I don't understand. Are you upset that I didn't use the succeeding sentence, and took it out of context? Apologies if that's the problem.
wgdsr wrote: Sat Nov 07, 2020 4:39 pm the point is and always will be that r's don't believe government is the saviour of all problems. you can throw in that some faction thinks they'll end up paying for everyone else if you want to, but that overriding sense remains.
I'm simply saying that it's fairly obvious that the first sentence is incorrect.

Heck, take my oft used metaphor of University of Alabama football fans, tailgating before the game...complaining about how socialism is bad.

That's some pretty serious denial, don't you think? They're clearly unaware that they're about to watch a fully socialized Government-owned football team play ball...and that their entire fall revolves around a government activity.

Just pointing out the irony. And what I consider to be an obvious truth: Republicans sure do consider government to be the savior of problems every fall Saturday afternoon. Roll Tide. ;)

It's like the election. Notre Dame is this old anachronistic annoying dude that won't go away and Clemson (at least if you live in the south) is newer to the scene in that they hadn't been relevant since the early 80s and show up this decade thumping their chest with their fans some of the most obnoxious out there.

I'm rooting for Notre Dame but I don't love myself doing it.

So we've got that going for us...

A commentator on CNN said the last time he saw people dancing in the streets like that after an election was when Pinochet lost. He said Trump isn’t Pinochet but the reaction was the same....

That is an American President. He can go home and take his deplorables with him.

UGA has fewer national championships than another Georgia Power 5 football program. Their last national championship came nearly a decade earlier too.

That team is also 1-0-1 against Virginia in lacrosse I believe.

I've said from the beginning that Germany would be my benchmark for the US.

Latest data I can find on covid deaths per million people:

Germany: 11240/83.02 = 135

United States: 237000/328.2 = 722

I'd prefer to use excess death estimates rather than official covid deaths, but those numbers are harder to find. Won't change the fact that the US is doing worse by a factor of ~5.
Germany is the outlier & you know it. German ICU's are taking Belgian patients. Germany's also spiking & selectively locking down.
A relevant comparison would be the entire EU + UK.
Is NY or CA your benchmark for the US ?

The United States and the European Union have comparable population sizes, but until recently the trajectories of their COVID-19 outbreaks in recent months have been vastly different. As new daily coronavirus cases continue to rise across most US states — prompting worries of a "third wave" in hospitalization rates — many European countries are fighting a full-blown "second wave" of the pandemic that has brought Europe's mortality closer to that of the US, and led more European governments to reinforce strict measures to contain COVID-19. The current situation is a sharp contrast to the disparity seen over the summer, when US cases were spiking across much of the Midwest and South while European countries seemed to have kept the coronavirus (mostly) in check due to stricter adherence to social distancing and mask-wearing.
Are the EU national leaders as culpable as Trump for the deaths in their respective nations, or are they Trump's fault too ?

Germany is the gold standard. I named it as such in March. The US should be doing at least as well, not 5 times worse.

Not all of those US deaths can be blamed on Trump's failures and mismanagement, but a substantial fraction can be. Just how large a fraction TBD by historians.

I don't know other countries well enough to even begin to apportion responsibility.

The EU National leaders? Makes no sense. That would be like calling governors the US National leaders.

It’s not a mathematical exercise, that would be stupid since the EU is not monolithic, they had distinct cultures for many moons before they created that monstrosity. It’s dumb to act like it’s one country, it’s designed as a harmonization if economies to keep Germany in check conceived initially after world war 2 and really pushed forward with the Maastricht treaty in the early 90s. I studied in Copenhagen when there was a referendum to join the EMU (set of economic rules and common currency within the EU) and under a guy who was an advisor to the Danish government. We discussed the EU as nauseum over wine and/or Carlsberg (normally I drank Tuborg as I was broke but when he paying I drank the good stuff).

For someone who supposedly understands international politics so well it’s either totally dishonest or shows a complete lack of understanding to use the EU as one entity that would be comparable to the US.

I was at the Clemson-Ga Tech game, that was nasty. Going to one more, getting a box for Pitt next weekend. Theyve got a ways to go to be relevant but changing a program from triple option to a normal offense takes a few years.

Yeah GT has another year or two of recruiting to get back to a "normal" program. A great school with a lot of football and basketball history. We went to a lot of games when we lived in Atlanta - I liked the Club Lounge level, it's usually full of fans, and you get a few free cups of beer. Was really hoping they could have pulled out the 2004 bball championship too.

That's one thing I don't like living in the Virginia Beach / Hampton Roads area. No big time sports within an easy drive.
