Love the schedule. Off is Cabrini, Arcadia and Etown, to add Ursinus, Grove City and Denison. Swapping Bates for Amherst at the Mustang too all makes for a considerable strength bump. Tough road stretch early, down to VA, up to Rochester, out to the shore, and then into the Mustang. Can’t wait.
Super excited about this schedule, a little surprised that there is no MAC crossover and that Cabrini is off the schedule but I love the additions of Ursinus, Grove City and Denison. there first 7 games are very hard especially the 5 game road trip starting at W&L and ending with Amherst at Mustang Classic. Stevenson on a Wednesday Night is going to be tough.

I am hearing that the new kids and meshing well with the returners and I would expect a couple of freshmen to see the field in some capacity.

Childs recruiting is just moving to the next level first he is recruiting nationally, from Texas to Florida to Vermont and out to Colorado, Minnesota, Michigan. Just all over and he is getting solid kids to commit which is awesome.

Great OOC schedule, exactly what you would expect from the Spartans

Should be interesting. Tough opening month with travel to some tough teams. Losing key players on defense, goal, and mid, I am looking forward to see how the younger players take over.

Looking at the last two classes and some of the committed 23’s, this year could be a question mark, but getting them ready for a nice 4-5 year run.

Not saying this will be a down year, but it will be tough to repeat the final 4 appearances after losing so many key players

It will be tough to repeat the success of last year I would agree but this team has several really good pieces coming back including 5 really important offensive contributors 2 solid poles, 3 ssdm, and both of their primary face-off kids. Now I freely admit that losing Kennedy will be a big factor but not really a much bigger factor than losing Nation the year before. Wolf and Reynolds will be missed and their experience will absolutely be missed, but Childs has assembled a very talented sophomore and freshman class, so while there may be a slight tick down I would not expect a huge drop-off as almost every other team in the country is dealing with graduation issues as well

Completely agree. I was suggesting the team will be younger and built for the next few years.

They’ve lost key pieces many times and have managed…

At the close of the 2015 season they lost the most prolific scorer in the program’s history, 3x AA Attackman Tyler Hutson who still holds the program’s career goals and points records. They followed it up by winning the CAC in 2016 over the Gulls.

After York beat Salisbury for the CAC in 2016, they lost (at the time) the program’s winningest goalie in AA Caleb Abney, and HM AA Attack Andrew Gamble who's name still litters the program’s record books. They wound up replacing Gamble’s offense and Abney’s goal coverage with the attack trio of Pfeiffer, Davis and McGrath and goalie Landry Marshall, going 17-4 in 2017 and 19-3 in 2018

At the end of 2018, York lost AA Dman Joey Fiorino (drafted pro), AA Mid Matt Whitcher (drafted pro), AA Mid Dillon Hannah and HM AA goalie Landry Marshall. The same conversations were had (biggest being in net) York reloaded at defense, midfield, and with freshman Jack Michael starting in net, went 19-3 in 2019.

2019 ending saw York lose the entire dynamic attack trio of 2x AA Pfeiffer, AA Davis and HM AA McGrath, AA defender Kevin Witchey (now the Wesleyan D coach) and 2x AA FO Billy Sasso. Facciponti replaced Sasso’s faceoff dominance, and Kennedy took the D reins. Brendan O’Sullivan stepped up to lead the attack, and they went 20-4 over the COVID years of 2020 and 2021 combined.

At the start of 2022, while retaining many key pieces, York lost their then single season point record holder, AA attackman O’Sullivan, gradtransfering to DI, and LSM-OTY AA Tyler Nation. Up stepped freshman Ben Mayer to be the new offensive threat at attack, and the big man Ethan Greene took over the LSM lead role, ushering York to a 20-3 season and it’s first final four.

Coach has been great at recruiting excellent players, so every year when an excellent player is lost, there is another excellent player to fill that void. They reload at this point, and have the depth to do so right off their bench.

A final four is a great accomplishment, but they want more, and I expect that their youth at some positions will only make their level of play strengthen over the next 4-5 years, as you stated.

This is exactly the point, they simply have been reloading, Their junior class has some really solid kids who you have not seen yet because of the kids coming back, they have really good options for that 3rd attack spot and real depth at the midfield.

I think Briegel will get a long look at close and Hull should get some run at LSM, and there are a trio of sophomore poles that can step in and play.

Things get going for really next week and we will see how they look.

Congrats to Matt Whitcher ‘18 on his PLL Championship with the Waterdogs. It doesn’t happen without him, scoring the game tying goal vs the Whipsnakes with 3:47 to play in the 4th quarter of the Semi-finals.

For years seeing Ryan Kennedy (‘22) on the field has been the stuff of nightmares for opposing teams. Now they’ll see him on the sidelines, preparing York’s next group of shutdown poles, as he has been named an Assistant Coach for the Spartans.

I wonder what this does to the alumni game. Technically, Kennedy and whitcher are on the active team.

I don’t think being an active coach takes them out of the mix as alumni. If I recall correctly, Whitcher briefly ran some midfield for the alums last year.

Caleb Abney soaked up a ton of shots for the alums, and it was instantly clear that Ben Mayer was the real deal. Seeing the Lilly brothers in a braveheart at the end was a great way to wrap it up. I’m really looking forward to the event, it’s a great peek at the upcoming year’s team, and always a good time.

Can anyone speak on size of team and travel? With over 50 players on the roster plus coaches. Will everyone get to travel to away games? Or is there a cap?

There is a limit on the amount of people who can travel. In the past, it seems that York tries to carry an amount where everyone can travel. Cuts this year perhaps?

16 incoming with the VMI transfer. 15 if the kid from TX fell through.

15 Sr/5th/6ths potentially outgoing. 16 with Fought transferring to Stockton.

With the roster at 49 last year, that’s about as close to breaking even as you can get. I’m glad walk-ons are trying out. Competition will give a glimpse into the mettle of the new faces. There were cuts when I played, and we weren’t sporting a 49 man roster…

Now more than ever, York is a “culture” team. If a kid isn’t a good fit, sometimes it’s the old adage of addition by subtraction.

Last year every player made every trip, even the playoffs although they all could not be on the field as the NCAA has a number limit for every team. The kid from Texas did not make it in to campus, and the walk -on is listed on the 2022 recruit list so there are 15 new players on the field. Numbers will be an issue for the next year or two as seniors and juniors still have that extra year that they can use if they want.
