it will be interesting to see what the reason ultimately is for countries at various places now coming in with very low case fatality rates. both the countries that have increasing cases (which may not be out of the woods, but low death rates have persisted) but also sweden. who knows how many infections they really have as they barely test anybody.

i dunno. i think i'd hire the norway guys and gals to run my pandemic. they seem to have done pretty well so far.

don't know enough about any covid measures. hope the populace doesn't lose out on the recent china push into their freedoms. amazing they've kept them at bay this long.

UK and Canadian schools have just recently re-opened. Pretty much full time and in person. Very much TBD how that will go for them.

But recognize that the UK and Canada are on a different planet Covid-wise than where the USA is. Which is especially striking given how horrendous the UK was at first. 7 day average daily deaths:

USA 864
UK 7
Canada 4

Thought that was an interesting hard pass as well.

I get the pass on China's measures, after all, if you didn't get in line, you and your family were headed to a reeducation camp, but then, very, very few didn't get in line immediately...and it worked. Amazingly well, even more so given the magnitude of the outbreak before they recognized adequately what was rapidly and tragically happening with the novel virus.

Hong Kong's social response was voluntary and fast, preceding the government's counsel, indeed, as the local government is essentially controlled by Beijing anyway, the populace didn't trust the early assurance that 'all was fine'...nope, they put on masks fast.

I just find interesting that we look at European countries' responses as potential models, but have some aversion to looking at the Asian countries. Indeed the Asian countries's responses tended to be much more effective, largely because they had strong social cohesion around mask wearing, distancing, testing & tracing etc. In some cases government enforcement was utilized, in others it was more driven by awareness of the threat risk. But in all cases, there was little to no debate about committing to preventing spread through one's own activities and cooperation with whatever the government asked or ordered.

Maybe its all that fish they eat?

Here's what really stands out to me.

It is true that different countries had different timing, demographics and policies about Covid.

But at this point, they all have it mostly figured out. The Nordics, the Euros, Japan, SK, Canada, UK, Australia, NZ. Including some (Spain, Italy, UK, Sweden) that got completely hammered in March/April.

The real question is how come we are basically the only first world country that is still doing lousy?

Unlike those other 1st world countries, the virus is still in the initial community spread phase in much of the interior, as it worked it's way south, then west & now finally north into the midwest. It has to do with our size, dispersal, decentralized govt structure & travel patterns.

We were too big, too dispersed & lacked the adequate public health infrastructure, test kits, lab capacity & ppe to do adequate contact tracing & isolation. We were playing catch up from the start.

We have exhaustively discussed this - a early mistake that was intended to allow those who were in the medical area to have access to scarce masks. Rectified within a few weeks. They should have said use cloth face coverings while there is a shortage of N95s and surgical masks.

I guess you were not listening...

Because of culture and politics.

Before this we collectively thought people from Asian cultures walking around with masks on were over-the-top hypochondriacs. Interestingly India, despite being an Asian nation, doesn’t have a mask culture and is now in rough shape.

And then our public health was politicized by a narcissist.

Canada is more different than similar to the US in all the aspects I noted. Much less densely populated, fewer large urban centers, less dependent on public transportation, a national health care system in place.

Massive eye roll due to a minor detail.

By his statement, our troll would have you believe public schools are back to normal. They’re not reopening in large numbers. Online learning still rules the day. Those schools that are reopening are seeing a large percentage of parents choosing a hybrid model of in-person/on line in order to social distance.

That IS how the virus has spread. Trump’s lack of leadership, or choice of leadership style for those who think he’s lead at all, cannot be overlooked as a difference in how the US has addressed this pandemic compared to others.

How it spread is simple.
The virus spreads between people in proximity to one another through droplets.
The public health measures that reduce spread are well known.

People didn't follow public health measures enough, nor long enough.

Now why didn't people do so is also straightforward. They were told the virus wasn't serious by the person they elected to lead them in crises. Even more importantly, again, and again and again, he made any enthusiasm for coming together to fight the virus spread a political issue.

He made fun of people wearing masks, he made mask wearing a political issue rather than public health imperative.

That's what happened in the US.

Of course, if you want to then discuss why so many people are fooled by this idiot, follow this crook, then that's a whole other discussion.
