tied up in the "normal" way of dealing with approvals rather than treating this as a real emergency were TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE and get their butts moving to figure things out in advance.

The issue of getting rid of the NSC group to deal with pandemics was short-sighted and just compounds the problem, but is only a small part. The fact is that while South Korea got on a "war" footing early on (mostly because of their prior experience with SARS and MERS) our supreme leader kept downplaying the problem and pushing back on almost all the early recommendations. Our own CDC declared this an emergency quite some time ago (late Jan/early Feb) but no one at the top wanted to press hard early for fear of what that might mean for their re-election.

So instead we have late reaction, and a bigger problem.

Saw press reports then amplified press reports and posts here on this forum—that the two naval hospital ships were MONTHS from being available on site. Wasn't trump an idiot for waiting.

The Navy is activating USNS Mercy, based at San Diego, California, and USNS Comfort, based at Norfolk, Virginia. Under normal conditions, the two ships sit dockside and are manned for only basic maintenance. Upon activation, each is boarded by U.S. Navy medical personnel and loaded with medical supplies and equipment. At full strength, each ship has a crew of 71 and up to 1,200 doctors, nurses, and other medical specialists. The process typically takes five days..

Peter Brown wrote: Thu Mar 19, 2020 9:16 am Assuming we all 'shut down' for a few weeks if not one month, I believe this event will prove to be far scarier in hindsight than reality, and that we will learn a great deal from it. The first thing is, the UN (oh god...) need to come up with an army of medics to tackle the next pandemic. The second is, if you have lived an unhealthy life and as a result are an unhealthy person (obesity looks to be a constant among those dying in the west), pathogens will find you...it's probably best to start living healthier lives no matter where you reside.

I want Trump to figure that one out but I'm not sure he's the guy to lead that charge. But life has forever changed for us. 'Society' will demand a coordinated global response team after this one blows past.

Honestly, were I Trump, I'd nominate Andrew Yang to take the US lead. Just not sure if Trump has that leadership skill to hire someone smarter...a good leader always hires smarter people than himself.
I agree with much of this, though I'm not yet at a point at thinking the reality won't be brutal.

But you do know that WHO is that organization?
Perhaps the lesson is to greatly expand that organization's resources, not cut them the way the Trump Admin was doing.
Sure looks like that would be smart.

Likewise for all international orgs...the world is interconnected whether we like it or not.

I'd agree that WHO should be the answer. But we will need a proper American leader to drive that effort. I'd put in a guy like Yang. Or Bloomberg. I actually think Yang can drive consensus better than Bloomberg, but the urgency might require Bloomberg. Perhaps both.

It'd be interesting to see if Trump offered such a role to Bloomberg if he'd accept... If Trump was smart (and I am not saying he is), he'd come on bended knee to Bloomberg and ask him to manage this. Someone needs to make me POTUS...I will only hire smarter people than myself! (not that difficult  )

I thought Admiral Giroir just a couple days ago said he enquired of the WHO about their test. Harris is correct as to what is SOP. You want to do something besides SOP, the administration has to do something to make that happen. They did not. This is not news.

So, we should expect a ship up and operational in NYC by the end of next week?

That would be very good news.

Stop being unreasonable & get real. That's just the logistics for making the necessary preparations to get the ship underway. That's based on the med staff being identified & standing by to board. This is not a preplanned deployment (like the 5 mos one Comfort just completed), where the med staff has lead time to coordinate leave from their regular jobs. There's probably a scramble to assemble the staff in a way that minimizes the impact on their primary medical facilities. That's what SecDef Esper was trying to tell you, through your willfully obtuse TDS ear plugs.

I think it is helpful to bear in mind that, on average, 7,500 persons die in the United States every day; and that 99% of all COVID cases in the US are classified as 'mild'.

@timkmak obtained a recording of Sen. BURR three weeks ago in which he tells attendees of a private luncheon of dire coronavirus consequences long before the WH was acknowledging them publicly. Compared it to the 1918 flu.

I think it is helpful to bear in mind that, on average, 1700 persons die in Italy every day; and that yesterday 475 died from COVID there.

Here are some eye opening graphs about the deaths in the US from that site. When do you think that death rate is is going to peak or even start to slow down?

I know you are not expecting anyone to be surprised. I spoke to one of my older Trumpnista relatives yesterday to see how they were doing given the virus situation. Nothing changes, they still don't see the problem with Trump, or Hannity. They (Trump and friends) have an effective strategy for engaging the Trumpnista supporters. Trumpnista have a memory retention of under 2 nanoseconds. You make two diametrically opposed statements, one immediately after the other. They will believe the second and see no conflict with the first and swear the 2nd was always the case. A truly remarkable phenomenon.

I have been tracking it with my own spreadsheet, with the data from the JHU site for about a week. The US number has not moved much, although a bit downward.

You have a fair point, but my reading of this virus is Italy has a unique situation on its hands, an older/heavy/out-of-shape smoking population.

You won't see the USA number really move until time and testing ramp up. Why not use the Worldmeter site? That curve was flat for 6 weeks.

Psychological projection is a defence mechanism in which the human ego defends itself against unconscious impulses or qualities (both positive and negative) by denying their existence in themselves while attributing them to others. Freud considered that, in projection, thoughts, motivations, desires, and feelings that cannot be accepted as one's own are dealt with by being placed in the outside world and attributed to someone else.

Projection may help a fragile ego reduce anxiety, but at the cost of a certain dissociation, as in dissociative identity disorder In extreme cases, an individual's personality may end up becoming critically depleted.

THEY KNEW!

Intelligence Chairman Raised Virus Alarms Weeks Ago, Secret Recording Shows

https://www.npr.org/2020/03/19/81819253 ... n-covid-19

On Feb. 27, when the United States had 15 confirmed cases of COVID-19, President Trump was tamping down fears and suggesting the virus could be seasonal.

"It's going to disappear. One day, It's like a miracle. It will disappear," the president said then, before adding, "it could get worse before it gets better. It could maybe go away. We'll see what happens."

On that same day, Burr attended a luncheon held at a social club called the Capitol Hill Club. And he delivered a much more alarming message.

"There's one thing that I can tell you about this: It is much more aggressive in its transmission than anything that we have seen in recent history," he said, according to a secret recording of the remarks obtained by NPR. "It is probably more akin to the 1918 pandemic."
