Actually - Columbus was pretty bad in some aspects. Arguably worse than some of our early founding forefather slaveholders.

Really good coverage of some of the horrible things he did can be found out there on the intertubes. All left out of what all of us got taught as school children.

Here is an example:

This is good news.

44 years eh? And you blame CONservatives for the pig cops being protected from legal action, rehpremands. ? When's the last time NYcity, or CONservtives, controlled the New York legislature? An pretend COnservative as Governor?

Dunno if you are old enough to remember Rockefeller, Malcolm Wilson, Earl Brydges, Perry Duryea, and a host of other Repukes who controlled much of the NYS legislature and the courts. Outside of NYC, Republicans have always been a large part of the voting population and are largely responsible for much of the legislation that exists there.

Watching Minneapolis Police Chief Arradondo's press conference right now. He is an impressive guy who is in a tight spot. He stated he has broken off talks with the union over a new contract. Looking at many opinions on here, it looks like there are a meaningful majority who feel union reform is one of the big issues. I am, and have always been about a meritocracy. Unions to me are a lot of what is wrong with all government services, not just public safety. Federal employees get automatic raises and bonuses not tethered to any performance metric, just years in service.

Citizens and taxpayers deserve responsive, effective and efficient government. I am not against a fair wage and benefit package, but the BS that supervisors go through to remove non-performing or even insubordinate employees is so difficult that many times the employee is transferred, only to become someone else's problem.

Citizens and taxpayers also deserve to not fear their public servants, whether they be the IRS or the police or our elected representatives. We need to make it easier to "take out the trash".

Since this is the route we are now traveling down... time to eliminate tenure amongst all teachers as well. Hell it takes an act of Congress to try and get rid of a bad teacher. Common thread with the Buffalo push assault. In both cases the police were advancing as a unit, clearing the street or sidewalk, when a protester approached them, entered their personal safety space, blocking them, taking video of the police officer with their cell phones.

Police officers now need to be prepared for encounters with video warrior provocateur protesters who enter their personal safety space, trying to generate an incident captured on video. In both these cases, these 2 provocateurs got the confrontation they sought, but they were not prepared for the consequences of their actions when invading a police officer's personal safety space in a confrontational manner.
Are you ok?

You are now referring to a 75 year old man who regularly volunteers his time for catholic charities as a "provocateur". Sad.
Did he present his AARP card ? What difference does it make what he does with his spare time ? He confronted the cops, got in their face & was clearly confrontational. He wasn't asking for directions to the senior center.

Numbers published by Open Secrets, which is run by the watchdog Center for Responsive Politics, shows the top two recipients of contributions from police groups in the Senate are Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn. The top two in the House are Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., D-N.J., and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md.

Defund the Police!

+1 The police trying to clear the streets had no idea who he was or what his intentions were. If you don't want to be pushed on your ass... don't get into the cops grill and talk chit to him. Sorry there old timer, you learned a lesson the hard way. I hope he is okay but his own stupid actions were the cause if his injuries.

For the record, my wife and I argued about this for way to long last night. When I asked my wife if the old guy had pulled out a gun and shot the cop in the head would that have changed her opinion. She finally got the message.

Let's see, cradle...you actually find an equivalency between monuments erected to founders of this country and those who specifically fought to tear it apart...on behalf of maintaining slavery???

Put that aside, monuments erected specifically by avowed racists on behalf of white supremacy and Jim Crow in order to intimidate?

Certainly there must be some idiots on the extreme left who would conflate these, but I sure hear a lot more false equivalency coming out of the mouths of right wingers than I do these evil lefties that some seem so worried will erase all history.

Of course, perhaps that's why I'm a fiscally conservative leaning, socially progressive leaning moderate...it's the extremes which want to erase or whitewash history...

There's an enormous difference between having an honest appraisal of the full dimensionality of our predecessors, indeed an honest and fulsome understanding of history, and the maintenance of monuments to the worst of that history.... erected specifically by the worst of that history.

We can discern the difference, right?
