JerrysWorld wrote: Thu Jun 20, 2024 1:45 pm I think these transfers could be really good. But I don’t think it elevates us to a talent level of the ACC, as you said. We’ve proven that we don’t need to be at that level though.

The kid Boyden was the Player of the Year from Tufts and he was solid at Virginia, but not spectacular. I think the Fairfield one will be the best.

Looking forward to it.
Talent is one thing. Organized talent is another. This discussion was had during the season when "Big Tom" was espousing the greatness of Acc offenses. He poo poo'd the argument that outside of ND, it's the lack of defense and goaltending in that league leading to such scores. We saw that play out in the tournament. Outside of ND, the lack of organization on the defensive end and bad goalie play lead to a lot of high scoring games.
I think this is a bit of an over-reaction to the finish. Keep in mind Maryland won those games behind 70% faceoff advantage. I didnt think the ACC had goaltending issues. Virginia did. Everyone else got solid play all year. The Duke kid picked the worst possible moment to look like a freshman, but that isnt shocking. Not bringing in the senior Goalie was shocking. That loss to Maryland was about faceoffs and just a complete lack of adjustments by the Duke staff. Defensively the ACC was solid. UVA has some great athletes and cover guys, but they were and have been undisciplined. That got highlighted, when the goalie situation fell apart. Even then they gave up 34 goals in 3 tournament games, that isnt a bad number. UVa lost that game due to faceoffs and having 0 offensive answers..
The 70% faceoff advantage was, obviously, an advantage.

Maryland's offensive efficiency in all 3 of their tournament wins was also very good, and a key part of why they won. Here's the adjusted efficiency numbers in all games

MD v Princeton: 33% MD-22% Princeton
MD v Duke: 34% MD-34% Duke
MD v UVA: 31% MD-18% UVA

The Duke game in particular *was* about MD's offense in addition to the other factors. Maryland scored 7 goals on 13 possessions in the 4Q against Duke. Obviously, having 7 more possessions in the quarter was a huge benefit. But they had to take advantage of it, and did. There were plenty of games this year where Maryland had a decisive FO adv and the offense didn't come along with it. They scored 42 goals in their first 3 NCAA games, that's either down to some good offense or less than stellar defense from the opponent
I dont think it surprising that the Maryland offense had a high efficiency in the 4q in a game where they dominated possession. Fatigue is not calculated in efficiency. That Duke game was about Defense and Weirman. Duke's offense struggled all day in 6 v 6. If the offense wasnt turning the ball over the entire 1st half, Duke doesnt probably scores 8 or less. Offense gave Duke multiple goals. Duke had 10 caused turnovers, at least 3-4 of those turned into fast break goals. Not all empty possessions are equal. Those numbers were boosted with Jamieson having 1 of his worst games. Efficiency is a useful metric, but it doesnt tell the whole story. If we are talking about Duke's biggest issue over the course of the season, it was maddening ability of one the most talented offenses in the country to completely disappear at times.
They dominated possession in lots of games this season and didn’t perform as well in the 4Q as they did against Duke. I was at the Hopkins game, they had tons of possessions in that 4Q and dominated face-offs…..they scored 5 goals.

Just equating MD’s success in the playoffs to faceoffs is very reductive; we literally saw the offensive changes the team made. They were significant

The offense was certainly better, but probably not as much as the magic run to #2 seems to indicate. Princeton absolutely was a significant difference.
The Duke game (one of the best Terp lacrosse games I can ever remember) had 2 Wierman goals and the empty netter, so that bring the offensive output to about the average for the seasson. The offense had 5 goals thru 3 quarters. But they wore them down and demoralized them. The defense completely shutting down all american #2 and containing hall of famer #34 when it counted was what won the game in my opinion, after Luke saved the season in the first half.

UVA game also had a Wierman and a pole goal. So there was some beautiful inside passing against a clueless defense, that was also an average output for the season in total. That was the whole team imposing Be the Best on an opponent that may have been overconfident (see #26 yapping in the best defender in the country's face after their first goal, which was pretty lucky to begin with).

The Notre Dame game counts too, and that was a monstrosity but it didn't really hurt because they made it there.

