Thanks, good review of our current status.
Why focus on the negative! Wishful thinking is what matters.
pretty confusing what the author means about worst on fatality. since may 10th, i guess?
I think the #'s could be argued a bit earlier than that as well, but, yes, the language used is real time failure. Current death rates, going back at least into May have been much worse than any other developed nation.

well, not current or real time, but since may 10. author really doesn't make that clear though, certainly not by the title or opening salvo.

Pete, don’t look at this. It’s one of those fascinating progression things. Florida comes out on top (or at the bottom depending on your perspective).

I thought this was quite clear as to the time spans being referenced. Right now we are the worst in the world among developed nations. And have been the worst for many months now.

The proportion of Americans dying from coronavirus infections is the highest in the developed world, according to a study of global mortality rates that shows the U.S. pandemic response left citizens exposed to the lethal disease.

Early in the outbreak, the U.S. mortality rate from Covid-19 was lower than in many other hard-hit countries, including the U.K., Spain and the Netherlands, according to the report Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. But as spring turned to summer, the U.S. largely failed to embrace public-health and policy measures that have helped other countries reduce death rates.

If U.S. deaths after May 10 had occurred at the same pace as in Spain, the U.S. mortality rate would be 47% lower, with 93,247 fewer people dying, the report found. More than 100,000 fewer Americans would have died if the U.S. had the same mortality rate as the Netherlands.

spain, cited in the article, has taken the baton for now. considering case lag, things may be messy there for a little while. several others, including uk and netherlands cited, might be coming up on the outside soon.
these countries may be more inclined to turn things again on "lockdowns" to stem the tide, where we don't seem to be inclined to take that path.

You are correct. Thanks.

Indeed, Spain, with 1/7th our population has recently inched past us in average daily deaths per million pop. And I'd agree that their swell in cases, now declining, will probably keep them just above us for the next month, given lag. On the other hand, our cases are swelling now and it looks like we'll stay on that trajectory for some time. Not sure there's public policy in the offing, or changed aggregate behavior, that's going to change that trajectory markedly for the next few months.

But no aspersions to Spain, but hardly a comparable we'd normally set for ourselves.

damn, those are our only comps? looks like we're in last, then.

hopefully we do better than germany going forward, who my boys at ihme have deaths going up over 6 fold in the next 3 1/2 months, and that's with them recognizing only about 1/4 of the daily infections germany says they have nowadays.

good luck to all comp countries!
