What more do I have to do to cover her?!

Gets funnier each time I watch it.
That's very good defense out there on that island. I don't blame her for being torqued.
That was possibly dangerous propelling. She shoots right over the VIrginia player's head. She doesnt hit her or it would be dangerous follow through/dangerous contact, but I would think the propelling foul could be called.

I agree that was very good defense.

She’s not the only one in this day and age, but a lot of Charlotte North’s shots could draw a dangerous propelling foul. She has good stick control, though, which has prevented her from committing dangerous follow through fouls.

Agreed. I wouldn't have been at all surprised to see that called but great strength to control the follow-through.

If anyone can tell me how the defense could have been played any better, or anything done differently, I'd like to hear it. This was outstanding defense and I agree Dr., very close to dangerous propel (likely why the D girl throws her arms up in the air), have seen it called on Treanor for a far less dangerous looking shot. This is also a perfect example of why there are those who call CN a little on the hoggish side. This play should have ended with a slam dunk from the doorstep goal with an assist coming from North. Belle cuts through while CN is looking for no one but is covered. Don't know who the next cutter is, but her defender completely loses track of her while thinking of going over to double North leaving her wide open but North never gives her as much as a look. The objective of a possession is to end it with a goal and that's what happens here, but that doesn't make this a good play in my book, it's a display of very selfish play that ends with a Hail Maryish shot that goes in.

I'm planning to upload this entire play from when North receives the pass through the goal continuing through the announcer's comments after. Hoping to have that all done a bit after I get home from work later this afternoon.

Second cutter was very open and CN could have seen her on the next to last roll

Nice DMac. The only way the 1v1 D could've improved maybe is if she was able to physically move CN away from the cage--that would take it 9/10 to 10/10. I'm a all high-fives on the sideline when 3 comes off the field--held CN to low % shot. Perhaps her frustration is also because they need a save in that situation. Agreed 12 is open for a better look. Also agreed that I would like to see the double once CN is forced down the alley and turned her back. As you say, looked like she saw it just didn't go (no way of knowing how she's coached). To me that is where the play breaks down--not the 1v1. As a group, hate to let her get back topside. It happened so fast, though and good BC movement off-ball kept them guessing.

My bold....very wide open indeed, her defender had no idea where she was.
The ballhandler had her mind made up she was going to shoot, didn't matter
who was open.

There's no maybe about it. Defender looks to North, leans in that direction with thoughts of going to double team her and that second cutter heads to the goal and is wide open. An Ortega would've made that pass, a North not so much.

Picked-up pieces from ONWgate

Post by OuttaNowhereWregget »

Mulling a few things from the recent disturbance on my penultimate day at work...

I thought Doc made a fitting allusion to the dustup by referring to it as a soap opera. Generally, Soap operas are compelling. This one was a-big-bucket-of-popcorn's worth--and it was nice to stand on the sidelines (after the point-counterpoint was relocated) and observe for a change.

So--not in any particular order:

==================

File under Good To Know--

I greatly appreciated Matnum's fair and open-minded demeanor as he guided the S.S. Back-Up Stick through the squall. I particularly enjoyed him spelling out in plain language just exactly what his role is and what Admin's role is:

"I run the Fantasy League and post and whatever. I'm little different than you, Bart. Yes, this is, so to speak, my house, I pay the rent, I mow the lawn, etc. and... I very much want everyone to feel at home here. That's me, that's Matnum. Separately, Admin is someone who volunteers their time to FanLax and strictly works as Admin for the website, for the forum. Totally separate. Metaphorically, I'm a player. A player who organizes the league and whatever. But after the opening whistle (which was blown years ago), I'm just a player. Admin is the ref."

==================

Some Top Shelf metaphors emerged from all the heat, which to be accurate started way back in the original thread that got moved piecemeal when a certain draw specialist was appraised shall we say?

Best by far was Sunnylax's Cleveland State, from now on (at this address anyway) a stellar trope for cupcakes, especially in reference to teams picked by typically ranked programs looking to pad their stats for almost guaranteed entrance to The Dance. Not lost in the scuffle was Sunny's biting feistiness when another member missed her irony. Also top shelf.

Next was Matnum's Jimmy--a nifty name symbol for everymember akin to everyman.

Last but not least was Joizy Bill's ONWgate, from which I took the liberty of extracting the hyphen as none of the other actual gate's are hyphenated.

==================

"I guess the lock on his thread would be a punishment for posting elsewhere?"