So they were definitely better but that bar was really low. Many fewer stupid turnovers, or so it seemed. Whittier was great creating space and finding guys; he made it look like the 2022 offense. Siracusa was very good as he was all season. On the other side, Malever, Spanos and Erksa were each shut out in 2 of the last 3 games.

Ford had 5 goals, including the game-winner in OT off a fast break, catch-and-shoot from the point. I believe all 5 of his goals were off-ball kinds of goals, some of which were really slick finishes. He didn't do much dodging if at all.

Here's his OT winner. https://x.com/NationalASG/status/1804318363444797751

From what I watched of BL this year he just isn't a dodger. He's a real slick inside finisher with some added range. Helps being as tall as he is, too.

Agree with you. He's gonna put on 30 pounds over the next couple of years, and when Higgins arrives, they're going to score a lot of points together.

Thomas Gravino having a great summer in the @UpstateBoxLax. Gravino, a 2022 and 2023 USA Lacrosse All American before joining the Terps, leads the UCBLL in points (20) and goals (14). He is also tied for the UCBLL lead with 6 assists

Ford looks to be about as skilled as any attackmen Tillman's ever gotten here. His scoring creativity is pretty well-known; but man he's got a great feel for where teammates are, or should be, and how to get to ball to them in the right place. He's an instant upgrade to the offense and everyone will benefit from his presence.

IL latest podcast reviews some transfers. They like the Maryland incoming transfers. They also said thy were not surprised by Malever hitting the portal.

Another side note was that Matt Kinar talked to the Maryland staff about the tournament run was that Big Ten’s are harder to play and when they didn’t have to play them they had success

ILs Comments from the U20 tryouts
Maryland rising freshman Spencer Ford’s size stands out even among a group that features 30 guys in grad years a year or two older than his, and he also showed a commanding presence at X.

Peter Laake’s improvement continues unabated. I’ve been fixated on “No. 2 defensemen” when evaluating ’26s this summer because I think it’s comparatively easier to identify who has the athletic attributes to match feet vs. the most athletic players, but it’s harder to ID who can eat space off-ball, support his teammates, knock down passes, pick up groundballs in traffic and be a reliable asset in the clearing game. Laake does all of that.

Hmmm..... Gloating.......Was the decisive Semifinal win over the Hoos not satisfying enough for you? These teams have a long history of rivalry and no way I am going to poke the bear......Regardless, the rivalry plays on in a very humorous you tube video of Xander Dickson responding to coach Bernhardts constant chirping, down 12 in the Atlas Denver PLL game. I am too old and technically unsavvy to share, but it's out there and priceless to watch and listen............

Yup saw that “short” with Dickson, thought it was funny too. Not gloating on the Semi (I am on the Terps thread right? lol), more surprised how throughly out coached UVA was. Yes you are correct UVA will every year get great players and compete for a championship regularly, but as witnessed here they need supreme talent to beat Tillman.

Well it is Fanlax so everyone is on everyone's threads. A little different than a TERP or Wahoo site message board and I have great respect for what Tillman has done. While I think you make some valid comments about being out coached in the semis, are you forgetting that the teams split games last season? It was the same players in each game minus whatever injuries on both squads so not sure how you square with that last comment? Virginia fell way off at the end of the season for a variety of reasons and not a particularly great job by the staff either. Still they made it to the Final 4. These 2 teams seem to do that every year, regardless, so great rivalry.

Agreed. I have mad respect for the UVA program under Tiffany. He does tend to embrace a more unstructured approach than Tillman does, but when you have access to the kind of talent UVA can put out, I understand. Let your players do their thing...

The rivalry with UVA is certainly real and close all time. I believe the Terps only have a losing all time record to JHU. Virginia has certainly been signing the top IL recruits. Not sure why so many go to sit. I was reading how judicious Lars has been in the Portal. I guess so. In the couple years prior to Tiffany arrival, I don’t think they won an ACC game for two years. Lars has done a great job getting them back on track. Meanwhile, the QTR final game in ‘20 on the goal that wasn’t still makes me ill. My two cents
