That's just dumb. She died because she was placed in an assignment for which she was not qualified because the Navy was desperate to have a woman fighter pilot. She was already flying jets -- EA-6A's in a shore based squadron. It would have been a much easier transition for her to be assigned to one of the Navy's 12 carrier based EA-6B squadrons, but the Navy had to have a woman "fighter pilot", even though the EA-6 is an electronic warfare variant (jammer) of the A-6 Intruder attack aircraft, which leads airstrikes & suppresses enemy air defense systems. It's still a combat jet, but it is much less difficult to land aboard a carrier than a F-14. She was already qualified & current in an earlier model of the EA-6. It would have been a natural transition & she was already familiar with the Electronic Warfare mission.
