There is talk that Universities will be able to directly do NIL with players, that will likely change the current construct. NIL deals are supposed to be tied to Universities or performance now.

Can't speak to specific names but hearing something similar, curious how many are recognizable names.
Hearing that a decent amount of Canisius’s team is in the portal from an inside source on the team.
Rough few years for the Griff's, lost their FOGO to Cuse 2 years ago, their best Attackmen to Rutgers last year and now this. Tough to have success in NY with so many D1 programs but they wanna shake things up program wise.
Definitely a tough draw to go to a school that show's little to no support for their student athletes. Honestly think there pretty luck to have the coach that they have considering where guys are transferring too. Unfortunately I think this is the way of the world now with schools like Canisius being a stepping stone for some of these under recruited players to move up. Can't blame them for not want to play in Buffalo in February with no indoor facility....

2023: Colin Kelly (A) -> Rutgers, Kevin Carney (A)-> Albany, Chance Cook (D) -> UMass, Ryan Farron (D) -> St. John's
2022: Johnny Richiusa (FO) ->Syracuse, Ryan Sharkey (D) # -> UMass
Canisius could certainly be a bit more wise with their recruiting budget if they took advantage of it's location to Syracuse, Rochester and Ontario, CA. Instead the roster is made up of players from NC, Wisc, NH, Minn, Wash state, Ind, Mich, CO, Ill and Missouri... Recruiting/Traveling to those locations has to be crazy expensive compared to 10 -15 trips down the thruway. (look at LeMoyne's roster, it has worked for them). Getting more local players on the roster gets more fans/parents supporting the program by showing up to games. It also serves the University as a whole as it's cheap marketing.
This is a touchy subject for Miyashita. I criticized his lack of Syr, Roc and Ont on the roster on twitter a couple of times. He blocked me.
5 out of the 6 guys above are from NY... Seems like there recruiting there surrounding area pretty well, and then losing them to schools that support athletics. I'll be honest I have just watched this program from afar, but claiming that they're not correctly utilizing there probably minuscule recruiting budget on kids from out of the state is asinine. My guess is that to make ends meat these coaches are going to events that pay them to attend, and see kids from everywhere. Not to mention a lot of schools push for student athletes from out of state.

My point in all of this is that in todays NIL culture a coach at a school like Canisius, Cleveland State, Manhattan, etc. is going to have to spend a good chunk of his time recruiting his own team. My question is what (if anything) do they have to offer?

A delicious meal plan? A pretty campus? A renovated gym?

All seems so quaint these days.

Schools in freezing locales definitely do need an indoor practice facility.

Mearns recruited me back in 2006. I went up there to visit. School is spread out in a not to nice neighborhood. Campus is ugly at best. Have a decent MBA program as well as nursing from what I recall. Stadium seats about 1,000 kids. I visited because it was a nice small Jesuit school that I felt I could play at as a freshman (instead I went to Loyola, also a nice small Jesuit school where I played very little 😂). Since then I’ve visited Buffalo a couple of times recently as a former girlfriend lives there and nothing has changed. Mearns left to go to a school that’s fully funded. Campus is still ugly. No changes in facilities. Seems that only kids going there are those that want to play D1 and don’t care about anything else, including winning. Kids that have some success leave because they’re sick of losing. Mearns, who has been Canadian Lax coach for years, couldn’t get much talent to come there in spite of proximity to Canada. Can’t see this program surviving long term especially with NIL.

Maybe, just maybe, the big NIL schools (probably B1G & ACC, 😂) will pay out massive NIL $$$’s to these lower tier D1 & D3 portal players expecting great results. Could this be a repeat of the early recruiting misses by taking chances on unproven players resulting in less than stellar play on the field? As a mid-major alum, I wouldn’t be disappointed.

I understand there’s now college level film with these players, but playing with the big boys takes special players. Are they chasing a Natty and not worried about playing time? Maybe the masters program they’re seeking is only available at a specific school. Maybe it’s only about the money. Maybe they’re just betting on themselves. Can’t be unhappy with any reason why they choose a school. BUT, a mid major program may deliver all the wants & needs. It was proven this year that PL teams can play with anyone. Keep those dreams alive and don’t rule out mid majors gentlemen. This is my PSA announcement for Loyola…

Hence they all view the portal as a free option but eventually we will see a couple of real bad outcomes for a couple of overly aggressive transfers and it will change the dynamic. But today it’s the newness of it and lack of negative consequences observed to date leading to all the power in the players hands and the coaches pulling their pants down all the time.

I dont like hearing kids are trying to hold teams hostage for more money, but I also dont blame them for taking the money. The problem is fans trying to buy wins in a sport that has very little exposure. This is one of the best examples of abusing NIL.
Only has to have exposure in the donors circles rather than larger society.
Only the boosters do it. Personal gratification. It's actually become a bit of a problem for other facility projects for Athletic Directors. They are complaining that it is hard to get the to upgrade, when the response is lets just use the money to buy better players.
The money should go to labor Vs grossly out of market vertical costs for infrastructure/. Most colleges have risk their future on vanity capex the last 20yrs and have shown zero ability to budget or manage finances.

So maybe the ADs should learn about zero based budgeting and held accountable for their actions. Instead people like Debbie Yow get a promotion..

There is talk that Universities will be able to directly do NIL with players, that will likely change the current construct. NIL deals are supposed to be tied to Universities or performance now.
Maybe the coaches might think that would give them more control, but I would be surprised if any legal or compliance department wants that. They would be in terror that somebody would try to assert that Title IX would apply to an equal distribution of NIL money. Once they explain it to the coaches, and the coaches realize they would become uncompetitive in their revenue sports, and the school adopts the D-III model, including D-III salaries and duties for the coaches, they will re-think it. And I believe the ability of the NCAA to impose it universally is reduced, because one defector is all it takes to blow up the collusion.

Big 10 and the SEC got together to discuss keeping it in house, so I would assume they had the full blessing of the member Universities.
Project DI, which would permit schools to strike NIL deals directly with athletes while also creating a separate subdivision in FBS for high-revenue producing schools, is expected to be one of the first things the advisory group to address, according to Yahoo. They will also address antitrust lawsuits that focus on athlete compensation and organization as well as retroactive NIL payments and the transfer and NIL rules put in place by the NCAA, according to the conference commissioners.

Got the full list. D1, 2 and 3. As well as where people have already matriculated. Breaking it down now. Due to the length, I'll only post the D1 guys. Gonna break it up into portions too.

PM me and I'll send all D3's and you can do whatever you'd like with it.