I thought this succinct summation was a mic drop from Matnum in response to the incessant calls for locking the ONW thread.

==================

Personally, I found these remarks judicious and instructive, yet heartening and affirming:

"Based on what you're saying, I'm impressed by ONW."

"I get it, ONW's annoying. But there's something admirable about his passion for the game."

"I agree wholeheartedly. Jimmy is annoying and he's doing it on purpose, that's trolling. Jimmy is annoying and he genuinely can't help it, I have empathy for that guy. Obviously that's the black and white and, like in most of life, there are grays. But I think your word, intent, is critical to how I'm experiencing this. I'm not convinced that Jimmy is intentionally annoying."

"Jimmy annoys people at school. Just not a popular kid. So he homeschools for a year. Then comes back. Is his coming back intent to annoy? I dunno. Maybe but doesn't strike me as provable without more information."

==================

It's readily apparent that there are some very intelligent, well-read and eloquent folks who frequent this WD1 board, but that they are susceptible to pettiness and mean-spiritedness just as much as any blue color high school grad from the streets can be. Some of you are highly educated, but sometimes you use your words to condescend and insult--however subtly. An insult is an insult and gets felt the way insults generally feel when on the receiving end--however decorously one tries to put it over. That happy crappy needs to stop.

==================

And the last piece--

At one point Matnum (see above) wrote regarding the forum, "I very much want everyone to feel at home here."

I'll just offer my perspective as someone who was made to feel right from the beginning that I was an outsider and had opinions that weren't appreciated. Some Jimmy's were polite and condescending about it and other Jimmy's were just downright rude and insulting. You may be thinking, "Well--you provoked it, Jimmy!" Maybe so in certain cases, definitely in others if I am speaking for myself. But there are other cases when new members, not named Jimmy, but Jane rather, come into the forum wide-eyed and looking up at all the tall buildings the way folks new to a city are wont to do, and then they make the mistake of giving their unvarnished opinion about something. That's when the welcome door, in the WD1 board anyway, gets slammed in Jane's face.

Perfect example was Jane early in the piecemeal thread that started the whole melee. She made a comment about a player and was immediately jumped on and insulted. That's where admin would have been utilized if the Jimmy who was offended by the content of the post flagged it and allowed admin to make the call. If he found it inappropriate he would have said something--a lot more tactfully than how it was said by Jimmy.

Another instance--and this is the last one--was when another Jane came new to the WD1 board, made a comment at the end of her second week of activity in her 20th post and was slammed by gentleman Jim with this:

"Sorry, this wins the ridiculous comment competition. The podium all to yourself."

Another Jimmy weighed in, ""You can't be serious? Hawryschuk was legit T frontrunner and Carney was probably 2nd best on team. Any other team wouldn't have even made tournament."

and finally, a third Jimmy made their voice heard, "On the last day of the season you win the worst post of the year award. Nice timing."

Not hospitable about disagreeing with a new member and making them feel at home in the least.

==================

And thus endeth the impressions and observations from your humble narrator on the Muckraker's Free-for-all.

(Oh man--the song/word association is still working well... Good way to go out)

Typical.

But the trolling thread is indeed the place to make these arguments.

I dunno. I don't see so many open players.
#12 is open, great cut. I don't think North sees her, most likely because she wasn't thinking feed, she was focused hard on getting her shot off.

I disagree with calling North "selfish" or "hoggish", I think she's simply much better at working to get her own shot than she is at setting up others. Her mindset needn't be characterized in a way that is demeaning...she's scoring for her team. An assist is worth just as much as a goal to the record books...but the goal scored is job #1. She's tremendous at doing Job #1.

Now, if one wants to argue that a player with a more balanced approach to scoring is more valuable to a team than one who excels at scoring on her own, that's a different matter.

I don't know any coach who doesn't work with a great scoring attack to have their eyes up when driving to the net, and for the other players to work really hard to be dangerous. Doing so also opens up the field for the driving attack, as it makes it much harder for defenders to 'help' if they're going to get lit up by a back side cut for a very high quality shot opportunity. Some are better at that aspect than others.

But as a coach I'd also encourage my alpha to play that alpha role, forcing opponents to have to defend. And I'd much prefer an error of commission, than omission...so, I'd encourage a full commitment to get one's own shot off. But keep eyes up as much as you can... ;)

Personally, I think it's a bit silly to get hung up on who is "best"...I'd want any of these top gals on my squad!
