It is true that different countries had different timing, demographics and policies about Covid.

But at this point, they all have it mostly figured out. The Nordics, the Euros, Japan, SK, Canada, UK, Australia, NZ. Including some (Spain, Italy, UK, Sweden) that got completely hammered in March/April.

The real question is how come we are basically the only first world country that is still doing lousy?
Unlike those other 1st world countries, the virus is still in the initial community spread phase in much of the interior, as it worked it's way south, then west & now finally north into the midwest. It has to do with our size, dispersal, decentralized govt structure & travel patterns.

We were too big, too dispersed & lacked the adequate public health infrastructure, test kits, lab capacity & ppe to do adequate contact tracing & isolation. We were playing catch up from the start.
Ummm how is Canada doing relative to us?
Canada is more different than similar to the US in all the aspects I noted. Much less densely populated, fewer large urban centers, less dependent on public transportation, a national health care system in place.
For Salty, there's always an alternative explanation to anything re Trump's leadership.

We have too many Petey's in America, led by a idiot, narcissist crook with a massive bully pulpit he's used to exhort millions of Petey's to resist public health measures other countries have adopted easily.
 ...& for you, everything is about "Trump's leadership". I'm talking about how the virus has spread. It's impossible to have a rational discussion about anything without your intrusive reflexive TDS Tourrets interruptions.
That IS how the virus has spread. Trump’s lack of leadership, or choice of leadership style for those who think he’s lead at all, cannot be overlooked as a difference in how the US has addressed this pandemic compared to others.
Trump is a given. I was attempting to have an analytical apolitical discussion about the pattern of the virus spread & how, which apparently is not possible in this forum without being drowned out by the TDS chorus.

Another Covid miracle! Wherever the left goes, Covid just doesn't follow!

Why the hard pass on South Korea?
sk did a great job pushing out their tests in january+ to be prepared. probably better than anyone in the world. their previous scares with pandemics certainly helped there. as that did getting compliance for privacy interventions accepted. and a population that the government could easily get to follow their commands and also do all the right things themselves. helped them control what could've been a disaster.
their privacy enactment, quarantine strategy and fines aren't my cup of tea.

it's a sensible angle.
other posters' government and leadership take certainly could have an outsized role when it's all written. and american expectations on liberties. health has to play a role in there somewhere.

if and when we wrap this up, there will be volumes written. even then, everyone will probably be able to pick a side.

no, you were trying to say that our exceptional nation is uniquely incapable of handling a pandemic, not because we have made really, really stupid mistakes in leadership and social response, but because "we're too big and too dispersed". However, Canada (which is bigger and more dispersed) has "fewer urban centers and less dependent on public transportation" yet, all sorts of other nations have dense population centers and are more dependent upon public transportation...

You're flailing all over the place to avoid the leadership and social response factor.

However, where I think you have added something rational to the equation is your inclusion of "lacked the adequate public health infrastructure, test kits, lab capacity & ppe to do adequate contact tracing & isolation". You note that Canada has a "national health care system in place" in contrast to the US. So do all those other developed nations that have performed better than the US. But some which have done poorly too also have them...

You mention decentralized government, which is indeed a factor particular to our leadership's response, which made a conscious decision to avoid federal responsibility and accountability by deferring key aspects of the response unnecessarily to states. This was a huge mistake, clearly so from the first months of the virus spread and the recognition of the criticality of PPE, tests, tracing. These did not need to be deferred to the states under our system of government, rather it was a conscious leadership decision to do so. It was stupid and it was cowardly.

Way too many Americans followed the advice of this cowardly leader and politicized public health response.

So, yeah, the US is "different".

Trump’s political calculus was to ship the responsibility and hence the blame to states and when it was “blue states” seeing the brunt of it, he as hoping to have the red states avoid it and he would use it as a campaign issue. He chose to politicize it. It was pointed out in real team. Same strategy with these riots. Fan flames in “dem” cities and the use it as part of the campaign strategy. The dude is paper thin and so are his cheerleaders here.

There's some truth to this. The case/death graphs for NY/NJ-stan, for example, looks pretty much like the Spain, Italy and France. Hammered early, made mistakes, then got it figured out, generally doing OK now.

But there's really no excuse for AZ/TX/FL-stan. If you saw what was happening in NY/NJ-stan, your reaction shouldn't be "Re-open!" and "Where's my apology?" Instead, you should be Germany -- they saw what was happening to their neighbors, took it seriously from the beginning, and never got hit badly. Douglas MacArthur -- all failures can be summed up by two words -- Too late.

And since we have a federal system, having a complete disaster as our leader is a big factor. Sometimes, you just really need effective national action. Which is hard to do if you brand that big effective federal government as the Deep State and think Jared can fix it for you.

Trump Lied and Downplayed the Threat; Woodward Has Admission on Tape

Trump knew early how dangerous the novel coronavirus was, but deliberately lied to the American people about the threat. Bob Woodward has tapes of Trump admitting his deception.

President Trump’s head popped up during his top-secret intelligence briefing in the Oval Office on Jan. 28 when the discussion turned to the novel coronavirus outbreak in China.

“This will be the biggest national security threat you face in your presidency,” national security adviser Robert O’Brien told Trump, according to a new book by Washington Post associate editor Bob Woodward. “This is going to be the roughest thing you face.”

Matthew Pottinger, the deputy national security adviser, agreed. He told the president that after reaching contacts in China, it was evident that the world faced a health emergency on par with the flu pandemic of 1918, which killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide.

Ten days later, Trump called Woodward and revealed that he thought the situation was far more dire than what he had been saying publicly.

“You just breathe the air and that’s how it’s passed,” Trump said in a Feb. 7 call. “And so that’s a very tricky one. That’s a very delicate one. It’s also more deadly than even your strenuous flu.”

“This is deadly stuff,” the president repeated for emphasis.

At that time, Trump was telling the nation that the virus was no worse than a seasonal flu, predicting it would soon disappear, and insisting that the U.S. government had it totally under control. It would be several weeks before he would publicly acknowledge that the virus was no ordinary flu and that it could be transmitted through the air.

I suspect most of this will be about who he is, often in his own words, how he makes decisions, and what others say who have worked closely with him, in their own words. Much will be revelatory, though for many of us, only in that so much will be documented on tape.

I doubt it will go into his past business world dealings and what they tell us about him...Cohen's book tells that story as a first hand witness to it, but not with the sort of meticulous reporting of a pro like Woodward.
