Let the age of reason commence!
Correct. UNC has better wins and slightly worse losses.
Again ACC as 0 wins against top10 in OOC games
They beat themselves league overrated.

Those 3 teams are all very closely bunched in RPI (0.001 max difference) which is why it was possible to drop past all 3.

A win over Cuse should be a small positive, Lafayette an RPI drop similar to Q, down 0.010, UVa currently ~0.035 above #11, so should remain in top 10.

I thought that it was gracious of UVA to schedule Quinnipiac. It's unfortunate that it creates a disadvantage for them.

Agreed. UVa used to play VMI regularly, that had an even worse effect on their RPI.

In hockey, RPI is adjusted to remove the effect of "bad wins".

Back in that infamous 2019 campaign, Cornell's RPI took a significant hit from scheduling a game with 1st year St. Bonaventure. Of course, even then they still had a higher RPI than JH...not that it mattered. But I remember at the time people on these forums pointing to Cornell's "weak" SOS, predicated in no small part on this one game.

I agree that there should be some method for weighing one or two "weak" RPI wins. Then again, I think RPI is kind of idiotic anyway, so not sure it's worth tweaking a poor metric.

I'm not sure of all this. but there was a time that the RPI calculation accounted for scheduling weak teams, and the negative effect that just playing them had on better teams.

I believe that the SOS metric for a team was only used for its top 10 opponents. (exactly how they defined that I don't know)

It seems like they dropped that point. The problem is that the lower ranked teams benefit (usually) by playing better team, and they did not want to discourage top teams from playing them.

Someone here must know more about RPI than I do; so help us out please.

rpi is simply 25% your record, 50% opponents' % record, and 25% opp' opp' % record. subtract your own game with opponents when tabulating opp' record.

it is in theory trying to do its job by measuring how you did against teams that were good, bad or indifferent... as meaured by their record against of course their opponents.

the nc$$ booklet has a list of criteria that are to be evaluated, without definition to weighting. however, by all indications the committee has simply taken the top rpi teams as at larges for at least 2017-2019, with 2021 being a covid outlier. and your own straight rpi isn't even in the criteria.

the sos metric you mention is "supposed" to be considered as your top 10 rpi opponents. sos is the back 2/3 of rpi (opp' record and opp' opp' record), but i don't know in what weighting.

in reference to cornell and 2019 and rpi vs others, the cutoff was 11. cornell was 12. hopkins was 8. cornell was left out.

cornell's sos was 4th i believe, fwiw.

It seems like Army got overly dropped in my opinion. They were 5th last week. Many people have them ranked 15-18.

HGK2, masondixonlax - no ranking for Army

I'm OK with ranking them below 16, but not ranking them seems like a mistake. In fairness, I did not watch the game.

How do we handle ranking when a ranker leaves a team off the list, but does not rank 20 teams?

You are 100% correct and that is my bad. I thought I did rank them. I would have put them around 13-14

Virginia has no top 10 (or even top 12) RPI wins and 3 losses (including to a team in the bottom of the top 20). I guess everyone is counting on another overachieving playoff run. Hard to bet against that given past performance, but that's a big if. RPI has them at 7 which seems a bit high based on their results, but teams are pretty closely stacked around those numbers.

Three convincing top 10 wins in a row will do that. (although they did not jump Virginia)
