Because RPI does not care about who you beat, only who you played, and what your overall record was against thost teams (which only counts for 25% of RPI).
Ugh. I forgot what a convoluted soup of statistics and ratings go into the selection process. I was thinking about quality win factor in terms of top-10 wins - you all are of course correct that top-20 wins are part of the criteria (to whatever small degree).

Like if it was a close deal in or out of the tournament should the program make a big deal about it and draw a ton of attention to it before the selection committee meets?

Just asking opinions on selection strategy, not trying to make the ND mistaken victory a thing.
it depends and yes.

Maryland would have 1000% been in the tournament at 4-1 in the B1G without a UVA win. Not even a question. The ACC is going to get 3 bids because there's a good chance UVA-ND-Duke wind up 1-2-3 in RPI but after that the Big Ten was the 2nd best league OOC and that's what gets your league ranked high in RPI and therefore Maryland going 4-1 in the B1G would have given them a handful of good RPI wins plus a good RPI rating itself. Plus chance for more in the B1G Tournament. And of course there's every chance they just win the AQ. 3-2 would be a different story, it'd put them in the mix with a group of teams and their lack of an OOC win could potentially be a factor, but even still, the B1G is almost assuredly getting 4 teams in and 3-2 is almost assuredly getting you Top 4 in the B1G. So that's very, very likely getting you into the tournament.

2-3 and they'd have needed to win the AQ.

there is no 100%. and everyone's case is individual, not via conference, tho that can be a big factor. #s and opinions on other things make for a melange.

There is a very real chance Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, and possibly JHU plummet as the season progresses….. OSU looked terrible today at Denver….

Only MD and RU make the tournament, and I’m assuming one of these 2 get the AQ…..

Based on OOC wins, Maryland and Penn State have the best shot at making it in. Rutgers’ best win is against Loyola. Hopkins’ best win is against Georgetown. Michigan’s best win is probably Harvard. OSU’s best win is probably UNC.

This was argued ad nauseum in the run-up to the selection show last year. QWF is a thing, and it’s the reason Duke didn’t make it even though they were ranked 8th in the RPI IIRC.

Going to start another thread… and give this thread back to Terps talk.

nd was #6 qwf and # 3 sos. and had 2 top 10 wins vs others not having any. you're chasing your tail to try to figure it out (duke was #7 rpi). it's about the committee.

Not really trying to figure it out, just trying to remember the methodology. I started the other thread. I do not recall ND having #6 QWF... is that ranking still available?

Rewatching the game… Erksa just took over the game in the early second half. I think he’s a future #1. Maybe even next year.

RE: "McDonald covered Schutz when he had the pole."

#20 (the #1 LSM) primarily had responsibility for marking Schutz. #51 is the #2 LSM. #20 is banged up and playing high level despite his physical limitations. Both will need to enter the SSDM rotation if Trader is injured.

Maryland put Geppert on Schutz late in the 4Q after he dusted McDonald on a dodge. Before that McDonald was on him. Geppert seemed to be roving more off ball, perhaps due to his injury.

It’s interesting that Tillman chose to “pick his poison” and match a shortie on McConvey for the entire game. Dickson had shorties on him at times as well. Kolar did well on a couple of occasions where he got isolated against Dickson and McConvey IIRC.

I’m really liking the SSDM rotation. They were able to handle the UVa attack even with Trader out in the second half. Redd was excellent, and made a heady play after the Ruppel triple-save to get out of traffic and clear. Hopfully Trader is back and healthy shortly.

The areas we all knew were going to be relative weaknesses compared to last year were the offense and SSDM. Goalie became one with the McNaney injury.

But...trust in Tillman. Offense looks like it's growing quicker than expected, and some unexpected faces are really showing up (Koras and Erksa, especially). SSDMs are better than expected - they played really well against Virginia, which is no easy task...and that's with Trader playing only first half. And even the third pole, Burlace, is really coming along well. Ruppel has more than held his own at goalie.

It's a young team, growing up in front of us. Really nice to see.

Yeah, pretty awesome. Not that he really needed to last year, but Koras has gone from barely dodging at all to becoming one of the Terps’ top dodging threats, along with Erksa and Long. And while the passing game is getting there, this team actually seems more dynamic from a dodging standpoint than last year’s. It seems like Tillman’s thought process was to prioritize getting dodgers on the field while the team masters the complexities of the motion offense.

And you can see the progress on that front as well. There were probably about five opportunities where the Terps got in front of the net and just missed; heck when it was 3-0, there were a couple of opportunities at the goal mouth. The Terps are increasingly able to use motion to confuse the opposing D, and get open looks, much like last year. On the last possession of the game, nearly every defender is facing Erksa at the X when he passes to Kelly. And Kelly slowly flows through the D from the opposite alley, into the middle of the field, and then into his final shooting position.

Erksa was one hell of a find. He is so dynamic, has vision, is twitchy fast, can score, good passer… once he cleans up the freshman mistakes, he’s going to be dominant.

Erksa will need to get physically stronger. However, the young guns are making Terp Nation proud! #13 playing more is good as well.
