Seacoaster(1) wrote: Fri Dec 16, 2022 7:53 am Sorry, I watched but hadn't listened to the broadcast. Of course, in the end it didn't matter. It provided UNC -- and NU -- with a lot of time to talk, regroup, hydrate. And it was in the 3rd Quarter -- lots of time left in terms of the anticipated number of possessions left to divvy up in the game. I'm not sure that the so-called calculated risk of seeking the stick check was such a bad idea. I doubt I would have done it, but then I don't have a couple of championships under my belt. And strange -- for me anyway -- that it was an NU defender's stick. In the end, the biggest coaching mistakes were not made by Levy and Barnes. One of the biggest prime time collapses I have even watched in sports. Truly stealing defeat from the jaws of victory.
I hear you. In principle however--it just didn't make sense at the time. IF (and I know full well this is merely an irrelevant, after-the-fact if) but IF Carolina ended up losing the game by one let's say, just for the sake of discussion, it would have been Levy who was haunted with this decision. One can imagine the questions at the post game--"Coach, what was your rationale for calling a stick check at that time in the game?" "Coach, was it a momentum killer to have called that stick check after just scoring a goal to give a possession back to Northwestern which they cashed for a goal?"

I'm guessing it may have been the stick Berkery swapped with Dwyer after the draw, but I don't know that for sure.

So very true.

Yep, don't disagree with anything you say. I was looking at the 4th Quarter of this thing some weeks ago, and I still cannot believe that KAH did not (1) call the last timeout when UNC made it 14-12 on Geiersbach's (sic?) second goal, or (2) made an adjustment to prevent Geiersbach from isolating on her tired defenders.
Of course, in the end it didn't matter.

Agreed--in the end it didn't matter. But I don't consider it wise in that situation if you're not certain sure that the stick you challenge will be illegal.

(Good to know I'm not the only one who goes back and watches replays.)

Yes, I remember you mentioning those things in another post a while back. I'm working my way through the broadcast a block at a time. Like I said the other day drawing the Honeymooners analogy, I'll stop watching midway through the 4th quarter. I can't bear to watch those poor players go through that again. One of the most stunning miscalculations by a coach since Pete Carroll decided to try a pass 2nd and goal on the 1 yard line with Marshawn "Beastmode" Lynch in the backfield.

The magnitude of Northwestern's collapse still stuns me. How many things they absolved for the Heels during the course of this game by their own blight of mindlessness in the 4th quarter. (Another example to follow...)

When I first read this I thought it was nonsense because your description of "frontier justice" is not what I saw. I saw a defender trying to make a check on the stick that just missed the mark, nothing more and certainly not frontier justice or seeking of revenge on an assailant. There was no assailant involved in the play you're referring to either, there were two players who met at the same time and place on the field and albeit a rough collision it was incidental contact and there was no ill intent on either player's part....hence, no penalties called. Your description of Wurzburger's play is sports writer fantasy, hyperbole to the max, and completely inaccurate. Go back and listen to what SBB has to say about these two plays.

Sheehan sees it her way; the refs see it theirs; you see it yours; I see it mine. So what else is new?

There's a big difference in people seeing things differently and just making stuff up for effect.
There is no truth in your description of these plays, it's a fabrication of assaults and frontier justice,
kinda like the difference between fact and fiction not the difference in the way people see things.

Again--your comments fall under the same category--opinion. You're saying it a different way but you're essentially saying the same thing--to which I would respond with: see above.

That is what I saw as well. She tries for a home run check right before running out of room before the RL. I would think that if it was retribution it would be a downward strike not a butt end lift.

WOW! Totally agree. Two challenging team in their OCC. it starts with multi year under achievers. PSU, bottom B10 performer. The two heavy weights! Who will Jax be? The Sunshine Beast that totally embarrassed the over hyped Cardinal last year? New coach and direction? The Gators. The only tough weekend of the whole schedule. As for the PAC10, any thoughts if they can resuscitate the conference? I saw USC get throttled in 3 Fall ball games. They could not get any stops. Can Colorado get back the old mojo? New OC from Northwestern, can she inject some life into their attack? Can they land the PAC zeppelin in a lightening storm? For ASU a mostly luke warm schedule at best.

Not overwhelmed by this schedule....UNC/MD/LOY/JMU are good matchups, but the others (with the possible exception of PENN) are meh.

Probably looking at 12-4 and a ranking...but they will lose to those above....

Maybe seven — conservatively — sure Ws on that schedule.
